To ask how long it will take to die if we do get nuked

Just this really. How quick? I know the warning, if there is one, will only be a few minutes so nowhere near enough time to get to school and be with DC. But when the bombs hit, is it just a flash of light and then oblivion? Or a longer scarier process? Obviously I hope none of this will actually happen.

Acrossthepond I hope you're right. This article is saying that there's nothing anyone can do to stop Trump launching a preemptive nuclear strike though. And this is from former US intelligence chiefs and missile launch officers Confused

The real shitty thought for me is if it was to go boom , imagine your oh or you at work, kids in school or nursery . Doesn't bear thing about.

alltouchedout · 29/08/2017 21:28

I know there are people who find this thread upsets them but weirdly it is making me feel a bit better. It helps to talk and listen to others about this rather than just stew on it myself. Not sure why, but it does.

Are nuclear power stations strongly defended against attacks? That's always been a particular worry of mine, that some insane group could bomb one. But maybe it's not at all 'easy' to do.

ComputerUserNotTrained · 29/08/2017 21:28

Military and intelligence types' MO is fear and often worst case scenarios. They deal with worst case scenarios. That's not a criticism of them, it's just what they need to do to get their point across. I think it's worth bearing that in mind whenever reading reports like that you linked to, Magical.

ComputerUserNotTrained · 29/08/2017 21:30

One too many worst case scenarios there Grin

bangingmyheadoffabrickwall · 29/08/2017 21:35

Nuclear war totally fascinates me. I have already told kursk in a previous thread (on the preppers board I think) that I will go and live with her/him after a discussion about nuclear survival. Will not forget the tip about top soil. Grin

Obviously I don't want it to happen but I have been on the nukemaps website and had a 'play' with various bombs as well as looked on youtube at various documentaries and bomb explosions just to get a picture of what it could be like.

Russia's 'Tsar Bomba' is the biggest in the world. In fact, it had to be reduced in size (or something) because the plan that dropped it on a test wouldn't escape in time. So when the halved the size of it's yield (or something), the plane literally just made it back in time without being obliterated! Google it. It's fascinating. I actually 'used' this bomb on the 'Nukemap' to see how big it was. It's terrifying.

I'm not sure whether I would survive. 24 miles from a city that was heavily bombed in WW2 including Leeds, Sheffield etc within a radius of 20-40 miles.. We have various military establishments within a 15-40 mile radius (Fylingdales, Harrogate, Catterick, Leeming, Waddington etc).

I have thought about telling DH to head North if the risk became great. Take a 2 week 'holiday' and just see where we end up. Wouldn't use the main roads. Back roads tend to be clearer and you cannot beat a good road map. Google maps and sat-nav will be useless.

ShoesHaveSouls · 29/08/2017 22:41

This came up on my twitter feed a while back.

It's not very optimistic to say the least. I'm in the blast zone of 2 bombs, so not much chance of us surviving in the cellar.

To ask how long it will take to die if we do get nuked

ImperfectTents

"Well this is cheery"

I have been in fits laughing at that.

BannedFromNarnia · 29/08/2017 23:12

As if any one has actually given Trump the correct codes. The military leaders all think he's a twat, they'll have Plans for making sure someone like him isn't able to actually use the missiles.

sticks fingers in ears and refuses to listen to arguments to the contrary

RollingGreenMarble · 29/08/2017 23:24

Oh yay, according to that map I'm in the clear.

Well it was nice knowing you folks. Stay off my land, I'm gonna have to farm it to feed us. Any zombies coming at me in the apocalypse will be shot. The rest of you equally unwelcome.

Don't make me turn all Negan on you (for TWD fans).

Happy surviving.

www.bloomberg.com/politics/graphics/2016-nuclear-weapon-launch/

Above is the 'launch sequence'. Although it says that the Pres has final authority, note that the senior officer in the war room (usually the SoD) must authenticate the command. The war room also prepares the launch order. There's your 'fail safe'. Either of these two entities can stymie a launch long enough to remove an unstable president.

