To still say 'cool'

Carouselfish · 29/08/2017 00:08

in my thirties? I use it from time to time to similarly aged friends, not in formal or professional situations or anything, but have noticed, twice, rather Hmm reactions. I suppose I mean amused or condescending or mildly sarcastic reactions.
Is it because they think I'm too old to say it? Is it because it's old-fashioned? I don't even feel like I'm using slang when I say it because it's very much used in the creative industries my family's in, (though not me); it means on trend or carrying a certain cache, or being a touch rebellious to me. I could use other words, but cool naturally comes out!
I'm not about to stop saying it but...WHY shouldn't I?

I think any such adjective used by anyone over 25 will inevitably sound wrong to others, especially to younger ears.

My 5yo uses cool though, which I quite like! Maybe it's the word to use for infants and the middle-aged - the inherently uncool.

Igneococcus · 29/08/2017 07:55

I say cool and awesome, and also the occasional "dude" (with exasperation in my voice usually) but I'm not a native English speaker, have lived in several other English-speaking countries before and get mixed up what is acceptable in which country at times and I don't really care if people judge me because of these words.

ButchyRestingFace · 29/08/2017 07:57

I say 'cool' and I'm 114 and 3/4.

Laiste · 29/08/2017 08:24

I notice it when adults say it. I do a fleeting mental double take.

Thinking about it, I guess if you've been saying it all your life then it is just habit - but it sounds a bit try hard to me.

flickertee · 29/08/2017 08:24

Come to Wales and say "lush" instead Grin

AdmiralSirArchibald · 29/08/2017 08:26

I still say cool (aged 35) and I've never noticed anyone minds. I also say wicked and sometimes even wicked cool Grin

kingfishergreen · 29/08/2017 08:51

I still pop a "man" on the end of sentences like some hep cat from the 50s!

I sneak in a 'man' every so often, usually in mild exasperation, for instance dropping a biscuit might be followed by a sigh and an "Oh Man!"

NotAPuffin · 29/08/2017 08:54

I use it, and dude as well. I cringe every time but I can't help it.

NeverTwerkNaked · 29/08/2017 08:57

I do it without thinking, and then laugh as it reminds me of how my mum used to say things were "trendy" and I would want to curl up and die I was so embarrassed Grin

lottiegarbanzo · 29/08/2017 10:10

Ohh, parents saying 'trendy'... and people using 'wally' after the year in which it was fashionable (circa 1983/4)....

I think 'cool' is more classic.

The one I find odd these days is people in their 30s-40s using 'super'. To my ears that's antiquated or sarcastic but seems to have come back in sincere usage.

WildCherryBlossom · 29/08/2017 10:16

"Wally" is out of date? ConfusedBlush

Clearly I am very uncool

CiderwithBuda · 29/08/2017 10:20

I use it. 53 years young and inherently uncool.

Tend to use as others above as in 'see you then' and reply 'ok cool'. Don't tend to say something is or looks cool I don't think.

What absout amazeballs? Much more with it. Try it. And watch your teens cringe! Grin Disclaimer - I have NEVER uttered the word 'amazeballs'.

WildCherryBlossom · 29/08/2017 11:14

"Totes amazeballs"

nina2b · 29/08/2017 11:31

Cool is cool. Wally is uncool.

nina2b · 29/08/2017 11:31

Totes is annoying.

nina2b · 29/08/2017 11:32

Dude is vile when used by very very uncool bores.

nina2b · 29/08/2017 11:33

Man is beyond embarrassing even when it is ironic.

talonofthepithon · 29/08/2017 11:34

I'm 24 and haven't used cool in a decade at least.

Maybe it's an oldies thing? Grin

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 29/08/2017 12:04

I say cool and wicked! I'm 41.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 29/08/2017 12:49

Coolio

And

No problemo

A freind of mine got a bit upset the other day when i signed off with alrighty Grin she missed the coolio

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 29/08/2017 12:50

And i say totes hilair and totes adorbs to wind my children up

Totes fun

borntobequiet · 29/08/2017 12:51

Stopped using the word except as a guide to temperature in about 1976 as considered it outdated. Amazed at its continuing popularity.

PandorasXbox · 29/08/2017 12:51

I write cool quite a lot in texts thinking about it. Don't say it out loud though. Not sure why.

Spudlet · 29/08/2017 12:56

Honestly, what is the point of having children if you can't reduce them to a wobbly heap of jellified cringing with your totes in appropriate use of cool and dudey language? Erm, man?

Admittedly DS is not yet 2 so he is unembarrassable, but I like to consider myself as getting into training for about a decade hence. I didn't get all those bloody stretch marks and tears and stitchs for nothing. Vengeance shall be mine Grin

Spudlet · 29/08/2017 12:59

Egads, the typos Blush
