AIBU - girls bras

Alibobbob · 01/09/2017 23:10

I am trying to find some bras for my 11 year old. AIBU to think these should be plain, boring, non-mounded and non-padded. I can't find any for school without the padding or moulding. She has sensory issues so won't wear them if they are uncomfortable and she is really shy so doesn't want to draw any attention to herself. She will be a new year 7 in a few days 😳

Moulded bras arent "padded" and nor are they sexual. Theyre just underwear which camoflages the nipples. I do not see why everyone freaks out. Theyre functional bras. Not push up, not nipple tassels. Everyone is so damn terrified of young girls and what theyre wearing.

Notevilstepmother · 02/09/2017 10:19

It's not about being terrified, it's about what her daughter (with sensory issues) will feel comfortable in. Hmm

Alibobbob · 02/09/2017 10:25

Lol Branleuse you couldn't be further off the mark. Not evil stepmother you nailed it.

We will go shopping today and look at the mounded bras. I will let you know if she feels these are right for her.

Thank you once again everyone for your advice. I am glad I asked the question and grateful for all responses.

Peacocks sell plain ones. They are not padded as such but moulded which my dd prefers as no nipple issues. I actually totally get that so I'm happy with those. They are no ludicrously overpriced either.

TeenTimesTwo · 02/09/2017 10:44

My DD1 with some sensory issues, and my DD2 both have the Angel range from M&S. The most basic white & tan two pack. No annoying lace, cut out the labels, moulded for comfort and no-nipple showing.

Or as others have suggested the crop tops, 5 pack M&S. My DD2, just going into y8 assured me that there was a mix of crop tops and bras in y7.

Branleuse · 02/09/2017 10:50

Sorry, i didnt read the whole thread properly, ignore my previous post x

Alibobbob · 02/09/2017 10:55

Lol it's ok Branleuse.

I never thought of Peacocks I will put them on my list - will try Matalan first, M&S, John Lewis, Primark and Peacocks. Hopefully I haven't missed any.

She is quite big so I may need to buy online.

We've had similar problems. DD just fits a 28AA, but not always. I like 100% natural fibres (as I get a rash with polyester/nylon) and she has sensory issues that mean stupid extras like bows often cause extreme scratching due to the thread attachment next to the skin.

Crop tops often aren't suitable as many have a little ruching at the front, and this can irritate my DD. There is a 28AA that is a bra in Matalan, 2 for £5. She likes these best because they are most comfortable. They are not padded or moulded.

Long term, I am going to experiment with making her some bras. I was inspired by someone here saying they'd done a Craftsy course and made some bras for themselves. Apparently children often started learning to sew by making undies as it doesn't use much material, and if it doesn't look great first time not many will see it.

I looked at www.panty.hanty.net - hope link works, but there are loads of sites out there. If you're interested pm me. I found most bra patterns for sale by big names start at 32AA, which isn't much help for a first bra. I'm hoping to come up with a design one day.

lljkk · 02/09/2017 11:16

Padding is Good. New nipples chafe & padding protects them. Also, no girl wants to think her new nipples could be visible (padding hides, and nipples emerge before the rest of breast does). Moulding takes away worry that the shape might be wrong.

RedSkyAtNight · 02/09/2017 11:28

I see others have said it but my DD also prefers the moulded Angel range from M&S. They also come in a smaller back size than most bras (most styles don't come in small enough sizes for pre-teens/teens).

My DD is also 11 and going into Y7 and I've also got her a sports bra which covers her breasts a bit more which she says she is planning to wear on PE days to avoid self conciousness while changing.

M&S, Debenhams and John Lewis stock plenty of ultra plain, non padded, non wired bras. They also offer bra fitting services and are always professional and discreet.

I started buying my daughter these lightly padded t.shirt bra's: www.marksandspencer.com/2-pack-cotton-rich-padded-t-shirt-a-d-bras/p/p22191550?prevPage=plp because my daughter has very prominent nipples and she is incredibly self-conscious (especially when getting changed for p.e..

Out of interest OP, where have you been looking for bra's? (taking into account that you said you've tried 'everywhere').?

Delilah21D00LoT · 02/09/2017 12:14

Sorry OP I misread your post and note you didn't say you had tried 'everywhere' - I'm trying to read two different things at the same time. Many apologies.
x

My dd wears M&S Angel bras. M&S Angel is their teen girl range and they are cotton and I think they came in a multipack of one plain, one patterned. She wears plain for school and patterned at weekends.

dementedpixie · 02/09/2017 13:03

Dd wears these in a 30D (age 13)

RESULT - we went to Matalan and bought these....

www.matalan.co.uk/product/detail/s2655160_c323/3-pack-padded-lace-bralettes-pink

We will continue to look for something similar.

She did get bored and have a bit of a strop - refused to buy anything so I just picked them up and paid for them. I gave them to her to try on when we got home. She said I would have to cut the lace off.

Tired and happyish.

There is no way my Dd would wear those I'm afraid. They would irritate her something awful.

These are what she has.

TeenTimesTwo · 02/09/2017 15:29

Sorry, but I think you have been a bit daft.
Your DD has sensory issues and yet you seem to have bought the most lacy thing possible!
Take them back and buy the M&S ones linked by Alexander (and probably others). A perfect first bra. Or stick with crop tops if she's not that developed.
(Plus racing back isn't great for summer tops with wider necks or 'vest' tops as straps are much more likely to show.)

GreenTulips · 02/09/2017 15:32

I'd say peacocks - fairly cheap but last till they grow

I don't like the mounded bras either - feels like too much stuff!! And they do add a cup size.

mummmy2017 · 02/09/2017 15:41

Asda did some good ones for about £3 each, but the other day I was in Primarks and they were brilliant as well.

Alibobbob · 02/09/2017 15:43

Teen - thanks for that She has tried them on and finds them comfortable - I haven't had to cut the lace out. If she had hated them I would have returned them.

TeenTimesTwo · 02/09/2017 15:46

If she's happy that's fine. Smile
Good luck to her with starting secondary.

noeffingidea · 02/09/2017 15:52

My daughter who has ASD wears these (in white)
tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/p/Black-Seamless-Unpadded-Bra/124016750-Black?searchTerm=:relevance&searchProduct=
Very comfy, and she can put them on herself as there is no back fastenings.

Alibobbob · 02/09/2017 16:05

Noeffingidea they look fantastic. I will deffo buy some to try - thank you.

Thanks Teen she's looking forward to it.

OP posts:
Alibobbob · 02/09/2017 16:06

She's still wearing the Matalan one and isn't complaining. 😀

Alibob just to warn you, the Sainsbury bra might be a little bit big for an 11 year old. My daughter is a very small girl and she has only really just grown into that size over the last year (age 16). Before that I bought her a similar bra from Peacocks, which definitely come up smaller. She was in the size 6-8 for a little while.
