Best restaurant in England?

NSEA · 02/09/2017 19:25

Can I ask what has been your best restaurant? I'm not talking favourite Saturday night evening out. I mean those ultra special restaurants where you pay ££££s and get 16 courses or something and its all about the experience etc.

Really want to do this. A friend has been to Leeds Man behind the Curtain and it looks fantastic, though Im not a fan of sea food so I am looking for similar but different!

Thanks!!

Paul Ainsworth at number 6 - padstow - was an amazing accidental booking

Closer to home - The Bay Horse, Hurworth (co.durham / north yorks border)

We have heard good things about the Raby Hunt but not yet managed to book

Bellie99 · 02/09/2017 21:04

Le Manoir
Le Gavroche
Reads with rooms

PidgeonSpray · 02/09/2017 21:04

Winteringham Fields near the Humber bridge/ Scunthorpe.

Taster menus
Intimate setting

They have rooms also

Think it used to be michellen star. But wither way it's amazing

babypossum · 02/09/2017 21:05

The Ledbury, J Sheekey's and the Vineyard Hotel's food/wine tasting menu.

wonkylegs · 02/09/2017 21:06

Oh yes the Box Tree in Ilkley & the Angel at Hetton are both great.

Nannplum666 · 02/09/2017 21:07

Manchester House in Manchester is lovely - very down to earth and friendly but absolutely amazing food - would go back in a heart beat!

Grilledaubergines · 02/09/2017 21:10

Claridges is fabulous for dinner. Really excellent experience. The Connaught is also pretty special.

scottishbride · 02/09/2017 21:13

The Yorke Arms. Also near Harrogate - restaurant with rooms, amazing relaxed service and great food
Thanks for the thread!

Restaurant Sat Bains (although we went years ago so not sure what it is like now but it's gained an extra Michelin star so can't be that bad) or Pollen Street Social in London. Sat Bains is on an industrial estate outside Nottingham so a very strange location but their rooms were lovely and the breakfast was great.

KTD27 · 02/09/2017 21:14

If you're in any way a sushi fan the best place in London is called sushi tetsu. There are 7 seats. 7. Its proper special occasion dining and you have to have a day to spare to make the booking.

desperatelyseekingcaffeine · 02/09/2017 21:16

Another vote for Winteringham Fields - not Michelin starred but should be. Will work around dietary requirements and even dislikes, rooms are lovely too, we stayed in the converted dovecote.

Fischers at Baslow Hall Derbyshire is great too. Friendly, intimate and staff are welcoming with no pretension.

Is Sat Bains disappointing then? It's next on my list to go to, but may reconsider!

Grilledaubergines · 02/09/2017 21:18

Dining at the Randolph in oxford was pretty delicious too.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 02/09/2017 21:23

Heston Blumenthal's Dinner was one of the most interesting and memorable meals I have ever had: Le Gavroche is always special: Le Manoir wonderful but my go to favourite place for overall experience is always The Ledbury. The restaurant is luxurious and comfortable and completely not flashy, the food is divine and the staff so warm and friendly and knowledgeable- we leave every time feeling like we have spent an evening amongst friends which is an extraordinary achievement.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 02/09/2017 21:23

The Ledbury, if you can get a table.

hotcrossbun83 · 02/09/2017 21:28

The River Cafe near Hammersmith, so so so delicious but relaxed and chic and perfect

Sarahsue1 · 02/09/2017 21:34

Another vote for River Cafe. Also:
Otto's
Riva (Barnes)
Clove Club
Ledbury
Lyle's

candycandles · 02/09/2017 21:37

28 church row in Hampstead has to be my number one. The food and the atmosphere beats any of the other apparently 'best' restaurants I've been too

SheSaidHeSaid · 02/09/2017 21:46

I've eaten at Heston's restaurant in London, Dinner, a few times and can recommend it. It's a little expensive but not astronomically so.

I REALLY want to go to The Fat Duck but it gets booked up way in advance (and I'm disorganised) plus it IS very expensive so would, in my eyes, be for a special occasion.

TooManyBigFatLies · 02/09/2017 21:49

I'm not a fan of a lot of the restaurants mentioned in this thread. Fancy fussy food isn't to my taste and I also don't like to be fussed over when I eat. I know you don't have to eat it all but tasting menus are just too much food.

If it were me I would chose The Cinnamon Club in London or maybe Cafe Zedal (at lunch time)

A PP mentioned a sushi restaurant. I'd love that!

123MothergotafleA · 02/09/2017 21:50

The Heifer Wensleydale, Yorkshire are fantastic imho.
Great cooking, service and ambience. Go there if you're in the area, you will not be disappointed.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 02/09/2017 21:51

L'Enclume in Cartmel, by the racecourse. Cartmel is not a big place but it's well worth a visit! I am very glad to live nearby so I can get the sticky toffee pudding!

Haggisfish · 02/09/2017 21:55

Old downton lodge near Ludlow. Perfect.

Acdmad · 02/09/2017 21:56

Another vote for L'Enclume. We did a package where we stayed 2 nights in the village and had a meal at the sister restaurant the second night. The whole stay was fantastic and we are already planning another visit in the next couple of years.

The sticky toffee shop is amazing but avoid going when the races are on or a local event. It can get very crowded in the village centre.

Lambbone · 02/09/2017 21:59

If you are near the Lakes you might want to try The Lake Road Kitchen in Ambleside. Marvellous food of the forage-y sort.

Also in Ambleside is the lovely Old Stamp House. Not as modern but just as good.

Not managed to get to L'Enclume yet but we loved Roganic.

welshweasel · 02/09/2017 22:02

I really loved sat bains (and menu Gordon jones but it's a very different sort of place!).

My absolute favourite though is The Whitebrook, near Monmouth. Fabulous food, nice rooms, gorgeous location and incredible value for this sort of meal.
