To not enjoy a 'Sunday Roast'?

ManicUnicorn · 03/09/2017 12:45

Is it just me who doesn't get the love for it? It's probably the most boring and bland meal there is. A massive lump of tasteless meat and boiled vegetables, smothered in gravy.

My DF insists he has to have one every single Sunday, but quite honestly I'd rather have a curry, or pizza, or slag Bol, or anything other than a roast fucking dinner.

Why are we so obsessed with having a roast dinner on Sunday in this country?

Best food ever. The end.

Whisky2014 · 03/09/2017 17:41

I agree OP. In fact, I dont like many traditional dishes and prefer a more Worldy cuisine. Roasts and pies and stuff just bore me.

BertrandRussell · 03/09/2017 17:42

What on earth is a Worldly cuisine? Grin

Bettercallsaul1 · 03/09/2017 17:43

BoysofMelody That was a childhood tale of Dickensian grimness. Grin

Whisky2014 · 03/09/2017 17:45

Things from other countries..
Italian food, Chinese food, Moroccan food, Thai, Indian etc etx. You know...from around the world :)

Ta1kinPeece · 03/09/2017 17:46

boysofmelody
look up Cretan cookery to enjoy sundays again

Whole peppers stuffed with rice and fruit and nuts
halved aubergines stuffed with pesto pasta
thick discs of courgette stuffed with nut / herb mix

and serve that with steamed veg and the rest

I'm a confirmed meat eater but the vegan / veggie food on Crete was utterly delicious and SO easy to translate to the UK

Also, a variant of burritos / stuffed pancakes served instead of meat (stuffed with wonderful bean mixes) and then the veg and sides ....

Yes I could imagine a good cauliflower cheese being lovely with lamb.

But oh my I just remembered, cauliflower roasted on its own is also very, very good (whatever spice you want to add is up to you - cumin is very nice, so is just plain rock salt, pepper and paprika).

Sigh. So many yummy things to eat......

TwitterQueen1 · 03/09/2017 18:03

Whisky
'Worldly* in the context you used it implied that you prefer cuisine that is more sophisticated and cultured.

I think a lot of people on this thread would take issue with this! Me included Wink

My roasts are vair vair naice and highly sophisticated....

dementedma · 03/09/2017 18:05

I couldn't believe when I found out on MN that people serve cauliflower cheese with a roast meal. I love cauliflower cheese and I love a roast but together makes me feel queasy just thinking about it!

Whisky2014 · 03/09/2017 18:07

I just mean I don't like traditional UK dishes because I find them boring and I prefer food from around the world!
If you think I'm trying to sound more sophisticated then I think that's your issue not mine.

CaptWentworth · 03/09/2017 18:10

Sunday roast is naice! I even use granny's (god rest her soul) naice crockery. It was naice when she used it, and it's even naicer now!

Notreallyarsed · 03/09/2017 18:10

I took "worldly" to mean from the rest of the world, not better or superior. Although that is the usual use of the word I suppose.

Whisky2014 · 03/09/2017 18:16

notreally yes, that's how I meant it. I just summed it up in a word but should have just written "I prefer food from other countries around the world" :)

TwitterQueen1 · 03/09/2017 18:18

FFS Whisky don't be so touchy - you're imagining and projecting. I don't think anything about you. As an English teacher I was simply stating the meaning of the word in the way that you used it. It's not a personal attack.

MistyMinge · 03/09/2017 18:20

Roast dinners can vary massively in quality and taste. I love a good roast dinner, but don't particularly enjoy cooking them. A decent roast needs a lot of effort imo.

Whisky2014 · 03/09/2017 18:21

Oh. I thought your comment was about how most people on the thread were going to take umbrage with me so just thought I'd confirm!
This thread has made me order a curry :D

Whisky2014 · 03/09/2017 18:21

Carvery roasts are the worst in my opinion.

Notreallyarsed · 03/09/2017 18:22

I always thought so Whisky but the one near us is amazing, and I'm very picky Smile

Sparklingbrook · 03/09/2017 18:25

YY the carvery near us is amazing, they must vary a lot. You hear tales of dry meat and veggies under the heat lamps for hours on end.
I wouldn't want to go to one like that.

corythatwas · 03/09/2017 18:25

English language is tricky, isn't it? What Whisky clearly meant was "world food", that is "food from around the world". But as an adjective, presumably it would mean "food that isn't really right for the religious and high-minded". As in "we would like to serve Cretan aubergines when Cousin Geraldine comes around on Sunday, but her husband is an archdeacon and perhaps it would seem a teeny bit worldly".

HappylandToysEverywhere · 03/09/2017 18:28

Go to a decent Carvery!!! One wth great reviews. Or a pub that does an amazing Sunday lunch. You'll soon change your mind x

TwitterQueen1 · 03/09/2017 18:28

I'd be very surprised if anyone disagreed with you about loving other foods from around the world Whisky Wink. I love ME food particularly.

HappylandToysEverywhere · 03/09/2017 18:28

Museummum In all my 33 years I have NEVER heard anyone say that?!

gingercat02 · 03/09/2017 18:30

Not boring at all. My orange and tarragon chicken and all the trimmings smells delicious. I.love a roast they are so flexible

Comps83 · 03/09/2017 18:31

Hmmmm I don't mind them but hardly ever have them . Think my problem is that they remind me of hangovers
