AIBU - girls bras

Alibobbob · 01/09/2017 23:10

I am trying to find some bras for my 11 year old. AIBU to think these should be plain, boring, non-mounded and non-padded. I can't find any for school without the padding or moulding. She has sensory issues so won't wear them if they are uncomfortable and she is really shy so doesn't want to draw any attention to herself. She will be a new year 7 in a few days 😳

How about a crop top instead?

AlexanderHamilton · 01/09/2017 23:12

If she has sensory issues (my dd has asd) then the moulded ones will probably be best as they are much softer comfortable.

altiara · 01/09/2017 23:18

I got DDs in M&S but not in the lingerie department, I got them in the children's dept - girls vests section next to the crop tops. Then took her to the adults dept for measuring. The pack of bras I got were called first bras and were 3 for £10. Very similar to crop top at the front but bra strap at the back. The measuring lady also said no underwire for 2 years. I think there was a simple bra range in the ladies lingerie as well but there was so many bras it was hard to find the simple plain ones!

thatorchidmoment · 01/09/2017 23:21

Marks and spencer do plain white stretchy crop tops for girls that might suit her. They are a halfway house between vests and bras. My very tall 9yo DD recently started to get small breast buds and her school uniform logos were rubbing her nipple so she started wearing them a few months ago and finds them really comfy although obviously they felt a bit different for the first bit while she got used to having something fitted around her chest. Nobody has commented as far as I know, and she is not self-conscious about them.

xFreckleFacex · 01/09/2017 23:22

Primark have non padded bras. Just recently started buying them for my own DD. They only seem to come in plain white though, they come in twos x

Ribrabrob · 01/09/2017 23:24

They're hard to describe but in Primark a few weeks ago I saw some very plain bras - no underwire, no clip etc they were pretty much a bandage type bra with very very light moulding around the beast area. Might be worth having a look.

thatorchidmoment · 01/09/2017 23:24

Here are the ones I got for DD. There are also more sporty styles.

crop tops

The Angel range at M&S are really good.

littlepeas · 01/09/2017 23:27

I would take her to be measured - not in M&S, they haven't got a clue. John Lewis?

Nuttynoo · 01/09/2017 23:29

The moulded, padded ones are often the most comfortable. They won't show nipple outline and so girls feel less self-conscious wearing them under t-shirts, and you can get them made of 100 percent cotton.

Maplestaple · 01/09/2017 23:30

My girls will not wear anything padded or with lace or bows or anything that draws attention to them even wearing a bra. Dd2 can still squeeze into primark and the only ones she will wear are soft sports bra type ones. They only come in purple and orange though.

Was an absolute nightmare finding white ones for dd1 who is also a yr 7 and wearing white shirts. The only ones she would wear are from the bloody pound shop. They are soft and white and cover her up lovely. Saw some similar ones in matalan but they weren't soft.

Dandeliondelilah · 01/09/2017 23:34

Surely these would be just the job? Stretchy cotton in a bra shape:

estuarygirl · 01/09/2017 23:42

Debenhams do really nice first bras, not padded or moulded, just cotton.

usder · 01/09/2017 23:44

John Lewis do lovely bras that where my oldest 2 dd's get theirs!

They also do some lovely soft crop top that are just a little more on the front up side rather than babyish

BorisTrumpsHair · 01/09/2017 23:49

I was in Uniqlo on Oxford St recently and they have amazing over the head bras and a whole lingerie dept there. All too small for my giant boobs, but I thought lovely for young women/girls.

they were molded, but wireless and really soft and looked super comfy

Wearing padded/moulded bras isn't usually about wanting dc to have mini wonderbras, it's because they offer more protection when they're sensitive around puberty, and more coverage.

If she doesn't want them you could try sports bras, still offer the support but no underwire and are easy to get in plain white

user1498240695 · 02/09/2017 00:50

Agree with other posters. Mine started with crop tops and comfy bra tops. I have an asd daughter and she massively prefers moulded.

GreatFuckability · 02/09/2017 01:10

i was going to suggest sports bras. thats what my DD wears mostly. but yes, the moulded/tshirt ones give better coverage than others, so imo are better for young self conscious girls.

VestalVirgin · 02/09/2017 01:21

If she doesn't need a bra, I'd go with a simple undershirt/short top.

Could never get used to wearing bras myself. As I don't need them I never made a huge effort to find the perfectly fitting one.

Potato25 · 02/09/2017 01:43

When I was that age I pretty much lived in these: www.marksandspencer.com/3-pack-cotton-crop-tops-with-stretch-6-16-years-/p/p60102491?image=SD_04_T71_7477A_YZ_X_EC_0&color=BlackandWhite&prevPage=plp&pdpredirect

Really comfy and boring while you're just starting your bra journey.

PoppyH56 · 02/09/2017 07:02

I am 23 now and started wearing bras when I went secondary school as I found the shirts were so much more fitting therefore would often show a lot through them. I personally wouldn't go for a sports bra as from experience sports bras aren't very breathable and used to make me sweat more in my shirt and still weren't thick enough to cover things like random nipple hardening (which really was embarrassing in the middle of class in a white shirt 😩) so I used to just wear non padded bras. Primark do so many versions now! Have a little root around. I got some from there the other day to wear when I'm just at home by myself as they're so comfy!!

Gorgosparta · 02/09/2017 07:21

Dd always picked out one at m&s.

Crop top/sports bras at first. The moulded soft ones. I wear moulded ones and find more comfortable. As does dd.

Alibobbob · 02/09/2017 09:40

Thank you everyone - I thought mounded were just the same as padded. I will see if she finds the mounded ones comfortable as a lot of you have suggested these are better as not see through.

Thank you everyone.

No moulded ones arent. Although they are obviously slightly thicker than just cotton ones.

I like them as they give better support, soft and (i must have heavy boobs) they keep their shape. Bras with no support in the cup dont last long for me.
