To ask how long it will take to die if we do get nuked

Just this really. How quick? I know the warning, if there is one, will only be a few minutes so nowhere near enough time to get to school and be with DC. But when the bombs hit, is it just a flash of light and then oblivion? Or a longer scarier process? Obviously I hope none of this will actually happen.

NYC, we probably won't get bombed in the UK, at least not deliberately.
By that I mean all out nuclear war, if it ever happens, is more likely to be set of by individuals (not countries) taking control of some nukes and setting them off, causing retaliation...

NotIdiotProof · 29/08/2017 17:44

Just hide it barbs Flowers

Bohemond · 29/08/2017 17:45

This is why I am relatively happy living close to Hinckley Point

Ereshkigal · 29/08/2017 17:46

Absolutely don't watch Threads if you're anxious about this!

SeaEagleFeather · 29/08/2017 17:46

this thread has literally scared me and others to death.

Um, no it hasn't ... unless you're typing from beyond the grave

MagicalRealist · 29/08/2017 17:51

this thread has literally scared me and others to death. please stop!!!!

This thread has literally scared you to death? Wow.

Seriously, just stop reading it if it bothers you that much. You don't get to tell other people what they can and can't talk about. Sorry.

MagicalRealist · 29/08/2017 17:51

BeyondLimits Yes, me too.

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 29/08/2017 17:55

Who are the others who are literally dead? I guess they can't post to tell us though... :(

Ninjakittysmells · 29/08/2017 18:07

Barbs I'm sorry you are scared but that did make me smile Grin

TopBitchoftheWitches · 29/08/2017 18:17

In case we do survive, i'll buy a baseball bat.

Voiceforreason · 29/08/2017 18:22

Please op don't be afraid. I am old now but was young through some tense times. If I had had a pound for every time we were 'on the brink' I would be a rich woman! War, if it comes will be conventional just as in Afghanistan and Iraq. I don't say that lightly having a son in law who served in both theatres. The world will go on just as it always has.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 29/08/2017 18:25

My dad used to tell me about the Cuban Missle crisis, I grew up in the 80s being given horror stories about the Cold War. We were all given leaflets, and talks at school about what to do during the "4 minute warning". And now we have NK.

Please try not to worry, it's not worth it. But I actually think it does us all good to talk about it.

chirpyburbycheapsheep · 29/08/2017 18:26

I live alone..do any of you? What would you do if you survived - stay put and hope your nearest and dearest come for you or venture out and find other survivors? (I won't survive though as I live in London. But on the bright side it would solve the housing crisis here)

WindyWednesday · 29/08/2017 18:29

What has living near to a nuclear power station got to do with it!

LurkingHusband · 29/08/2017 18:29

In case we do survive, i'll buy a baseball bat.

Is that because if you survive, the shops will too Grin ?

Viviennemary · 29/08/2017 18:29

Don't read the Road. It gave me nightmares for weeks.

alltouchedout · 29/08/2017 18:31

Ooooh I've cheered myself up by reading the wikipedia page on nuclear winter. There might not be one! And if there is it might be more of a nuclear autumn than a winter. So that's nice.

Figmentofmyimagination · 29/08/2017 18:32

Earlier this year I read John hersey's famius account from six survivors of Hiroshima. You can find it here - www.google.co.uk/amp/io9.gizmodo.com/read-the-full-text-of-john-herseys-hiroshima-a-story-1722501004/amp

Obviously I guess bombs are much larger now, but still it is an arresting read.

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 29/08/2017 18:33

Well, the population may shrink, but surely viable housing will be rather reduced too?

ShoesHaveSouls · 29/08/2017 18:35

"What has living near to a nuclear power station got to do with it!"

It's a viable target.

What's the odds on Kim Jong-Un having a mysterious illness & passing away over the next few weeks?
I'd say around 90%.

QuestionableMouse · 29/08/2017 18:41

@WindyWednesday

It would probably be targeted.

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 29/08/2017 18:45

I think the logic goes something like this...

Nuclear bomb - big boom
Nuclear bomb on nuclear power station - big badda boom

celeste4 · 29/08/2017 18:46

Kim dying in mysterious circumstances won't sort this out though. Regime change is needed.
