To think that it takes more than 5 minutes to hang out a load of washing

Resurgam2016 · 01/09/2017 09:31

All over Mumsnet people are heard saying 'it only takes 5 minutes' to hang out a load. Kim and Aggie say it too.

I am sorry you are all WRONG. I have done time trials under controlled scientific conditions timed myself and it takes at least 10. I am not a slow pegger but I am a thorough one. So WIBU to declare that a proper 'hang' (

Aah. This throws the cat amongst the pigeons: 04:15:58

There we go then, that concludes the experiment, mine took - from door of machine, into basket, up one flight of stairs, out French windows, peg out normal load (not hurrying, turning inside out things the right way) - 04:09:92.

(Caveat: only one pair of socks - one peg per sock)

supersop60 · 01/09/2017 11:42

Just timed it. 20 items = 5' 12". Quicker than I thought.

hoyhoy44 · 01/09/2017 11:42

not really sure how long it takes me, depends what i am hanging but most of the time i end up chatting to neighbours so i waste a lot of time

TheDogsMother · 01/09/2017 11:44

Test complete. 6 minutes, 6 seconds. There you have your answer Grin

Time includes getting washing out of the machine, pre-sorting ready to hang in ascending order, going outside, putting out the arms of the already erect rotary airer, grabbing a chair to place basket on to eliminate bending to floor level, return to house to grab washing and pegs. Hang out washing with a two line gap (only load today), one peg per sock or newborn clothing, two pegs for everything else.

Full disclosure: timer was stop to return to house to collect sunglasses and to attend to 7wk old baby several times!

Resurgam2016 · 01/09/2017 11:46

Flippetydip so quick to dismiss?

We need a statistically significant sample to get a truly accurate HANG metric www.nss.gov.au/nss/home.nsf/pages/Sample+size+calculator
God knows how we do it though. Is our population all the laundry hangers of the UK or just those on mumsnet? Is the figure different? How do we make allowance for the sock factor?

Where do you all live that it is warm enough to dry washing outside?

LittleR1e · 01/09/2017 11:47

Pegs are not in colour order though...

GiraffesLikeToDance · 01/09/2017 11:50

Same kind of people who say "I whizz round with a Hoover daily only takes 2 mins"

Really? 2 mins? The word they always use is whizz as well. As if the vacuum has special whizz setting that sends them round quickly

Mumski45 · 01/09/2017 11:52

But it doesn't need to be warm to dry washing outside. It just needs to be DRY.

Mittens1969 · 01/09/2017 11:53

Lol, I love this thread! 2 minutes to do the hoovering, that I'd love to see!! Grin

Resurgam2016 · 01/09/2017 11:54

So Whizz is the laundry equivalent of Pop?

Interesting. Because you certainly wouldn't whizz the laundry on the line but you might pop round the house with the hoover.

DH leaves the pegs on the line so I have to remove them before I can start hanging. He's a time-robbing bollockhead.

GriswaldFamilyVacation · 01/09/2017 11:54

Adult clothes 5 minutes.

Children's clothes or socks about 6 hours. 5 kilo of laundry is not equal.

Flippetydip · 01/09/2017 11:57

But it doesn't need to be warm to dry washing outside. It just needs to be DRY.

I concur - I dry washing outside all year round (live in SW of England). That said, it is beautifully warm today. I hate using the tumble dryer - we have a washer-drier and the only time I've used the dryer part in the last 6 years was during a vomiting bug - horrible memories!

OP - I bow to your more scientific judgement on this but I feel I'm now going to time every wash I hang out because I am that tragic. It's one of the reasons I got rid of my fit-bit - I became too obsessional - I love stats! I very much look forward to a properly laid out results' table at some point in the near future.

Longhairmightcare · 01/09/2017 11:57

I think I take longer as I like to make sure my multicoloured pegs are used in pairs of the same colour, so item hung with 2 pink pegs, another hung with 2 purple. 1 pink peg and one purple peg annoys me. Also where possible I'll want the peg colour to match or complement the garment.
I also use the nice minky pegs on my favourite garments and then the rubbish Tesco own brand ones on other things DHs clothes
Probably not a process that is strictly necessary though.

deadringer · 01/09/2017 11:58

Sexlube yes that's what I do. Living in damp ol Ireland it's rare for the washing to be 100% dry, and I use the hot press for storage mostly so don't put it in there. Aside from the fact that it's usually a little damp I suppose I feel there might get be insects spider willies in it so don't put it away immediately.

onalongsabbatical · 01/09/2017 11:59

14 minutes and 50 seconds from door of washing machine to stepping away from line. Mahoosive load but not a lot of pants. Job done. One king size duvet cover, eight teatowels, one bath towel and multiple random garments.

fleshmarketclose · 01/09/2017 11:59

It only takes me five minutes to peg them out but that is because I have sorted them into size and colour order as I take them from the washing machine. I also pair the socks and make sure the underwear isn't inside out. Then I throw them over my shoulder and peg like Billy-O so as to avoid the neighbour stopping me to chat which would make a five minute job take at least 20 minutes.

UrsulaPandress · 01/09/2017 12:02

Trust me, the SW of England is a very different climate to the NW of England. Today is dry but cold and no way on earth would the washing dry outside.

Resurgam2016 · 01/09/2017 12:09

I'm beginning to see something like this forming:

To think that it takes more than 5 minutes to hang out a load of washing

Resurgam2016 I love you. Grin

Resurgam2016 · 01/09/2017 12:15

I love me too Grin

But I am supposed to be working. This is sooooo much more interesting IMO

And it's at the cutting edge of scientific thought. Only ignored for millennia because laundry is traditionally a female chore and therefore dismissed by society as a whole.

CRUSH THE PATRIARCHY

Resurgam, you are brilliant. That's all.
