To think that it takes more than 5 minutes to hang out a load of washing

Resurgam2016 · 01/09/2017 09:31

All over Mumsnet people are heard saying 'it only takes 5 minutes' to hang out a load. Kim and Aggie say it too.

I am sorry you are all WRONG. I have done time trials under controlled scientific conditions timed myself and it takes at least 10. I am not a slow pegger but I am a thorough one. So WIBU to declare that a proper 'hang' (

Our neighbours ( we over look their garden ) never hang out washing .. like never ! I do get it though because it's a fag but I love drying on the line despite having a dryer . I can't understand people who dry everything , their clothes must be fucked !!

AlternativeTentacle · 01/09/2017 10:58

I hang my socks in pairs with 1 peg but with only one sock side attached to let the air in. They dry really quickly like this and its quickerand the socks take less room

I hang mine in pairs by the toes, and roll them on the line so that they come off ready paired. :)

ikeadyounot · 01/09/2017 10:59

Sociological perspective: I suspect the difference may be partly caused by those individuals who are too embarrassed to hang their socks, pants on the line to flap in the breeze in front of all the neighbours.

If you're only pegging out a few large things like towels, it's a quick job. If you shamelessly display all your undies (including those with holes in) for everyone to see like I do, it takes for ever.

Resurgam2016 · 01/09/2017 11:01

Aah. This throws the cat amongst the pigeons: 04:15:58

Caveat - it was a less than half load. There was only one (odd...why does that always happen?) sock.

I think this calls for an internationally recognised 'Laundry Basket' similar to the shopping basket food boffins use to calculate the cost of a shop.

It takes 5 minutes in this house.

Abra1d · 01/09/2017 11:03

If you're not doing what treacle suggests and using one of these for smalls and socks--why not! Smile

Surely socks just get hung over the sides of the laundry basket and left outside in the sunniest part.....and life is too short to pair socks! Buy them all the same for each person!

We do both these things!

Titanz · 01/09/2017 11:07

I seriously thought everyone just paired socks when they were dry. I do.

imjessie · 01/09/2017 11:10

Why would anyone give a shit about who can see my underwear ??? I know some people see it as lower class to hang out washing ( we live in an executive new build estate and next door is a big house ) but seriously who cares !🙄.. if you don't like it don't look !

BirdyBedtime · 01/09/2017 11:10

Totally agree that a soctopus is a laundry essential ( although our has a bit of a double life as a pantopus)

Mumski45 · 01/09/2017 11:11

I just timed it 3mins and 45 secs exactly.

Line ready to go but socks are paired ready to fold together when they come in.

How could it possibly take 15 mins - This was not a small load and I wasn't rushing.

Resurgam2016 · 01/09/2017 11:12

Birdy is it a BigPantopus?

LittleR1e · 01/09/2017 11:16

😂 I have to pre-sort, hand in ascending size order, one peg per sock but hung in pairs. Takes me at least 10mins, longer if I'm struggling to reach the outer lines of the rotary drier due to being almost out of my reach!

onalongsabbatical · 01/09/2017 11:19

Pre-sorting and pre-loading of pant- and soc-topuses HAS to be included in time, FFS.
I have a load in. Will be timing it.

abigailgabble · 01/09/2017 11:22

If I do a shit job aka a 'toss and spread' it can be done in 5. A proper job like my mum - 10. Oh how I hate hanging washing..

FiddleFigs · 01/09/2017 11:24

Our fences are nice and high, so neighbours can't see our laundry - I just don't hang underwear and socks outside because SPIDERS MIGHT HIDE IN THEM!!!!!!

LineysRun · 01/09/2017 11:26

It takes about ten minutes to weave through the spiders' webs, gently move the spiders, and remove the stray ones from my hair, just to get near my washing line at the moment.

HeartburnCentral · 01/09/2017 11:26

I am not a slow pegger Grin

Resurgam2016 · 01/09/2017 11:30

For those concerned with displaying their undies shouldn't we be proud of our pants - like stretch marks they 'show that we are alive that we have survived'

OP posts:
TheDogsMother · 01/09/2017 11:32

I'm reading this whilst putting off hanging out a load of washing !

I'm going to time myself in the interest of science and the washing load has a good selection of items. (no soctopus or other such fangled devices though).

Mittens1969 · 01/09/2017 11:33

10 minutes for me, but I use the clothes horse and the tumble dryer for the underwear and socks. Grin

UrsulaPandress · 01/09/2017 11:34

I fucking hate hanging washing out.

I love my tumble drier.

The80sweregreat · 01/09/2017 11:35

my pegs tend to snap, so it takes me ages!!
its a chore i hate, but rather that than cooking.

ikeadyounot · 01/09/2017 11:36

resurgam - that makes me feel better, looking at my neighbour's pristine and eternally undie-less line while my holey pants flap around!!

I have to say, though, if you were to judge by my pants, you'd say I'd only just survived! Grin

deadringer · 01/09/2017 11:39

To the pp who pairs up the socks as you bring them in, do you not air them? I hang everything on the indoor clothes horse for a day or so before I put them away.
