Delivery was due today but it's been returned to the shop and put back. Money will be back in DH's account in 3-5 days.

How can they get away with that? On a fucking Sunday too. Will have to find and borrow money to get us through.

Never again.

I'm bloody starving and so are the DC and we've got nothing.

I hate Tesco.

Titania

I had to do this myself back in the day, so if you think I am goading or superior, forget it.

I am not.

Just practical. But I can be now after a spell of practical starvation, lesson learned. Always be prepared.

TitaniasCloset · 03/09/2017 21:52

Ok fair enough, perhaps I'm being over sensitive today.

TitaniasCloset · 03/09/2017 21:54

I'm going to buy a whole load of extra stuff everytime I shop over the next few months, even if it's only a little bit of cash I have, things I can keep in cupboard and freezer. Living like this is bloody miserable.

minisoksmakehardwork · 03/09/2017 21:59

Tesco don't take payment until they have despatched your shopping, or at least ours doesn't. In between me placing an order and the delivery arriving the card I had saved had expired (I booked a week or so ahead). I had a phone call from the dispatching store to explain the card had been declined and asking me to make alternative payment to receive my shopping. I gave card details over the phone and all was well.

It sounds like whatever happened to your delivery occurred when it was en route. Hence payment needing to be refunded. It's a Sunday so shorter trading hours, likely less drivers in so no one to pick up extra deliveries either - we've previously been called to say delivery would be much later due to van break down.

They would have contacted you with the details on your order to explain and to offer alternative delivery, if that was an option. Or even collection - I know that is harder for them due to warehousing, your order potentially still being out somewhere when you turn up at store.

There are also certain products which are always substituted even if you say not to. Baby formula and bread are two of those. So you being left completely without and order and no offer of an alternative seems a bit off to me. Granted I have argued with my Tesco delivery store and the customer services manager (literally the person who answers the phone) about their apparent complete lack of any kind of bread in their store and substituting a completely inappropriate toddler formula for infant formula when the twins were babies. But credit to them, the bread was put on the next run out even though they weren't scheduled for our route and the milk was delivered early the following morning.

I'm glad you are sorted temporarily for food but I do think some of the picture is missing here. Is it possible that the account you had paid from did have less money in than you needed for the order? I've also been in the position of turning an order away when they have phoned to make alternative payment as I simply didn't have the full amount to pay. It was easier to apologise and say no to the delivery then go into store and purchase less than I had ordered.

MarcyMercy · 03/09/2017 22:03

Titania,

There are no rules, if today you feel it, you absolutely feel it.

I know this, some days are better than others for sure.

(Always have an emergency stash though!)

Something I have learned over the years. few tins of baked beans/ soup will keep you going, well it worked for me in the bad times. So they are always in the cupboard and last for years!

And I am still here to tell everyone off! lol.

MuddlingMackem · 03/09/2017 22:10

I don't really use delivery, now that we have a decent Tesco near by, but having read a few horror stories like this about having to wait for a refund, I would only ever use a credit card for a delivery never a debit card. Of course, that doesn't work for anyone who avoids credit cards.

christinarossetti · 03/09/2017 22:20

This has just happened to me.

Delivery due on Friday evening, didn't show (a number of contradictory reasons given, not particularly interested, just want my shopping thanks).

Could deliver on the Saturday morning, but they would have to take the money for that, then credit the money from the first shop into my account in 3-5 working days ie a whole week from when they took it out on Friday.

I agree that this is absolutely outrageous practice. Retail is always very quick to take your money, but takes days to refund it. That's not acceptable with basic items like food.

If I had gone to the nearest store and taken the items from the shelf, I would have technically been stealing (even though I'd chosen and already paid for these very same items) as I ordered through online shopping, not that store.

I don't Tweet, but I have been thinking about how to name and shame Tesco about this.

BananaSandwichesEveryDay · 03/09/2017 22:33

IME Tesco take the money on the morning of delivery. We've had them call us twice at Christmas as our bank has declined payment due to the higher cost being an 'unusual ' payment and we've had to call the bank to get them to authorise payment. A pita but on balance, I'm pleased they are being careful about our money. On one occasion we were still on the phone as the delivery van pulled up. All sorted quickly and shopping was handed over.

