Just caught my eldest giving my 8 week old Mr whippy

AIBU to panic
My eldest is really good normally and knows the baby can't have food (he is 8). I nipped to the lo and must have been gone a minute and when I came back baby was licking his lips and looked guilty and admitted he let his almost 9 week old brother try a tiny bit of his Mr Whippy ice cream (a bit on the end of a spoon).

I made the mistake of googling and am now terrified the baby might get listeria, I had 3 mc before him so am aware I may be over reacting slightly.

TIA

I don't think there is any need to panic the baby would of had a very small amount, if any actually made it in the mouth.

I wouldn't worry! Just have a calm chat with the eldest about why babies can't have food, only milk

3boys3dogshelp · 27/08/2017 15:33

Well it's not ideal but I think you would be extremely unlucky to have a problem.

ohherewegoagain · 27/08/2017 15:33

I don't think you are BU to panic, but I think (and hope) that it will be harmless. I would talk to your 8yo discussing why exactly the baby can only drink milk at this stage in life.

Namechangetempissue · 27/08/2017 15:34

Don't worry, all will be fine! It was a weeny amount and people used to wean with much worse than that at a much younger age (not saying it is right, just that it was done!).

Floellabumbags · 27/08/2017 15:38

It's not the first time that a "helpful" older brother has given a baby a treat. I expect everything will be OK. Incidentally DS whipped a chocolate brownie off a plate and shoved it in his cakehole before I started weaning him. He survived my baking.

loz12345 · 27/08/2017 15:40

It definitely made it into his mouth unfortunately, I have had a word with ds who knows why he can only have milk ( I made it clear not milk from the fridge lol).

It's just with the bad luck we had when ttc I am stressed about every little thing with him 2 nights of broken sleep due to his inoculations are not helping x

I filled my baby sisters mouth up with sweets when I was two. Mum rushed in to find her gargling dolly mixture ShockBlush.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 27/08/2017 15:41

I'm having fish backs to when my normally extremely sensible father gave my prem DS a 'rub of Tango on his gums as it's so hot out!'Grin

Didn't laugh at the time!

Floellabumbags · 27/08/2017 15:45

Fish backs genius!

oncewasawarrior · 27/08/2017 15:46

On a long car journey my 5 yo fed the 4 month old baby half a slice of chocolate cake grandma had sneakily slipped them "for the journey". Baby had been ebf until then and had no solids. Apparently he sort of "sucked it" in his mouth until it dissolved.

He was fine. Still loves cake....

grandOlejukeofYork · 27/08/2017 15:48

If the ice cream had listeria bacteria in it your 8 year old would also get listeria. If you aren't worried about him when he ate a whole one, you shouldn't worry about a baby who probably didn't even swallow any anyway.

loz12345 · 27/08/2017 15:49

Tango omg I would have gone mad and sweets at least it's not just us I am sure my mum said my grandad rubbed whisky on my gums to get me to sleep (and I was 2 months prem) Hmm

Notevilstepmother · 27/08/2017 15:49

It's not ideal but it will be ok.

Tensecondrule · 27/08/2017 15:50

Popped to the answer the door at dinner time once and returned to find four year old feeding six week old spaghetti bolognese. He will be fine I'm sure!

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/08/2017 15:51

My DS1 fed my DS2 a bugle (crisp type thing) at a similar age and he choked on it. Shock tbf DS1 was only 15 months old at the time and shouldn't have had the bugles either - we think he was trying to get rid of the evidence! After that the crib got taken off the stand and put up high where DS1 couldn't reach.

These things happen OP, I'm sure the baby will be perfectly fine - they are more robust than we give them credit for. In the past we'd be getting jam/whisky on a dummy at that age and also scoffing weetabix or porridge twice a day. Again not advocating it but generations managed to survive on it.

Sparklingbrook · 27/08/2017 15:56

I can understand your worry. But a little bit of me thought it was so sweet that your son was sharing his ice cream, albeit with a baby who wasn't allowed. Blush

gingerbeerd · 27/08/2017 15:56

people have done worse to babies, he'll be ok don't worry OP

TheRealBiscuitAddict · 27/08/2017 15:57

I'm afraid I just Grin Grin At the subject heading. Smile obviously not ideal but what's done is done and as long as it doesn't happen again I wouldn't sweat the small stuff.

Freshprincess · 27/08/2017 15:57

I can understand your concern, but you are overreacting a teeny bit. Not that I'm criticising, my MIL gave my ebf preemie a taste of her tea off a spoon. You'd think she'd given him crack the way I reacted.

ShoesHaveSouls · 27/08/2017 15:58

Baby will be fine Smile I mean, it's obviously not to be encouraged, but don't worry about it.

loz12345 · 27/08/2017 16:01

Thank you I know I am being a bit daft and he was being sweet said it was to make him feel better as he had been sad since his jabs so he avoided a telling off and we just had a chat.

Lol (sorry) at sneaking crisp things

Sparklingbrook · 27/08/2017 16:04

He sounds like a lovely brother.

TheRealBiscuitAddict · 27/08/2017 16:06

OP, my youngest is now fifteen, and sometimes I look back to some of the things which I thought were the end of the world when he was a baby and am Shock at myself. Grin

It's amazing how time changes perspective. If someone had given mine icecream at eight weeks I would likely have hit the roof and then burst through it on my way beyond. Now I just read the subject to DP and said "oops, someone on MN's eldest fed the baby icecream.... eeeek.] grin

Panicking is perfectly normal at this age but you'll look back on this one day and will Grin when you reassure someone when their child does the same. Smile.

ImDoingLaundry · 27/08/2017 16:09

DP mum gave DS a "lick" of BBQ sauce from her Chinese takeaway when he was 6 weeks old. I was livid at the time.

I'm sure your little one will be fine, listeria isn't all that common. Just keep an eye out for high temperature etc and probably have a chat with your DS about how babies need to be a lot bigger before eating grown up food. Sounds very nice that he was sharing though!

AnotherLegoBrick · 27/08/2017 16:10

DS2 first food was a green bean covered in gravy at around the same age - he survived. Still won't eat green beans though...
