Just caught my eldest giving my 8 week old Mr whippy

AIBU to panic
My eldest is really good normally and knows the baby can't have food (he is 8). I nipped to the lo and must have been gone a minute and when I came back baby was licking his lips and looked guilty and admitted he let his almost 9 week old brother try a tiny bit of his Mr Whippy ice cream (a bit on the end of a spoon).

I made the mistake of googling and am now terrified the baby might get listeria, I had 3 mc before him so am aware I may be over reacting slightly.

TIA

I'm sure there's not harm done, so don't worry. I'd be telling the eight year old off though, as you really don't want him trying that trick again.

Iruka · 27/08/2017 16:12

Apparently my brother fed me chocolate buttons when I was 3 days old :). Didn't hurt me but may account for my lifelong addiction

StillMedusa · 27/08/2017 16:20

Found my 3 year old giving the 12 week old a bit of french stick!
She survived :) Honestly kids used to be weaned from 6 weeks when I was tiny and tho we now know it's not ideal a lick of icecream won't do any damage.

Libitina · 27/08/2017 16:20

I tried to feed my sister a chip the day she got out of hospital. I didn't understand why I got told off, I thought I was being nice. I was only 3 though.

SparklyUnicornPoo · 27/08/2017 16:21

Obviously not a great thing to feed a baby but that tiny amount as a one off should be fine. My grandmother insisted on sneaking babies a bit of everything she ate, often off her finger nail, we were all fine.

VeryPunny · 27/08/2017 16:23

DD fed DS hummus on a breadstick at 12 weeks, and I found my mum giving him tiramisu at 20 weeks. No harm done and he has gone on to eat everything.

Mustardnowletsnotbesilly · 27/08/2017 16:25

DM gave DS a spoonful of pub custard at 8 weeks. Bonkers. She was determined he should be on baby rice at 11 weeks. How things change!!!

BamburyFuriou3 · 27/08/2017 16:31

My dd2 but her muddy toe in her brothers mouth at a similar age as apparently it looked like he wanted to suck on something Confused

I hit the roof (internally and to DH) and really panicked but DS was totally fine. I then made sure both DDS knew never to put ANYTHING in a baby's mouth. Anything!
Your baby will also almost certainly also be totally fine, but it's understandable to panic.

Olympiathequeen · 27/08/2017 16:38

Please don't stress. Ice cream for a small baby is totally harmless in this instance. I'm sure your older child thought he was being kind and sharing, so don't worry

Goingtobeawesome · 27/08/2017 16:43

How lovely to see a thread where every poster is being kind and empathetic instead of the sneering comments these types of threads sometimes have.

indulgentberries · 27/08/2017 16:46

I wouldn't worry OP, babies used to start on solid food at 8 weeks.

Sunferra · 27/08/2017 16:51

It is lovely to see a supportive and fun thread. It's amazing we all survived! My mother gave me coffee on a teaspoon at three weeks to 'see if I liked it'. She also started my much younger brother soft boiled eggs at three weeks. Maybe the novelty of having a newborn wore off quickly!

Singingtherapy · 27/08/2017 16:52

Health visitor here. Don't worry, obviously not ideal but there's nothing in Mr whippy that would do any harm to a baby. He probably loved it!

Fitzsimmons · 27/08/2017 16:55

DD had her first taste of chocolate aged 8 weeks, when at a toddler and baby group a toddler put his melted chocolate coated fingers in her mouth. She was fine. Loves chocolate now though Grin

loz12345 · 27/08/2017 16:58

I agree I was expecting lots of negative posts too, I weaned my eldest on dr orders at 4 mnt as he wasn't gaining weight so I knew it is ok from them I just hope he doesn't end up loving ice cream now 😂

One of mines first taste of proper food was marmite, care of my stupid Dad...

GnomeDePlume · 27/08/2017 17:13

DD1 gave DS a bite of her chocolate muffin at similar age. I came back into the room to find DS with chocolate all round his mouth looking quite content!

DS is now 18 and is still quite partial to a chocolate muffin!

WashBasketsAreUs · 27/08/2017 17:14

My sister shoved half an oxo cube in my mouth when I was 6 weeks old. I'm still here, and I love oxo cubes!

FruitCider · 27/08/2017 17:20

My FIL shoved a finger covered in jam into my baby's mouth at 10 weeks old and I hit the roof, I had failed to breastfeed so was EPing as I worried about my baby not having a virgin gut. At that moment I thought my whole world had collapsed. My child is now about to turn 5, still eats strawberry jam, and knows grandad provides good tasting food Grin

It will be fine x

Pigface1 · 27/08/2017 17:20

OP, I think the listeria risk is largely posed by unpasteurised milk products - like blue cheese and other soft cheeses - and obviously by uncooked meats. Mr Whippy is an ice cream for kids - it will have been pasteurised and processed within an inch of its life. I really wouldn't worry.

biscuitmillionaire · 27/08/2017 17:31

I seem to remember there was a report about people getting food poisoning from ice cream due to vendors who would keep the scoop in a container of water, which would then get milk in it and would sit getting warm on the counter. I think that might be what OP has read about online. So she's not just panicking about weaning and sugar etc. However, Mr Whippy isn't served with a scoop so all should be fine. (And I think ice cream sellers are now aware of this potential risk).

AnneEyhtMeyer · 27/08/2017 17:34

Mr Whippy was DD's first food too - she stole it herself while I was distracted by grabbing a handful from my cone and shoving it in her mouth at 12 weeks.

Her next food was Doritos, stolen from my plate in a pub.

She has suffered no ill effects.

Screwinthetuna · 27/08/2017 17:37

Don't worry OP, baby will be fine. Some mothers literally poo in the birthing pool and baby comes out into it.
When DS was about 8 weeks, I let a family friend hold him at a party. Went to get some food and found her eating prawns and peanuts and then sticking her finger into his mouth for him to suck. Prawns and friggin peanuts.
I also had that pfb smugness that DS's first food at 5 months was a taste of organic carrot. DH then said, 'no it wasn't, I took him to McDonald's with me when he was 4 months and he ate chips.' Grin

Mammyloveswine · 28/08/2017 15:02

My mum held haribos to my then 12 week old DS for him to kick, saying "he loves it! Look!" I told her he would lick the floor and to never attempt to give my son bloody haribo again! Honest to god!

I also made my dad a cuppa whilst he had DS at 5 months on his knee...heard DS making "mmmmm" noises... he was only greedily devouring a bloody magnum!! Obviously loved it (who wouldn't?) but not my weaning food of choice! 🙈

Aaviiii · 28/08/2017 15:44

I found 19 yr old DN feeding my 6 week DS3 old cola bottles because "he looked like he wanted it"
Her dad used to feed DS1the most appalling things. By 6 months DS1 had had coke, crisps, chocolate, tea and generally anything else Bil was eating. I refused to let him see Ds1 unless I was present. And then the shit hit the fan when he put a lit cigarette in my one yr old's mouth to wind me up.