A few months back, shopping was missing a couple of bags that had been accidentally loaded onto the wrong van. They were very apologetic, resent the entire order later that evening and didn't charge us for either - so, two weeks shopping free of charge. I've always had good service from the customer service people.

Post on their FB page. That soon gets a response

Logans · 04/09/2017 00:07

I think if not getting you money back from Tescos for 3-5 days is this much of a problem then you can't afford to be ordering 2 sets of takeaways in a day OP!! Maybe you and DH can look at the family budgeting?

Nuttynoo · 04/09/2017 07:00

I agree with @Logans. If the refund process is too slow for you, get up and shop yourself. It'll be healthier in it's own way as you'll be moving.

christinarossetti · 04/09/2017 08:56

banana yes, Tesco takes the cash on the morning of delivery. This is fine until the items are returned to the warehouse not delivered, and the money isn't refunded for 3-5 working days later.

People who are judging the OP for her food/finance/life style choices.... do you seriously think it's okay for large companies to take money for goods that they fail to deliver when they contracted to, then not refund the money for the best part of a week, nor allow the customer to acquire these items by taking them off the shelf one of their stores?

Especially for something as basic as food?

It would be useful to focus on the issue at hand, rather than bitchy posts about the OP.

No, it's not ok. But how does that change the fact that buying takeaways when you are that hard up is unwise?

HiJenny35 · 04/09/2017 13:04

Had this twice! Both times it was because they were short of drivers. I use Morrisons now which is delivered by Ocado and have never had any issues with it.

christinarossetti · 04/09/2017 19:08

Logan's, so would it be okay if OP had ordered from Domino's, paid, then not delivered and then not refunded money for the best part of the week?

OP's take away habits aren't relevant to the packet that Tesco and other big companies make by holding customer's money without exchange for goods for a few days.

TitaniasCloset · 04/09/2017 20:39

She said she found some money she didn't realise she had, hence the takeaways. But that's not the point.

Logans · 05/09/2017 07:43

I've already said I don't find Tesco's behaviour acceptable, so I'm not sure why you're asking the above or how it is relevant? But to answer your question, no, it wouldn't be OK for Domino's to do that either.

OP's take away habits aren't relevant to the packet that Tesco and other big companies make by holding customer's money without exchange for goods for a few days.

You're right, it's not relevant to Tescos being slow to return her money. Nor did I ever think it was. It's relevant to family budgeting.

TheNaze73 · 05/09/2017 08:15

Vote with your feet. Whilst I'm sure what they did is covered on page 93 of their T's & C's it's pretty shit.

christinarossetti · 05/09/2017 16:36

OP didn't ask about family budgeting.

Logans · 05/09/2017 17:27

I know she didn't ask about budgeting, but to be frank, it sounds like budgeting might not be a bad idea if OP is buying takeaways whilst saying she has no money.

ItsNachoCheese · 05/09/2017 19:36

I got a pizza instore for ds today its dated the 2nd... wtaf 😡

christinarossetti · 06/09/2017 10:23

I'm sure that OP will benefit greatly from your unsolicited budgeting advice.

BarbarianMum · 06/09/2017 10:46

My mum was starving as a child (i don't mean hungry/very hungry i mean red cross feeding station/ eating rats and grass starving). She always has food in - rice, beans, nothing fancy- because she remembers what it feels like and has passed that fear onto me. She'd prioritise it above everything else - bills, uniform, Christmas presents- if she had to. Its common sense really and can be done for less than a tenner.

Which isn't to say that Tesco's approach wasn't shit here but still.

christinarossetti · 06/09/2017 14:21

I'm not advocating the OP's approach. I couldn't bear not to have staples in and very, very rarely have take aways.

I just objected to criticism being focused on her rather than a multinational company. She hadn't asked for budgeting advice.

BettyOBarley · 06/09/2017 14:35

Asda are just as bad. I placed a £150 order a while back, they took the money on the morning (well it was pending) and then didn't turn up. After two phonecalls it turned out the driver had broken down. They rebooked a slot the next day but then didn't turn up again as they had tried to take another £150 for the 2nd attempt and I didn't have enough left in my account...
