To wonder if Labour are trying to scapegoat its politicians who speak out against Rotherham/child grooming gangs?

First Sarah Champion resigned as Shadow Equalities Minister after she wrote an article for the Sun critical of the Rotherham child abuse gang and now a Labour Councillor, Amina Lone, has been deselected after she too was critical of the gangs and supported Sarah Champion.

It all seems a bit sinister and not very supportive of women.

South Yorkshire Police should have been disbanded a long time ago. Almost all picket line violence was in South Yorkshire, then there was Hillsborough and the disgraceful cover-up, and then the Rotherham scandal.

As for the Labour party, I agree with an earlier poster that it is a group within the party, not everyone. There are some decent people within the Labour party- not far from me Stella Creasy, for example.

HalfShellHero · 25/08/2017 20:11

Yes Trebus, i bet a large percentage are ex pit villages with high levels of socioeconomic deprivation

Lloyd45 · 25/08/2017 20:14

I can't bring myself to vote Labour after this, I know it's still going on which is awful but at least it's being talked about now and not hidden 😞So sad for those girls

MrsTrebus · 25/08/2017 20:18

Lloyd - is it? I think it is still being ignored

Half shelf - Economically deprived yes but not villages Sad

HalfShellHero · 25/08/2017 20:32

Babies in SC going missing? Good god very under reported then i didnt even know. Sad

MrsTrebus · 25/08/2017 20:36

DJ that article is so depressing. How can this be happening in 2017.

Theresnonamesleft · 25/08/2017 20:46

Why Is anyone surprised that mp's and she's who speak out about the abuse are sacked.

One was made a children's minister. prior to this she held a position of trust where she denied any abuse had taken place. Huge cover up. Social works sacked. Care home workers charged wrongfully for speaking out.

MargaretTwatyer · 25/08/2017 20:52

White working class women are treat dreadfully by society as a whole classism misogyny and predjudice from ethnic communities as a whole..

SYP in particular are dreadful for this. There was a report out yesterday about how Ian Watkins could have been caught four years earlier if they'd listened to reports from Joanne Mjadzelics who was sexually involved with him. Now Mjadzelics is a bit of an unpleasant individual with a very unsavoury past who appears to have made and withdrawn reports manipulatively in order to blackmail Watkins into continuing their relationship. But as the investigation said yesterday, SYP wasn't willing to do anything until they had the 'perfect' witness. Which is generally someone who is a respectable middle class white person or a member of the 'right' minority.

But abusers target those who are vulnerable and have MH issues and substance abuse problems or unstable lives. So they are basically ruling out all the most likely reporters of these crimes. White working class women are viewed as Jeremy Kyle fodder beneath contempt and the authors of their own downfall when they are abused. It's very similar to the way Stephen Lawrence's murder was dismissed as 'well black people are always getting stabbed because they're up to no good'. It has to change.

I went to the same college as Stephen and knew him a little and he really was lovely and I'm so glad things have changed so that nobody can ever be treated the way he and his family were. But I'm also friends with a family whose child was a Rotherham victim and I have no confidence that other families and young women won't go through the same again.

noeffingidea · 25/08/2017 21:05

Ian Watkins abusing children was openly discussed on a fan forum, years before he was arrested. The women who stood trial with him were named as well. So this was common knowledge. I found this out after his trial, it took 5 minutes googling.

derxa · 25/08/2017 21:09

Flowers Mrs Trebus

HalfShellHero · 25/08/2017 22:09

Oh god Ian Watkins what a monster ...yes what she an escort ?

Boulshired · 25/08/2017 22:11

But this is so much bigger than SYP, whilst their failing should be heavily dealt with, this has happened and unfortunately still happening nationwide.

Armadillostoes · 25/08/2017 22:41

It concerns me that this scandal hasn't received more national press attention. How many people have to suffer before this is finally adequately addressed?

RedHelenB · 25/08/2017 23:27

I think what was written in the Sun did come across as racist.
