To be fed up of Instamums

Hmmmmx100 · 25/08/2017 22:56

I followed a few of the more well-known Instamums but got weary of the constant daily barrage of brand endorsements. I can't relate to people on £100k a year in Farrow & Ball houses. I just can't. So I had to unfollow em all, every one. AIBU to feel a bit miffed that these people are using the idea of sisterhood to make money? They're not our friends, they're just there to sell us stuff that we probably don't need anyway.

Thanks elspeth!

WipsGlitter · 28/08/2017 08:38

Who's the Highgate one?

langkaw · 28/08/2017 08:45

I love 'does my bum look 40' I find her hilarious in stories. All gleeful/manic/at the end of her tether in a really funny way.

ElspethFlashman · 28/08/2017 08:49

Yes her rants are hilarious.

Mothervulva · 28/08/2017 08:56

Highgate one is Courtney Adamo.

BabsGanoush · 28/08/2017 09:07

Hold on, I only have an Insta account because my teens gave me one.

I've looked at some of these. What is the appeal? A few perfect photos, a caption, and a stream of adoring responses? Is that it?

Regarding MOD, is it just photos of her in an M&S dress against an interesting wall / arms up facing backwards?

balletvalet · 28/08/2017 09:08

Thanks @tealstar I shall take a look!

langkaw · 28/08/2017 09:25

Yes it's whimsical/hilarious/paid for moments. I think the stream of adoring responses must really affect your ego and sense of self. They are constantly being told how hilarious/amazing/cute they are by their followers and it must really make you believe it, hence the arrogance of a few of them.

yummycake123 · 28/08/2017 10:05

Langkaw That's it...that's how I see it too.

simpaticasimpatica · 28/08/2017 11:13

I just read up on Courtney Adamo's family wealth.

Jeezo. Why is she on Instagram flogging tampons and other stuff when she is literally rolling in it?

Pouffealouffe · 28/08/2017 11:36

@simpaticasimpatica ooh really? Where did you find this? I had a quick Google but couldn't find much about her family background except that she grew up on a tulip farm

simpaticasimpatica · 28/08/2017 11:58

She is part of the Scripps family who are a publishing dynasty. Old money you might say. They have a private island in the San Juan Islands. I think the family was valued at $7.5 billion.

TealStar · 28/08/2017 12:57

I think it's symptomatic of the You Tube generation where unless you have an online presence you are nothing. It's not about the money; that is just a by-product to many. If you're seen to be sponsored it brings its own cachet. Obviously most of their followers aren't as discerning as the posters on this thread!

ElspethFlashman · 28/08/2017 16:56

Just added littlewoodlife. Her husband's a bit of alright, isn't he? Blush

Caprianna · 28/08/2017 18:00

Just had a look at some of these Instamamas. Are they professional photographers? That is unfortunately not what my holiday photos look like. How on earth do they get their kids to pose like that?

bananafish81 · 28/08/2017 18:09

Twas ever thus however

You read a magazine and the editorial is full of brand mentions, that aren't signposted as ads, but as products the writer of that piece recommends. Everyone knows the writers are sent the products and sent on jollies by the brands, no one really believes every product recommended in a magazine article is completely devoid of commercial influence?

You read a magazine expecting a presentation of an aspirational lifestyle

Instagram is just this via a different platform. It's commercially funded lifestyle editorial, but independently published via a platform we can all use

bananafish81 · 28/08/2017 18:11

*instagram bloggers that should say. Instagram is a platform most of us use to showcase a better version of our real lives

An instamum is publishing her own brand on instagram. Publishers are commercially funded - the editorial as well as the advertising space

Tralalalalz · 28/08/2017 18:42

I had never even heard of any of these people and have never followed any, I'm missing out but I do know MOD's mum and she's possibly the nicest lady I've ever met and my inspiration for how I want to be when I'm a grandma. I had no idea MOD was an Instagram star, I just knew of her through her mum when she was a newly qualified midwife.

Pumpkinnose · 28/08/2017 20:01

Can anyone recommend some proper yummy mummy ones - beautiful houses/outings etc. Preferably south east or London based? I like the inspiration/pretty pictures I don't want a feed full of people complaining!

Mothervulva · 28/08/2017 20:11

instagram.com/pippavosper

Is pretty 'yummy mummy'.

Dozyoldtwonk · 28/08/2017 20:11

Life at the Littlewood & Blossoming Birds both have beautiful homes. They're both NI based.

Instagram is a filtered, highly edited, highlight reel. I enjoy scrolling through and I've pinched taken a lot of ideas and inspiration for home decor & such from the people I follow. Some DC stuff also - activities, products. So yes, I've bought products as a result. But as previous posters have said, it's a commercial vehicle much like a magazine is - just a very different medium. It is not representative of someone's actual day to day reality, and if it is I WANT TO BE THEM! Grin

unicornsandroses · 28/08/2017 20:46

I really like littlewoodlife. I'd like to pretend that my house will look like that and I will be well groomed when my three kids are older.

Gettingstuffdoneinheels is a good one for home, countryside stuff but grown up kids.

Huntersandheels for sickly lovely home and well presented yummy mummy and kids

Cara Suthers is an instamum i like and think has a good sense of humour

TeachesOfPeaches · 28/08/2017 20:48

I don't follow them but another person on my Facebook likes a lot of these posts. Everyday that Giovanna would pop up and one day she posted about how she just adores her new sofa from sofaworld.com and what amazing service she received along with photo of the sofa.

I commentated and asked if it was an ad but she didn't reply. Her followers had a go at me though and said they couldn't believe I would think that and that of course it wasn't an ad.

Also that part time mummy one posts WAY too much personal information on her children. Something I think they will all grow to regret. #kids4cash

TeachesOfPeaches · 28/08/2017 20:50

Oh Christ and Constance Hall as well - the human embodiment of a slummy mummy barking on about being a queen and how much she loves her new man. Hmm
