To not understand why you would have a "bar" in your house?!

Can someone enlighten me as to the point of having a bar in your house? They look incredibly tacky to me and I genuinely don't get the point of them. Why not just store alcohol somewhere and have an entertaining space instead?

Well, horses for courses I suppose. They were a big thing in the late fifties and sixties, perhaps they were supposed to suggest sophistication and wealth. But no, I agree they are tacky, and with houses seemingly getting smaller, I don't know how one would fit such a non essential item in. They are usually pretty ugly lumps of furniture too. However i have got a wine cooler fridge thingy (well stocked), so perhaps that is the modern equivalent!

Laiste · 26/08/2017 14:21

I agree OP. But i guess if you have a big house and host a lot of big parties then a bar is less odd.

The squashed up little bars in your average terraced house always look very tacky. My dad always had a 'drinks cabinet' and one of those hostess trollys loaded up with bottles to wheel about at xmas. That was late 70s Grin

krummymummy · 26/08/2017 14:25

Shits and giggles?

FallingOrbit · 26/08/2017 14:27

If you have the space, why not? To each their own.

Mine's a lager please guvnor.

geekone · 26/08/2017 14:27

Retro or still there from the 70s? Loving it if is ironic retro

BackforGood · 26/08/2017 14:29

Well, I haven't got one, but, if you have the space it's just the same as having a 'music room' or 'play room' or 'sewing room' or 'home office' or 'man cave' surely ? You set up your house (within the confines of space) to suit your lifestyle at the time.
If you are entertaining in one living space, I can see it makes sense to keep the wherewithal in that space rather than having to go to another room when you need a refill.
It was very much a late 60s / 1970s fashion, so is probably due a revival.

StarlightExpress5 · 26/08/2017 14:29

It was my dads dream to have a bar a la only fools and horses, but my mum forbade it.

BarbarianMum · 26/08/2017 14:29

Nostalgia for the 1970s?

LottieDoubtie · 26/08/2017 14:29

I'd only consider one if I had the kind of house where I was thinking of what to do with each room.

And even then I'd have a playroom, two living rooms, a library and probably a craft room first 😂

MistressDeeCee · 26/08/2017 14:31

Why do you need to understand? You likely have things in your house that someone wouldn't like. Horses for courses. I don't get why alcohol can't be in an "entertaining space" (what is that., exactly..? ) either. The bar is where it is as the person wants it there I suppose. I quite like the idea of one. Tack n retro....

SerfTerf · 26/08/2017 14:33

Why have any non-necessary thing at all?

Taste, function, class, lifestyle.

It's all just preference.

Floellabumbags · 26/08/2017 14:34

In our twenties (pre kids) we had a bar in our house. It was brilliant.

lifeinthecountry · 26/08/2017 14:39

YANBU - even if I had loads of extra, unused rooms, I wouldn't turn one of them into a bar. Agree, it's tacky. I suppose if people entertain a lot, it probably makes more sense (although I've yet to see it done in a non-tacky way.) A wine cellar is okay though.

dingdongdigeridoo · 26/08/2017 14:43

I'd have one if I didn't live in a tiny house! I love a good cocktail and rarely get a night out so I think it'd be fun.

It's a good place to store your booze, glasses etc too.

formerbabe · 26/08/2017 14:43

Why have one? So you don't need to go out! Duh! It must be like a night out in your own home but no need to get a taxi back. Amazing...I want one!

Orangebird69 · 26/08/2017 14:44

Living in a 'dry' country, they were a necessity.. and makes life much easier when having parties.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/08/2017 14:45

My DM and DF have one from the 70s. It's solid wood, set in an alcove and really beautiful. As opposed to my glasses cupboard that has no room, is annoying and I hate.

Ttbb · 26/08/2017 14:49

Too much money. Too little taste.

brasty · 26/08/2017 14:49

Why have a music room? Why not just put your instruments away, and get them out when you play?
Same principle really. Except bars are seen as lower class and music rooms as middle class.

morningconstitutional2017 · 26/08/2017 14:50

It's just personal taste, isn't it? I wouldn't have one myself even if I had the space and I don't drink enough even to warrant a special cabinet but each to their own.

I suppose if you were rich and famous and liked that sort of thing you get a pub built in your extensive grounds, wouldn't you?

Floellabumbags · 26/08/2017 14:51

Too much money. Too little taste

I'm sure your house is perfect.

Oblomov17 · 26/08/2017 14:54

Why are you all so negative? I think it sounds fabulous. Not necessarily tacky.
If you went to a posh house, they may well have an extensive wine collection. Is that too MC for you? Why not extend that to a bar.
Cocktails, mojito's, gin and tonic GinGinGin- here I come!!

brasty · 26/08/2017 14:57

Big houses often have wine cellars. But that is acceptable.
This is about class really.

Natsku · 26/08/2017 14:57

When we renovate the heating system in our house and put radiators in the basement I am definitely going to have a really tacky retro bar in the music room down there!

SerfTerf · 26/08/2017 14:59

The one in High Society was very nice Smile
