To think DD may be gifted?

DD has always been developmentally fast but tonight she has shocked me.

DD is 12 months old and has sat on the floor and emptied a tin of 25 sharpies. She then proceeds to put all the sharpies back in the tin but deliberately putting them colour lid up. She's turning the pens in her hand the right way up and when she puts one upside down, she pulls it out and puts it the right way up.

I'm Shock

Sharpies, you say?

Are you sure you're not describing a certain 71 year old?

Roundandroundtheapartment · 24/08/2017 19:29

My dd is about the same age and can do the same things
I don't think your child is gifted but just quite observant and obviously has good fine motor skills, it IS amazing what they can do though and I'm often surprised at how clever dd (and my older ds) is.
Children are like sponges and see/learn a lot more than we give them credit for.

Jux · 24/08/2017 19:32

My aunt always said that one of her sons was talking in complete sentences when he was 6 months old. If true, I expect he would have been classified as gifted (if they had bothered doing such things back then). Didn't do him much good, mind.

Your baby is beautiful and clever and immensely talented. Have no doubt about that, and celebrate it with her, always make sure she knows how special she is; seriously, children need to know that.

Just remember when you're chatting to other mums that their babies are beautiful and clever and immensely talented too.

Benedikte2 · 24/08/2017 19:33

OP your DD sounds delightful and is more advanced with her motor skills than many her age. Try to supply her with toys/objects which will give her scope to develop further -- especially special awareness. Have you seen the BBC programme "No more girls, no more boys" Food for thought when it comes to developmental toys.
You're doing great. Enjoy your DD.

Luttrell · 24/08/2017 19:33

Fucking hell.

STRONGandSTABLE · 24/08/2017 19:33

My guess is that your DD is a bright cookie. But as for gifted? That remains to be seen. What I have learned in my 21 years as a mum is that however amazing your child is there will always be another child who is faster, better, cleverer. So don't get hung up on her amazingness - enjoy it with those around her who love her as much as you. Bless her.

JemmyBloocher · 24/08/2017 19:35

Of my five, my youngest daughter was like this, also fully toilet trained at one, night and day and chatted up a storm. We have first birthday video footage of clear chat that our others couldn't do til much older. She's now five. She's perfectly normal. Yours sounds perfectly normal. And that is fine. Kids develop different things at different speeds. You'll find when she starts nursery she's faster than some and slower than others. Believe me you don't want a genius in the family. They're incredibly hard work.

Xeneth88 · 24/08/2017 19:35

Every kid I know could do those things at that age. We've all been there though OP. I'm sure your little one is wonderful and it really would never matter if, at that age, she is gifted. She sounds normal to me but enjoy this lovely time where she grows so quickly.

SideOrderofSprouts · 24/08/2017 19:35

I would necessarily say gifted. Ds was doing most of that around the same age

Mainly I just thought he was being a little shit.

SideOrderofSprouts · 24/08/2017 19:36

*wouldnt.

wonderingsoul · 24/08/2017 19:36

She may not be gifted.. (its hard to tell at 12 months) but she is well a head off her developmental goals.

Whats she like with puzzles?

Witchend · 24/08/2017 19:36

You know Rymans won't sell Sharpies to under 16s. They're restricted items.

Huffletuff · 24/08/2017 19:37

Is this a serious post?

Lalalax3 · 24/08/2017 19:38

My kid couldn't do any of that at age 1. But at age v v v nearly 3 he can do do simple sums and read nearly 50 words. So he's pretty bright. Still refuses to shit anywhere but in his pants though. It's all relative!

wonderingsoul · 24/08/2017 19:39

Also dont believe most 1 year olds can put pens the right way up .. that sounds alot of understanding and purposely doing something.
Also to get more then one or two pens in a tin
Also amount amount of focus and attention shed be using.

I work in a nursery and we dont have or have ever had a 1 year old who could do that.

ADishBestEatenCold · 24/08/2017 19:39

"Haha! It's not the only thing, there are other examples"

She sounds lovely, OP.

You are entering such a fun stage with her! Enjoy every moment ... it really does pass so quickly! Smile

MummyJess123 · 24/08/2017 19:40

That's cute. My DD wrote her first peer reviewed paper on the impact of climate change on indigenous tribal living in the Democratic Republic of Congo at 12 months..

...In Spanish

shivermytimbers · 24/08/2017 19:41

My 1 year old has managed to throw his duck out of the bath and have it land in the toilet Grin

Calvinlookingforhobbs · 24/08/2017 19:42

Filling and emptying is a schema. Look that up.

shiver id be proud of that to tbh... then asknem to do it again...

didyoureally · 24/08/2017 19:43

I think she sounds very bright but maybe best not to dwell on her being gifted - if she is, time will tell.

LivingInMidnight · 24/08/2017 19:43

I think you need to move the sharpies and easy access batteries somewhere else tbh.

bungaloid · 24/08/2017 19:44

90% of parents think their child is above average.
