I lost a bag of library books

My DS1 (3) and I go to the library weekly and borrow 12 books, the maximum. We read them for his bed time stories and return them within 7days. We are always careful and bring them back on time. This week we went to the library whilst shopping for his dad's birthday gifts and party hats in his eyes a must at any birthday.

Tonight I've gone to get the library books for his bed time stories and thought I must've left them in the car. Searched the car and they weren't there, nor do I remember loading them in the car. So I've gone and put down the bag of books somewhere whilst out shopping. I usually put them under DS2 (4mo)'buggy. The bag also had £66 worth of clothes from Dorothy Perkins, I bought myself with my birthday money because everyone keeps saying I should treat myself. I've shoved them in the same bag rather than spend 5p on a bag.
I feel so stupid. I've phoned Asda where the car was parked and the last shop I visited and nothing was handed in. This was the only store I could contact because it was 7pm when I realised. I drove to the car park in the hope of it still being there.
I will phone a few more shops in the morning and the library in the hope it's been returned.
I feel awful. AIBU to not be able to sleep. I hate that I have no memory of where I left them. Surely someone decent will hand them in.

Sorry to hear this OP. Are there any local FB groups you could post on? Try and sleep though, it won't help being awake.

ShakeShakeTheMuffin · 29/08/2017 23:42

I do hope that they'll get handed in. Most people would and even those usually less inclined to hand anything in would find little use for a dozen kids' library books and some clothes which are likely to be the wrong size! Really hope they turn up.

Lostlibrarybooks · 29/08/2017 23:48

I'm not on Facebook, maybe I'll join if I get no joy tomorrow.

My DS kept asking me about them and who might have them. I said I'm sure someone will hand them in. I wish I thought to look earlier, it made it worse that I couldn't do anything to look for them.

FGS sake, so not lose sleep over this. It was an accident. You didn't mean for this to happen. In the broad scheme of life, this is NO BIG DEAL. Tell the library what happened and work out an arrangement to replace the books. You seriously need to calm down.

grandOlejukeofYork · 30/08/2017 00:56

I would say that most people, on finding a bag of library books, would return them to the library if it wasn't very far away? I know I would, but it might not be immediately.

ShoutOutToMyEx · 30/08/2017 01:14

If I found them, I'd return them to the library 100%. Must be more people like me. Give them a call tomorrow and see.

Sorry about the clothes OP. That's a shame for you. Depending on where they were found they might have been handed back to the store if they had the tags on?

numbmum83 · 30/08/2017 01:23

This happened a couple of times in our local shopping centre. Bags being left beside the car and a post has been put on social media . 1 post had a Pandora shopping bag amongst other bags all with receipts inside so items could've been taken back but someone handed them in .

Fingers crossed !

Ladybirdbookworm · 30/08/2017 03:12

I was a librarian in a small village library and honestly this is no big deal - explain to the librarian and im sure she will be more concerned that you lost your shopping ' if she dares to make a fuss ( which I'm sure he or she won't- but occasionally you get a jobsworth)
Just say - ill pay the fine in my own time !!!!! It's unfair but the people who don't return books have their charges written off after a certain period and those of us who are honest and return the books late are expected to pay a fine
Sadly libraries need your business more than you need them !
This is no big deal
I really hope you get your shopping back

NancyDonahue · 30/08/2017 07:25

I really hope you get them back, op. If not, the library will be kind and helpful I'm sure, and as for the clothes it's just one of those things.

I once had a bagful of Next clothes stolen. I put it down in Poundland to look at something then went to pick it up and it was gone. Kicked myself for ages about it but finally let it go.

Twice I've gone into the loos in the shopping centre and found a bag of new clothes hanging on the hook behind the door. I handed them in straight away. Most people would. Someone may take them to the library in the hope the books could identify you. Definitely try a FB appeal.

missmollyhadadolly · 30/08/2017 07:25

I hope they are handed in.

We've all been there Brew

Lostlibrarybooks · 30/08/2017 08:17

Some lovely lovely person has handed them in to wilko where I must have left them. Thanks for all the good wishes. My DS actually did a little jump. There are still good people out there. 😁

Brilliant!!

Etymology23 · 30/08/2017 08:21

Yay! Thank goodness! :)

Chottie · 30/08/2017 08:22

That's a lovely ending to your story :)

domesticatedidiot · 30/08/2017 08:25

It was an accident, the library will understand. They probably won't want to charge you with them being children's books, but I think if they don't turn up perhaps offer to buy a couple of books for them as a goodwill gesture.
Honestly though, they'll be fine!
My kids once ripped a library book (one of those lift the flap ones) and I was mortified but they were very understanding.

GoodMorning1 · 30/08/2017 08:27

Yey!

My library once let me buy the book I lost secondhand on Amazon and take it to them as a way of replacing it. The other option was to pay the library full RRP plus an admin charge for them to replace it!

lynmilne65 · 30/08/2017 08:32

I had to pay a fine as all the pages fell out as I
had dropped it in the bath . Blush

Lostlibrarybooks · 30/08/2017 08:32

I had checked out the website and it said you had to pay the full price of the books. My mind was trying to total the costs and remembering how many hard back books there were, alone sometimes reaching over £10 each. It was looking like a very costly stupid mistake.

Brilliant news!

onalongsabbatical · 30/08/2017 08:54

Aw, lovely, so pleased for you!

fluffiphlox · 30/08/2017 08:57

I think most people are OK most of the time, so I'm not surprised that they've been handed in. Good news for you anyway👍

Ladybirdbookworm · 30/08/2017 11:05
