To still say 'cool'

Carouselfish · 29/08/2017 00:08

in my thirties? I use it from time to time to similarly aged friends, not in formal or professional situations or anything, but have noticed, twice, rather Hmm reactions. I suppose I mean amused or condescending or mildly sarcastic reactions.
Is it because they think I'm too old to say it? Is it because it's old-fashioned? I don't even feel like I'm using slang when I say it because it's very much used in the creative industries my family's in, (though not me); it means on trend or carrying a certain cache, or being a touch rebellious to me. I could use other words, but cool naturally comes out!
I'm not about to stop saying it but...WHY shouldn't I?

Yanbu. I use cool and love it! Grin

MirandaWest · 29/08/2017 00:10

I say cool and am in my 40s. Never noticed anyone giving any sort of reaction really. Even the DC don't seem to mind Grin

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 29/08/2017 00:14

I say cool and I am in my 40s.

LorLorr2 · 29/08/2017 00:15

Are you sure they're reacting to it? x

kingfishergreen · 29/08/2017 00:18

I say 'cool' to acknowledge or agree to something:

"See you at 10!"
"Cool"

But I'd never use it as an adjective:

"That's such a cool shop"

I'd feel awkward and inauthentic doing so.

I'm 39 1/2.

kingfishergreen · 29/08/2017 00:19

That's not to say you can't or shouldn't, you can and should say whatever you fancy, and I almost definitely wouldn't judge (unless you were saying something AWFUL, then I'd judge hard).

Joanofass · 29/08/2017 00:24

I'm also 39 1/2 Grin and I still say it. It might well sound a bit cringey to people younger than me but I guess that's unavoidable as you get older. My dd is one - I'm interested to see if I'm as unintentionally embarrassing to her (as she gets a bit older) as my parents were to me. Although often it was intentional on their parts, the bastards.

Enidblyton1 · 29/08/2017 00:42

Mmmm I know what you mean - I've noticed my friends and I don't use it as much as we used to (I'm mid 30s). But I use 'Fab' a lot more now, which is probably far more outdated!!

thecatfromjapan · 29/08/2017 00:48

My dc groan when I say 'cool'. However, I threatened to use another, more 'down with the kids' term and they swiftly told me I was free to use 'cool' in preference.

I can't even remember the term I threatened to use. It was something I'd heard them saying but I've forgotten it now ...

4691IrradiatedHaggis · 29/08/2017 01:18

I always use cool.
"See you in town at 12?"
"Cool, see you then!"

"I've got a new top."
"Cool, love it!"

I remember a while back when we used to say mint. I don't use mint enough anymore.
"Aw, that's mint, that is!"

Aquamarine1029 · 29/08/2017 04:13

I say "cool", I'm 44, and I'll say it until I'm pushing up daisies.

HappenedForAReisling · 29/08/2017 04:46

I say cool, as in "Wow! That's pretty cool!"

I'm not sure I like it but I can't think of an alternative :D

MrsOverTheRoad · 29/08/2017 04:50

I still pop a "man" on the end of sentences like some hep cat from the 50s! Grin

Im 45!

"Did you see the new episode? Wow what an ending man!"

I'm such a knob. I don't care! And I say cool. It's fine.

Eleventybillionfucks · 29/08/2017 04:57

My DS calls everything Ultra Rad at the moment Hmm it varies by generation i think Cool is the most used

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 29/08/2017 05:22

I use cool and I'm 53!

Horsemad · 29/08/2017 06:38

I always think 'cool' sounds a bit too 'try hard' tbh.

But I am old, so maybe it's me?!

WildCherryBlossom · 29/08/2017 07:09

Switch it to "awesome"! Grin

Cailleach666 · 29/08/2017 07:17

My teens would fall about laughing is I used the word cool.

It's now a word used only by teens or adults hurtling towards middle age.

Fairylea · 29/08/2017 07:21

It's fine Grin

If you want to reply embarrass any teenagers you need to use the words "lit" and "sick". I often text dd to say her dinner is ready saying "Sick dinner here for you. Looking lit". And she will text back "Cringe".

And that's how it's done. Grin

Fairylea · 29/08/2017 07:21

*really not reply

imip · 29/08/2017 07:23

I use it all the time too, and I am 46....

Horsemad · 29/08/2017 07:28

Awesome used by anyone over the age of 12 is soooo naff too!

ILoveMillhousesDad · 29/08/2017 07:33

I still use cool. And in fact just did yesterday when a friend said, meet you at x time.

It's a great word, and obviously looking at most of the PP's, used by many of us late 30's/40's people.

We're all so cool Grin

CaoNiMartacus · 29/08/2017 07:37

I'm channelling the 80s at the moment with "skill" and "mega".

Neutrogena · 29/08/2017 07:48

I like using 'Groovy', as in 'I like your new haircut - it's Groovy'
People look at me in bewilderment.
