There's a mouse in my kitchen and I'm terrified to go in there.

Earlier this evening I went to the kitchen to get a snack only to be greeted by a MOUSE I saw it ran across the count towards where my microwave is. I ran out screaming because it was the first time I'm seeing one in my house and I hate them, they make my skin crawl. Now I'm setting here terrified to go in there.Sad

It's really fine! I had a mouse for the first time a few months ago, and it was also a shock!

I caught it in a tupperware box and released it outside. It was quite cute.

We laid Rentokil advanced mouse traps, caught three more, all small, and haven't had anymore yet.

Lay out traps. I would throw away all food not completely sealed or in fridge, and clean out everything, cabinets, drawers, worktops, floors - the lot.

PurpleTango · 02/09/2017 22:51

What do you think the mouse will do if you enter the kitchen? Devour you?? Its a mouse not a stegosaurus

MollyHuaCha · 02/09/2017 22:51

Please get a humane mouse trap from DIY store. Then you can release your mouse in the woods.

BubbleAnimal · 02/09/2017 22:52

Oh god OP I feel for you. Is there anyone else who can go in there? Or bring you some traps tomorrow? I'm petrified of them, and when I had them, refused to go in that room until DP has come over with traps etc. There sadly wasn't just one, but many, but over four to five months we blocked them all out. Two to three years on I still jump all the time, but haven't seen any sign of them.

ForgotwhatIcameinherefor · 02/09/2017 22:56

I feel your pain op (couldn't bring myself to call you sh*y!) here's my tip - keep the kitchen door shut and pop out to 24 hr supermarket and buy a couple of traps, and a ball of string: tie a very long length of string to the trap and then set it along a plinth/skirting board. Then when mouse caught, from a very safe distance you can drag trap out to wheely bin and dispose.
(Obv will need to investigate and block up point of entry asap too.)

LaurieMarlow · 02/09/2017 22:58

I feel for you OP. Ignore the shit about humane traps, they are pests and by releasing them you are only making them someone else's problem.

Snap traps, top of the range, fill them with peanut butter/chocolate and you'll soon get rid of the little fuckers.

LaurieMarlow · 02/09/2017 23:04

That string tip is genius forgot

shittyshitybangbang · 02/09/2017 23:13

@missmollyhadadolly there's nothing cute about little bastards.

I have the kitchen door closed but my DS's bottles and formula is in there so I will have to go in there at some point but I really don't want to see it again I'm itchy all over just thinking about it.

Have you ever heard that song by UB40?

LuLuuuuuuu · 02/09/2017 23:19

Poor OP

I am like you .. Its not that I hate them , its their sudden appearance and then the speed . Shudder.

Make a lot of noise if you must do formula, put a radio on . I very much doubt it will come out then but I feel for you .

shittyshitybangbang · 02/09/2017 23:19

I don't really want to set traps, it means I have to get close enough to release it or get rid of it when it dies.

indulgentberries · 02/09/2017 23:20

At least it's not a rat....

missmollyhadadolly · 02/09/2017 23:20

Their gnawing and droppings aren't cute, but the little blighters themselves are cute, all tiny and furry and pink nosed.

Rats on the other hand 😷

NC4now · 02/09/2017 23:21

Who else is singing it?

missmollyhadadolly · 02/09/2017 23:21

Well they have babies every 6 weeks so you need to do something pretty sharpish!

LuLuuuuuuu · 02/09/2017 23:23

Apparently (though no good to you right now) you can buy plug in things that is inaudible to the human ear but meant to keep them away . I have cats and one is a particularly good mouser . Not seen any or some time I'm pleased to say

EarlessToothlessVagabond · 02/09/2017 23:23

I'm singing the song. Sorry OP.

It's going to be an earworm as I try to go to sleep now.

moofolk · 02/09/2017 23:24

chocoholics It's a rat. :)

missmollyhadadolly · 02/09/2017 23:25

The plug in things don't work on mice already settled in your home.

Chatoyant · 02/09/2017 23:26

We had mice back last year, the only way I'd go into the kitchen at night was wearing my wellies and stamping my feet a few times before I looked in to give them chance to scarper. Horrid things, I feel for you op.
Tomorrow get some traps and try and block up any gaps where they may have got in.

DrDreReturns · 02/09/2017 23:28

Get a traditional snapper trap. Any rodent that comes into my house shitting and pissing everywhere gets killed. We've had a few in our loft and I am now ruthless with them. The humane traps aren't as effective in my experience and you have to take the mice quite a distance away or they come back.
On a serious note keep snapper traps away from young kids and pets.
If you don't set a trap you could use poison - but you still have a body to dispose off. If they ingest poison and crawl somewhere inaccessible to die you really have got a smelly problem.

BubbleAnimal · 02/09/2017 23:29

We filled all holes with wire wool. And the ones from the outside with wire wool and expandable foam to make it really hard. Don't forget you need to fill a whole any bigger than your finger nail, their skulls compress.

Are you in terraced housing? Ours were running through the walls, the neighbours and I had to do a conscious effort of getting rid of them together.

Sarahsue1 · 02/09/2017 23:38

I can't advise you other than to say i was in your position a couple of years ago and i had to go back in the kitchen after seeing it to get my phone. So i went in wearing wellies in august and gardening gloves incase it tried to touch me Aaaaaaaaaaaaaargh. Hopefully you are not as deranged as i am. Long term: if you see 1 you almost always have more than 1. Get pest control. 2. Is there any different bottle you can use? Mice carry so many diseases if it has got anywhere near it or smelt the formula and touched it then 🙈☠️🚫. A bait box is a good idea for a few days too - a sealed one. Put it by skirting boards / nooks and crannies etc. I feel for you seriously - i hate the bastards. They always turn up UNINVITED and i don't want them spreading diseases in my house!

HiggeldyPiggeldy · 02/09/2017 23:39

I am terrified of mice, I know its not rational but for me its the same as some people feel about spiders, so I would be the same as you OP and was when I had them, I think its the speed that they move at. Have you got a brush or something handy that you can carry and knock about to scare any that might be in there? the best way to get rid of them is a cat, when I saw one in my kitchen I let the cat that had decided to adopt us in, he caught 4 and touch wood I havent seen any since, I was told its the smell of them in the house no idea if its true but Im bloody glad they seem to have gone!

Sarahsue1 · 02/09/2017 23:41

And yes to what bubble said. Terraced house for me too - neighbour tells me she had mice and rats for 3 years and 'in london you're never that far from them anyway'. Had to teach her about pest control and coerce her into a joint mission. All pests gone now but we had traps, wire wool and still keep a bait box in the hall hidden behind the table and in the garden under the patio ledge.