Reality isn't Dr Strangelove or a rogue president firing an order directly to some low level soldier to hit the button or a crazy general riding a nuke to perdition. Reality is that if the war room people (all high ranking military and the SoD) truly feel that a President is off his rocker and that a nuke launch would be a huge mistake, they can refuse to do their part in the launch. And I truly do believe they would refuse. They have just as much to lose as we do when it comes to MAD.

Article 25 Section 4 of our Constitution provides for the removal of an unstable or unfit president. It's a relatively simple process whereby the Vice President and Senior Officials convey to the Speaker of the House and Pres of the Senate that the President is unfit for duty.

www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/amendmentxxv

catgirl I'd be happy to move in and read you the nuclear launch sequence with emphasis on the fail safes and Article 25 every night before bed. But the bed would be a bit crowded with you, me, my DH, and our highly suspicious Dachshund. Not to mention your family!

I live on the US West Coast relatively near two prime targets. For one, I'd be obliterated. For the other I'd be in that nasty 'too sick to live, not sick enough to die' fallout area. I'm not worried one bit.

I'm working hard to get Trump out of office and/or to make him unre-electable. But that's because of what he's doing to my country and my fellow citizens (and immigrants) due to his domestic policies. Not because I'm afraid of nuclear annihilation.

IshipTomHardysohard · 30/08/2017 00:54

My mum always said that if it ever happened just to 'run to the light' younger me didn't get what she meant, now I understand it and if it ever did happen I would take her advice.

RuggerHug · 30/08/2017 06:41

Just to add to the misery available for the morbidly curious here wondering what it would be like if you and DCs survive, another delightful film that deals with this is Testament. Great time for shit yourself with fear films, the 80s...

makeourfuture · 30/08/2017 06:52

a relatively simple process whereby the Vice President

Pence?

Britain still is very influential on the world stage. The best thing we can do is elect peace-minded people. And work towards nuclear disarmament. Resist nationalistic urges.

But these nuclear scenarios are not my biggest concern. I think the biggest threat, in our interconnected world, is conflict over resources. We are not moving away from petroleum fast enough.

Specifically, I worry about financial collapse/shock. If cash machines freeze up (financial institutional collapse), we would be in much the same situation as a nuclear attack. Social order would be strained. It would be worldwide.

NotIdiotProof · 30/08/2017 06:54

Pence is just a right wing douchebag, he isn't an unstable lunatic like Trump.

cafeaulaitpourvous · 30/08/2017 09:54

Any body seen the film 'Deadzone'....

Was the first thing I thought about when Trump got in power.....

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 30/08/2017 10:02

Oo the dead zone looks good. Anyone read the book? Which is better?

CasperGutman · 30/08/2017 10:56

Quite a number of posters are assuming that they will be obliterated because they live near nuclear power station (sometimes not even active ones, but in decommissioning or under construction). I don't think they're right. Nuclear power stations are generally built in locations where any adverse events they might give rise to would have lesser impact. For the same reason, they'd be poor choices as targets.

ikeadyounot · 30/08/2017 11:03

I'm wondering how someone in South Korea would feel reading this thread!! Smile

DoReMeFaBlaBla · 30/08/2017 11:11

The south koreans actually do have reason to be worried.

meltingmarshmallows · 30/08/2017 11:40

I'm just trying to look this situation (raised possibility of nuclear war) in the face rather than pretend it isn't happening.

It isn't happening. It isn't going to happen. And we're under less threat now than our parents / grandparents and what they lived through.

This kind of weird speculation makes for interesting reading but people need to get some perspective.

NameChanger22 · 30/08/2017 12:01

*Any body seen the film 'Deadzone'....

It was exactly what I thought too. A prophetic film about a prophet. I've watched nearly every apocalyptic film ever made, this one is my favourite.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 30/08/2017 13:28

Another pretty good movie around the same time is Miracle Mile. Just in case you haven't had your fill of nuclear annihilation Grin

BlackeyedSusan · 30/08/2017 13:38

I suspect trump would be "vapourised" before he had chance to actually go through with it.

or the war office is going to refuse to comply.
