To think 9st 7lbs isn't underweight?

OverTheHammer · 26/08/2017 10:16

I want to set my new weight goal to 9st 7lbs. I currently weigh 10st 1lbs so it's not that far from what I am now and when I look in the mirror, I still see a fat, flabby mess.

My friend thinks 9st 7lbs would make me underweight but I don't see how it could do when I still look fat at my current weight which is only half a stone more!

I'm 5ft 9in.

I think it's too light for your height. But you are within NHS BMI at 19.6

notanotherNC · 26/08/2017 10:20

No you would still have a healthy bmi. Your friend is just jealous as you are tall and slim. Is she short and fat by any chance?

Orangebird69 · 26/08/2017 10:21

Sounds fine to me!

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 26/08/2017 10:22

I'm 5' 11" and a BMI of 19 would make me look anorexic. I look and feel much better at around 23 which is mid range. But that's me, and I'm not you. Only you know what you're comfortable with.

watchingthedetectives · 26/08/2017 10:23

5ft 8in here and usually about 9 stone ten but fluctuates and look OK at 9 and a half. When i was younger I was 8.5 to 9 stone. If I was that weight now I would look very skinny (but wasn't really then)

I think it depends on your build, tone, amount of muscle etc. My friend is similar height and a stone heavier and looks great so I don't think its one rule for all

OverTheHammer · 26/08/2017 10:23

No she's lovely to be honest, never says a bad word about anyone and she's literally the only person I have ever met who I can't find a negative about. She's just worried that I'm going to become ill but I disagree with her.

She's the same height as me and used to be the same weight (we were both always around 11st) but then I lost a lot of weight. She's just had a baby but will be coming to gym with me as soon as she gets the all clear. I can guarantee she's not jealous! She's beautiful and has no reason to be jealous of anyone

It's slim, but not underweight.

Wouldn't have been considered "underweight" 20+ years ago, but our perception of "normal" has changed substantially.

CarrieErbag · 26/08/2017 10:24

It would make you look very slim, but I suppose it's what you are used to?
I can't see that at 5ft 9 and 10 stone you could look like a flabby mess though.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 26/08/2017 10:24

Not underweight but you describe yourself as a fat flabby mess at just over half a stone more than you want to be. At your height I can't believe you are a fat flabby mess.

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 26/08/2017 10:25

What worries me is you see 8lbs a 'a fat flabby mess'

I can guarantee that 8lb isn't going to make you fat and flabby.

haveacupoftea · 26/08/2017 10:25

I think there's more to this and the friend has picked up on it tbh.

MineKraftCheese · 26/08/2017 10:26

Do you have small boobs? I do and I'm always supposedly underweight when it comes to BMI but I'm not, I just don't have boobs.

Trills · 26/08/2017 10:26

It depends on your build.

People who are the same weight and height can LOOK very different - as evidenced by any thread asking "If you are 5'6 and wear a size 10 what do you weigh?".

But most people don't seem to realise this, they think that there is a "correct" weight and height to be and don't consider how much it can vary.

I am 5'7 and the last time I was 9 stone 7 my dad asked me if I was ill, because I was too skinny. (up til then he's only ever called me things like "thunder thighs").

Trills · 26/08/2017 10:27

I still see a fat, flabby mess.

This is obviously a problem with your perception rather than a problem with your actual body, isn't it?

Ecureuil · 26/08/2017 10:31

I think she's probably worried about your perception of yourself. What happens if you get to 9st 7lbs and still see a 'fat, flabby mess'? Will you lose more?

OverTheHammer · 26/08/2017 10:32

My original target when I was 11st was 10st 7lbs. I got there and wasn't happy with what I saw so changed my goal to 10st. Now I'm nearly there and still not happy so think 9st 7lbs would take me to the bottom of my healthy BMI range so I couldn't argue with that. I think friend thinks I'll get there and then change the goal posts again.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 26/08/2017 10:34

It's not underweight. I'm 9'0-9'5 at 5'8 and look perfectly normal.

Trills · 26/08/2017 10:34

I stick by my statement that two people of the same height can have quite different "best" weights.

But I can very much see why your friend is worried, based on your update.

It sounds as if you need to spend some time focusing on changing your thoughts, not just changing your body.

PurpleDaisies · 26/08/2017 10:35

From personal experience, once you hit 9st7 you'll decide that's not thin enough and you'll keep going. There's no way you're a flabby mess at your current weight. You need to address how you thing of your body before you tip into an eating disorder.

alisonyawn · 26/08/2017 10:35

Personally I think BMI is absolute bullshit. I'm a size 14 and my BMI puts me in the morbidly obese column.
If you want to lose that as it'll make you feel better then go for it. But please don't call yourself a "fat, flabby mess".
If at your height and weight you believe that, then you have body dysmorphia and need to see someone.

Trills · 26/08/2017 10:37

BMI is not bullshit. BMI is a population measure, and it is good at measuring what it was designed to measure. It is often mis-applied, but that's not the same as being bullshit.

Squeegle · 26/08/2017 10:38

I'm 5ft 8 and 11 stone ish. And I am a bit flabby 😀. I think if you're 10 stone that's should be ok, you're starting to get a big thin after that- but depends on your age and build. I was always around 9 and a half stone when I was under 25. Starting getting a little plumper at 30, and am a little too plump at 50.

OverTheHammer · 26/08/2017 10:39

It's not just how I look, I can literally grab handfuls of flab around my hips and stomach! It's definately there, I'm not imagining it 😁

cashmerecardigans · 26/08/2017 10:39

Are you me? Grin. I am the same height and weight and have a similar flabby tummy. I was unwell a few years ago and went down to 9'4 and to be honest did look a bit gaunt in the face, but 9'7 is fine for me.

OverTheHammer · 26/08/2017 10:39

I'm 36 btw
