I've name changed for this as this could out me.

Our neighbours across the road are what I would consider selfish neighbours - parties till the early hours both on week nights and week days, using the public car park to have bbq's therefore blocking anyone from parking in their space etc.

My DD starts school tomorrow for the first time, she's 4. Since 7pm they've had a generator running outside their house which is so fucking loud it's rumbling our house.

I've been over to see what's going on as our DD is being kept awake by it and apparently they have no power so have been given a generator - it's huge.

I asked if this noise will go on all night and I was told yes until the problem was fixed.

My DD is now crying upstairs because she's so tired. What the hell do I do?

elastamum can I ask why you were given a generator? As the general consensus is that you are only given a generator if you are priority?

onthehigh I didn't report it as such, I rang them to ask them what the law was on it

The power company will certainly give you a generator if they aren't going to find able to fix your power til the next day - we've had that. And these are serious generators, not things that you can be popping in and out to switch on and off as the neighbours complain. Your neighbours may be a pain, but this is not really their fault. The noise of a generator is pretty monotonous, so I wonder if the cause of not sleeping is partly due to first day nerves?

There is no-one who is a priority here, but we were still given a generator. The one we had was positioned by our house, it was huge and noisy because it served multiple houses, but we were just so grateful to have electricity. It really is just one of those things....

I need a fridge to keep some medical supplies in. My neighbours, even those I am very friendly with, do not know this.

Not a priority household. Had a generator from N-power for 4 days once when our house was the only one with a power issue. It was locked and we couldn't turn it on/off ourselves.

Not sure why people are claiming it is so suspicious! It wasn't in our case.

You can complain to the council's noise pollution department, yes they should be able to have a generator but if it's producing so much noise that it's disturbing the neighbors them it's an issue that the energy company should be addressing (and it's potentially faulty). I'd be contacting them and asking for them to advise, especially if it's above a certain decibels level.

Same here - we had to have one when our house was off due to cabling being damaged by builders doing work on some houses further down the road (we were the only house in the road that was affected). The electricity company brought it and set it up on or drive as they had no idea how long it was as going to take to fix as were going to have to dig a good chunk of road up. They started it up and locked it all. We couldn't turn it off if we had wanted to. It was very noisy, but were very grateful to have it and you just kind of tuned the noise and the vibration out after a while. We didn't have anyone vulnerable here either but had already been off for half a day by the time they brought it. Was just in time to save fridge/freezer food etc. We had no hot water or heating without it as have no gas. None of our neighbours complained and were if fact happy about it the next day when the electricity in the whole road got turned off, to fix the fault, as we were the only ones left with electricity at that point via the generator, we were then running cups of tea and hot water up the road to our elderly neighbours for the day.

So your neighbours may not actually be able to turn it off anyway, even if they wanted to.
