To think that it takes more than 5 minutes to hang out a load of washing

Resurgam2016 · 01/09/2017 09:31

All over Mumsnet people are heard saying 'it only takes 5 minutes' to hang out a load. Kim and Aggie say it too.

I am sorry you are all WRONG. I have done time trials under controlled scientific conditions timed myself and it takes at least 10. I am not a slow pegger but I am a thorough one. So WIBU to declare that a proper 'hang' (

I agree.

Towels take 3 mins.

A load with socks takes about 4 hours.

Yanbu

ssd · 01/09/2017 09:32

damn tooting

Mothervulva · 01/09/2017 09:33

Takes me longer I think... However I'm often watching Ru Paul's Drag Race at the same time, so it's not a fair test.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/09/2017 09:34

Takes me about 5 but I'm speedy when it comes to anything house work related.

AlpacasPackOwls · 01/09/2017 09:35

Takes my husband 5 minutes with his middle pegging. Grrr. Takes longer for any person who takes care. Unless they've trained hard for speed.

ListenToYourHeart · 01/09/2017 09:36

Hanging out baby washing is the worst!
Feels like a million tiny items that are never going to end Grin

YANBU!

MrsWooster · 01/09/2017 09:37

6 minutes. 7.5 with multiple child socks.

Resurgam2016 · 01/09/2017 09:37

Two pegs per item - One per sock is required to comply with protocol

Three is excessive IMO

DH can hang a full load in about 30 seconds, although his method just consists of draping the wet stuff on the rail Angry

cornishclottedcream · 01/09/2017 09:40

YANBU! Takes me at least 10 minutes to try and match the socks as I like them to hang on the line in pairs.
If it starts to rain I can get the line emptied in about 2 minutes! Grin

Everytimeref · 01/09/2017 09:41

Don't take long to hang mine out but that's because "smalls" go in the tumble dryer. Life to short to hang out socks!

NoSquirrels · 01/09/2017 09:42

At least 10. Anyone who says otherwise is doing it wrong & will be less efficient in the long run anyway when it all takes longer to dry!

witchofzog · 01/09/2017 09:43

I hang my socks in pairs with 1 peg but with only one sock side attached to let the air in. They dry really quickly like this and its quickerand the socks take less room Grin

SnowiestMountain · 01/09/2017 09:43

I agree, DH can but that's middle pegs, stuff inside out etc to hang it out to my exacting standards it's probably 7/8 mins

StatueInTheSky · 01/09/2017 09:45

my fucking whirly is like and assault course...it's too low, so I keep garroting myself, or knocking my specs off, it gets tangled in the rose bush, it won't turn if the wash house door is open just a half inch too far
I much prefer a nice long straight line, but then the courtyard looks like a bloody laundry, so I am on a whirly phase....it's not going to last.

drives me crazy

I only hang out big things...anything small goes right into the tumbly, life is too short to hang socks and pants out.

kally195 · 01/09/2017 09:45

Me = 10-15 mins. Socks have to be hung (one peg per sock) in pairs, so they can be paired as they come down. Things have to hung in descending size from the inside out. Clothes have to be grouped (all DD's stuff together etc). I am aware I am ridiculous.

DH = 3 minutes, as his method is apparently just chuck the basket at the line and walk away hoping.

DH doesn't hang much washing out.

AtHomeDadGlos · 01/09/2017 09:46

Does your 10mins include putting up the line?

YogiYoni · 01/09/2017 09:47

Don't take long to hang mine out but that's because "smalls" go in the tumble dryer. Life to short to hang out socks!

^this

It takes DH even less time as he just puts it all in the tumble dryer, including The Jeans I Keep Telling Him Not To Angry

Resurgam2016 · 01/09/2017 09:50

Ooh whirly like the sock tip.

And no the official HANG unit of laundry time measurement (LTM) assumes line is already available for use.

Tumbly dryers considered modern and incompatible with this ancient and internationally established form of measurement.

What sort of mad man hangs socks?! Whack them in the tumble dryer if you have one. Then it definitely takes 5 minutes to hang everything 😀

Resurgam2016 · 01/09/2017 09:54

Tumbly driers = devils work. Official

OP posts:
cakesandphotos · 01/09/2017 09:55

Mine takes about 10. But I like my pegs to match on the same item and as far as possible, I like to match the peg colour to the colour of the item I'm hanging Blush if it's a white load it takes me less time because I don't have any white pegs. Can you tell I don't have children yet??

onalongsabbatical · 01/09/2017 09:57

Yeah, socks together on a thing that can be taken off the line in one piece if it starts to rain. Ditto pants. My pants and his pants separate! Grin Teatowels together. Everything hung from tiniest bit of material possible so that it all dries. As much room between things as poss. 50,000 flipping socks. Need I go on?
Some people, I KNOW just fling it all at the line and peg randomly. They just make work for the rest of us, right?
