I've caved in and put heating on I'm bloody freezing! My DP will only moan (tight fisted Yorkshire man)
Anyone else got their heating on already? I would have put it on in late August!

pigsDOfly unless the thermostat is faulty, then your heating isn't coming on when its set to 18 as the temperature is clearly above 18!

PandorasXbox · 04/09/2017 10:33

We've had it on over the whole of the Summer intermittently.

Pigface1 · 04/09/2017 10:34

I wanted to put the heating on last night. Then I checked the thermostat and the temperature was 20 degrees so I had a word with myself and put a jumper on. Think it was just the constrast from the heat of the previous day.

Lovingmybear2 · 04/09/2017 10:36

Lit the wood burner last night and had a glass of sherry!

pigsDOfly · 04/09/2017 10:37

Yes, I realise that Ifailed that's my point.

How is it that even in the middle of winter my heating won't kick in at that temperature, or if it did, it wouldn't be warm enough to heat the house, and yet loads of people say that's how high they keep it all the time.

Their houses must be freezing.

NoParticularPattern · 04/09/2017 11:06

I think it depends a lot on your house and also individual rooms pigs. We have a tiny draught that goes through the living room, hallway and back porch (all old extensions of extensions that no doubt have shifted slightly and now have draughts, despite new windows and doors!!) which makes it cold if it's windy outside. But our kitchen has a lot lower ceiling than the rest of the house too so that always feels warmer. Plus if your thermostat is positioned in a naturally warm spot then it will need to be set higher still to make the rest of the rooms warmer. I once lived in a house where the thermostat was on the opposite side of the wall to the boiler. Was a handy place to put it, apart from the fact that the wall got so warm that the thermostat sat there happily telling everyone it was 22 degrees when you needed actual arctic expedition gear in the living room! Not the brightest of ideas that one!!

Mind you that said, our bedroom can be bloody cold even with the heating on, but then I suppose that's to be expected in an old farmhouse where our bedroom has three outside walls, a draughty bathroom and an attic conversion above. Only time it's warm in there is summer (as it has a huge south facing window) or when you've had the log burner stoked up all day which is directly underneath and the chimney goes up one of the bedroom walls. I don't mind since I quite like it cold, but DH whines about how cold it is unless its about 24 degrees out haha!!

pigsDOfly · 04/09/2017 11:17

Yes, position of the thermostat will make a difference and I suppose different people feel temperature differently, and of course, it depends what you're doing, when I'm sitting still I can get freezing. Even so, I couldn't have my house at 18 degrees it would be too cold for me.

Sallystyle · 04/09/2017 14:19

Their houses must be freezing.

Mine is far from it. I set mine to 18 and some people comment when they come in because it's like an oven. My house is new and it's just a very hot house so 18 in my house will feel too hot for most people.

pigsDOfly · 04/09/2017 14:36

My house is new too and the thermostat just doesn't kick in at 18 degrees.

Maybe I'm just a very cold blooded sort of person.

Sallystyle · 04/09/2017 14:38

I am really cold blooded. I hate being cold with a passion and it makes me feel ill. I am the one wearing layers when other people think it is hot.

mommybunny · 04/09/2017 14:59

I'm sitting at my desk at home in Surrey with blue fingers as I type this. It doesn't matter how many layers I put on, if I'm sitting at my desk and the outside temperature is below 19 degrees I will feel cold and miserable. If DH himself is not cold then it is not cold. There is no way the heating will go on before November - we could have a blizzard before then but still no dice.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 04/09/2017 15:05

Mine is on a thermostat and timer. It will come on if the temperature in the house falls below 18 degrees.

My thermostat says it is 21.4 degrees in here at the moment but we are in the relatively mild south east.

pigsDOfly · 04/09/2017 15:06

Do you have no say in it Bunny?

One of the perks of living alone is whatever I want to do, I do and I'm damned if I'm going to be cold.

Dog doesn't like the heating on - she has a double coat and is happiest when it's a bit fresh - and will go and sit in the garden if she gets too hot; maybe you should suggest such and arrangement to your DH Bunny.

ziggy1986 · 04/09/2017 16:53

Yes - I live in Scotland and do not use heating between May and September (inclusive)

AlexaAmbidextra · 04/09/2017 17:35

I couldn't care less what date it is. I like to be toasty without wearing layers of clothes so if I'm cold then the heating goes on.

Dowser · 04/09/2017 17:52

Mines never been off...it has of course but I mean it doesn't matter how cold it is the heating goes on and I dare anyone to argue otherwise.

Ifailed · 04/09/2017 19:07

pigsDOfly

How can Their houses must be freezing, when the temperature is above 18 centigrade?

pigsDOfly · 04/09/2017 19:22

Just for me 18 centigrade is cold.

If you set the thermostat for 18 that's what the temperature it will go to. It won't go above that. My heating doesn't kick in if my thermostat is set at 18, so my radiators would never get warm at that temperature.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 04/09/2017 19:34

I'm in Scotland and won't put the heating on until October unless I absolutely have to. My house is quite warm and I still have my windows open at the moment. If it gets cold between now and October it will be jumpers, blankets and hot water bottles.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 04/09/2017 19:36

I've just checked. It's 16°C so positively balmy at the moment.

PurpleNurple69 · 04/09/2017 19:43

NE Scotland here - got home from work at 4.30pm and it was colder indoors than out! Stone cottage. Heating got slapped on the minute I walked in the door much to DH's disgust Smile

ItsNachoCheese · 04/09/2017 19:46

I lasted til friday before putting the heating on. Its been off since march. The tree over the fence is teeming with rowan berries... its going to be a brutal winter

Whatthefoxgoingon · 04/09/2017 19:46

We only stopped running the air conditioning about a week ago in London. Thankfully the whole family runs hot.

18 is too hot for me, heating will kick in at less than 15 (we have excellent insulation) Think we'll be in mid October by then.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 04/09/2017 19:47

I'd love a cold snowy winter but we never get those in London anymore....

abigailgabble · 04/09/2017 19:58

ahh having a 4mo in the house = heating on, no guilt. bliss Grin
