Used half a bottle of Dettol to clean the hallway carpet after our elderly cat didn't make it to her litter tray
Tried everything first, steam cleaned, bicarbonate of soda, neutraliser and then decided to rip up the underlay and replace that and then Dettol the carpet.
The smell was very strong even after steaming ahain and leaving all windows open for the whole day.
The day after I began coughing, having chest pains and feeling generally really crap.
Thought chest infection so went to the doctor who said must be viral as chest clear but have made the mistake of googling and some websites indicate that inhaling Dettol ( obviously this isn't from the bottle as intentional! But from the carpet smell ) can cause issues such as chest pains, coughing and breathlessness which I now have all 3!

Suppose it's possible, like some kind of reaction to the chemical. Half a bottle does seem overkill.

Hopefully, the symptoms should pass in a day or 2.

You're not supposed to use disinfectants that go "cloudy" in the water (which Dettol does) around cats anyway (it's toxic to them).

If that were the case then it would have been a symptom your gran and mum also experienced right, as Dettol was used in bath water and to mop floors until recently.

I personally have never heard of that side effect and I used to clean our gutters out with a whole bottle of dettol as a kid. You've just got a bad cold - get to bed, drink loads of fluids, and you'll get better eventually.

I'd get some enzyme cleaner to have on hand if it happens again. I use the total control one.

LivingInMidnight · 25/08/2017 11:21

For cat wee obviously not your illness! Blush

Sorry you're not feeling well. You're not supposed to use Dettol around cats and dogs, I think, so it's probably not that great for humans either.

Felicitychipmunkx · 25/08/2017 11:35

I've never heard you're not meant to use it around animals it doesn't say that on the bottle! Just to keep away from children
I guess that's as animals could lick it but I wonder if you ingest the chemical accidentally it could cause this.
I'm coughing up really dark brown phlegm but doctor said chest sounds clear!

could also be that the cleaning and dampness released mould spores into the air.

Felicitychipmunkx · 25/08/2017 15:41

Not sure as the carpet is fairly new

Biological wash powder is your friend for cat wees. One of ours took a liking to my rug and the only thing that got the smell out was a strong mix of bio wash powder and hot water, soaked on the rug then blotted dry. The devils own cat hasn't been near the spot since.

Felicitychipmunkx · 25/08/2017 18:07

Thanks I just am worried as the symptoms are what it says can happen if ingested, but I'm not sure if this counts as " ingested "
