To think DD may be gifted?

DD has always been developmentally fast but tonight she has shocked me.

DD is 12 months old and has sat on the floor and emptied a tin of 25 sharpies. She then proceeds to put all the sharpies back in the tin but deliberately putting them colour lid up. She's turning the pens in her hand the right way up and when she puts one upside down, she pulls it out and puts it the right way up.

I'm Shock

Why is a 1 year old allowed to play with Sharpies?

Foxtrot92 · 24/08/2017 19:11

Haha! It's not the only thing, there are other examples;

  • She can take off the back of the remotes (annoyingly)
  • She holds pens/pencils/crayons with the a tripod grasp and scribbles away
  • She sits at a little table in a chair to eat her food using fork
  • She can do match jigsaws
  • She pushes a small chair to the windowsill to climb so she can reach things up there

haha.

Great post!

Oh be nice people.

OP, children are utterly amazing. What they can achieve so little, how much they learn and memorise is unbelievable, you will be amazed for years. You will also be climbing the wall in frustration when they fail to do the most basic task or follow the easiest instruction. They can be 2 opposite at once, it's hard.

I wouldn't worry about a child being gifted or not so early, but that's just me!

Gorgosparta · 24/08/2017 19:15

Op honestly, does it matter at this point.

My dd could hold a conversation at 18 months. Draw circles way before expected, read way before expected.

Ds was much later with anything.
Ds is now 7 and dd is 13.

When you compare where ds was in year 2 and where ds is, there is no real difference.

Dd just did stuff earlier. My mum was obsessed that dd was gifted and wanted to pay for tutors etc. I wanted her to be a kid. If she turned out to be gifted, she would be.

Gorgosparta · 24/08/2017 19:17

Oh and yes she will get to an age where she expects you to get up and go oass hee something that is less than a foot away from her.

Fun times.

SpareChangeDownTheSofa · 24/08/2017 19:17

Can she also change batteries all by herself? Wink

UrsulaPandress · 24/08/2017 19:17

When did sharpies come into existence?

Mellington · 24/08/2017 19:18

Definitely, mines 3 and still shits in his pants.

SnowiestMountain · 24/08/2017 19:18

Phyllis is that you?! Grin

Children learn at different stages, some can do more then others at an early stage, especially girls, they're usually more advanced then boys in the first few years.

Only when she goes to school can you tell if she's gifted.

Haudyerwheesht · 24/08/2017 19:19

OP honestly she sounds normal and that's fine. My ds was miles ahead with everything but he's 10 now and just perfectly average. Dd was behind on everything and guess what? She's 7 now and also perfectly average.

LostInShoebiz · 24/08/2017 19:20

This!

INFP · 24/08/2017 19:20

Haha Xpost!!!!

LostInShoebiz · 24/08/2017 19:21

Sorry, too slow. Meant I thought it was Phyllis. No one has heard from her in a while. Was the messiah so advanced he cancelled Fajita Friday and locked her in their no doubt massive cellar?

Pantryboy · 24/08/2017 19:21

yes dear Hmm

EnglandKeepMyBones · 24/08/2017 19:21

Even with your update, your child sounds relatively normal OP. That's not to say they aren't gifted, but none of what you're writing puts them in a camp beyond 'normal range'.

Newtssuitcase · 24/08/2017 19:22

I'm sure she's very clever. Ignore the meanness and enjoy her but really it sounds pretty normal.

FizzyGreenWater · 24/08/2017 19:22

Whoa she is like a crow in baby form

SparklingBollox · 24/08/2017 19:23

Awww.
It is lovely isn't it, when you see them develop and grow.
My dts at the age of 4 tried to make a makeshift go cart out of a storage box, with sellotaped skateboards on the bottom. Luckily I caught them before they went down the stairs on them.
Still, a clever idea and I was very impressed with them.

endehors · 24/08/2017 19:24

Yes, definitely gifted! Grin

NormaDesmondsEyebrows · 24/08/2017 19:25

Oh don't be mean, you 'orrible lot. We've all been there.

Op, she sounds lovely and bright. Enjoy her. She may end up being gifted, or she may not. But yes, what she's doing is above average for 12 months, she's a little trouper.

Bluntness100 · 24/08/2017 19:25

She holds pens/pencils/crayons with the a tripod grasp and scribbles away

Are you saying your 12 month old can hold a pencil correctly? And scribble with it? Normally children can't do this until they are three or four as their muscles are not developed in their fingers. It's not about intelligence simply they physically cannot.

Using utensils to feed at this age is normal, although some kids later, as is walking, I walked at nine months, and could climb, the only thing that uou have posted that is developmentally abnormal , and ill add hugely som is the fact your child has muscles so developed in her fingers she can hold a pencil or crayon in a tripod grasp.

CrunchieFeeling · 24/08/2017 19:25

Ok - there are several forms of giftedness. High achieving academically is the most well known but there are other groups who don't always follow that as such. Try looking at high learning potential. For some, asynchronous development also bobs up... There's some facebook groups, and potential plus uk.
