I've caved in and put heating on I'm bloody freezing! My DP will only moan (tight fisted Yorkshire man)
Anyone else got their heating on already? I would have put it on in late August!

Mine went on for an hour yesterday morning to take the chill off.

Ive just put the second layer of the quilt back onto the bed. I was cold last night in just the low tog summer layer.

Ive also started washing the throws so that we can snuggle up under them in the evenings.

MsVestibule · 04/09/2017 09:26

If you're wearing a long sleeved top and a jumper and you're still cold, only then will I give you permission to put the heating on.

We keep a junior bed sized duvet in our lounge, lovely to snuggle under when watching TV, and saves on the heating bills!

QueSera · 04/09/2017 09:27

I had the heating on periodically in July and August. Freezing in SE England

Sallystyle · 04/09/2017 09:27

Mine is on a thermostat as well. If it goes below 18c it will come on.

I am very cold blooded but thankfully I have a warm house. I don't care what time of year it is, I will never be cold in my own home. As a child/teen we didn't have central heating and we couldn't afford to put the fire on as much as was needed and if you went into another room you would freeze again. Winter was miserable. I vowed to never be cold again in my own house.

geekone · 04/09/2017 09:28

Move to Scotland we have had our heating on and off the whole summer (maybe not May). It's automatic after a certain temperature

Ifailed · 04/09/2017 09:29

If you can afford to have the heating on, and feel cold, then do so. Remember it's not an option for many though, for me it'll be jumpers and coats for the next couple of months if it gets chilly.

specialsubject · 04/09/2017 09:35

Temperature varies round the country. It is hot in London. It is cold with crap weather in Yorkshire and Scotland.

And in other news, something about bears and woods....

It's been a great summer in the midlands but after all day rain yesterday, the switch got flipped!

PollyFlint · 04/09/2017 09:36

The purpose of central heating is keep you comfortably warm, not to tell you what month it is.

If you really are uncomfortably cold and a jumper's not cutting it, put the bloody heating on if you can afford it, whether it's January or whether it's July.

user1490607838 · 04/09/2017 09:36

YANBU. We had it on for half hour. (Yesterday.) I think we had it on for an hour or so one evening in early August too. It went down to 9 degrees C. I am all for saving money, but I won't sit in a cold house.

It's not a matter of just 'snuggling down with a blanket,' (as someone said earlier in the thread,) the whole house gets cold; the bedrooms, the kitchen, the dining room, the hall, stairs, and landing. I am not going to reside in my house freezing when I have a perfectly good central heating system. Confused

It's not the dark ages!!

stumblymonkeyagain · 04/09/2017 09:37

@QueSera Whereabouts in SE?

I'm in Surrey...last two days have been dreary but still pretty warm. It's overcast and drizzling but still going to be 21 here today. I'm sitting in the lounge with a summer dress on.

Friday was amazing weather (I was on a yacht on the Solent and got burnt!).

Looks like it's turning towards Autumn weather from Weds though as dipping to single figures overnight.

I'm a way off central heating yet!

ThaiRedCurry · 04/09/2017 09:42

It's sad that fuel is so expensive that we have to think twice about keeping warm Confused

I've just got back from holiday this morning and put the thermostat straight up. It feels really cold but also the house feels generally chilly and unlived in.

user1490607838 · 04/09/2017 09:52

Some people seem to say gas and electric is expensive, but we have never had a massive bill to be honest. Then again, we never have the thermostat above 18-degrees ish, 20 maybe for a few weeks in January, and we have always had a boiler that is never more than 10 years old. Maybe that is why.

Our gas (heating and cooker,) is £30 a month ... well £15 a month in summer and £45 in winter, so it balances out at £30 a month over the year IYSWIM. (We have a 3 bed property that is from the 1960's.)

A neighbour of mine said she has a gas bill of £90 a month, and they have exactly the same house, and a gas cooker too. I really cannot figure out why. She either has a massively old boiler, or has the heating on all the time on 25 degrees C.

It is good that people think before burning fuel. If you give a toss about your kids, you should burn as little as possible.

Thingywhatsit · 04/09/2017 09:58

I wish my house was cool enough to want to put the heating on - we still have fans going every day.

Well insulated new build that gets lots of sun. Unbearably hot to be in. Not had heating on since early April. Windows open and fans on since 9am and its drizzling outside......

mydogisthebest · 04/09/2017 10:00

I put the heating on if me or DH feels cold no matter what month it is. It went on yesterday for about an hour. The day before I was sitting sunbathing in the garden!

If I am cold I will always put on a thicker top, socks etc but I am not going to feel cold in my own home

user1490607838 · 04/09/2017 10:01

Ooooooooookayyyyy........... Let's just let the whole family freeze to death in the house to show we care about our kids then......... Confused

minionsrule · 04/09/2017 10:02

Same here, we gotback from Spain on saturday and house was bloody freezing. Held off till ladt night then flicked heating on for a couple of hours and again this morning. It also helps for drying all those holiday clothes!

Rinkydinkypink · 04/09/2017 10:04

We've had our fire on most nights. Today I'm cold. Really cold. I suspect it might be on for an hour of things don't change.

Rinkydinkypink · 04/09/2017 10:04

It's 13oc

apostropheuse · 04/09/2017 10:07

If it feels cold my heating goes on. I hate feeling cold and miserable and it exacerbates the pain from my arthritis.

Heathcliff27 · 04/09/2017 10:16

My heatings on as well, North East of Scotland here and my DD is away to school today with her big winter coat on, bloody freezing and because I'm right on the coast its windy as fuck!

PollyFlint · 04/09/2017 10:22

Well, you've really factored in all the subtle nuances of this complex argument in coming to this judgement, haven't you? Well done there. Hmm

pigsDOfly · 04/09/2017 10:23

I've been arguing with myself for weeks on and off whether to put it on. It's not the cost, thankfully that's not a problem, it's just I feel I should be able to keep warm without it.

But I had to put it on last night: two thick jumpers and one thin, were just not cutting it; also I've got a horrible cold and feeling sorry for myself.

That's it now, it'll be on every evening I suspect until the spring.

The thermostat is set to 18 the rest of the time and it never comes on at that temperature.

Every winter this topic comes up on here and people say they keep their thermostat on 18 all winter. Don't understand it, mine just doesn't do anything at that temperature and it's been the same in all the houses I've lived in.

ThaiRedCurry · 04/09/2017 10:26

Does anyone else's DP moan if you are cold and they are not?
