To ask if it's only my garden that's suddenly become spider central??

Literally LOADS of webs have appeared around my garden with menacing looking spidees in them! I'm frightened to walk round have to check I'm not walking into their webs - has anyone else noticed this in their garden this week?

I don't know why I said that! Getting my species wrong.
It's actually an Enoplognatha Ovata, the second colouration.
Time I went to bed...

VeganCow · 26/08/2017 10:44

I love spiders. Dont understand the fear in the UK. A spider, or any insect actually, doesnt want to hurt you. They have a place in the world like we do

Cantthinkofanythinggood · 26/08/2017 11:26

I think fallingorbits 'spider exposure' idea works. Just the last few days of leaving the stripey spiders be in the garden & being out there with them I've warmed to them - or at least calmed down around them.

Naming them is a great plan, so far we have Geoffrey, Dave, Quentin & Sebastian. Julia or Sarah? Perhaps I need to start a separate thread for that...

The spiders are now busy catching flies so that the spiders can get themselves ready for hibernation. A bit like other hibernating species. I would much rather the spiders were left alone to get rid of flies any day! Spiders are our friends!

Wauden · 26/08/2017 11:57

Some flying ants popped into the kitchen yesterday. Watched them; they were amazing, they were communicating with each other with their antennae in a circle facing inwards - then they formed another circle, this time facing outwards, as if to say 'wtf, not so clever to sit on a fridge, get me out of here'. Carefully moved them outside. Never thought I would appreciate flying ants but they were really interesting to watch!!!

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 26/08/2017 12:24

I never used to be bothered by them, but in recent years I have become more so and I can't pinpoint why. I don't like web, and they tend to make me jump if they appear on me, but I wouldn't say I'm scared of them. I'm working on the immersion therapy though, there's a long-legged fucker in the corner of the room and I'm ignoring him. In fact, I don't even mind the big beasty house spiders (and quite like the little stripy ones) - so long as they aren't on me! Just these long-legged fuckers make me shudder.

My mum tells a story of one landing on her in the bath, where she had some sort of essential oil in the water. He hit the water and just spread - splayed out and stuck on the oil Grin

We have two resident spiders called Captain Barbosa and Chief Buthelezi Blush

FallingOrbit · 26/08/2017 13:10

What have you got there beyond? A daddy long legs is it? Or a crane fly?

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 26/08/2017 13:34

Not the flying kind of long legged fucker (which is what I would call a daddy long legs but I know that to others they mean this kind and would call the flying one a crane fly), the webby kind

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 26/08/2017 13:35

Googling says it's a cellar spider. Sign of non-arachnophobia that I can google it 😬

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 26/08/2017 13:37

If I got a pet tarantula (I think they are quite cute!) would it scare away all other spiders?

FallingOrbit · 26/08/2017 13:39

Lol! I don't know! maybe if you let it wander around the house it would! Wink

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 26/08/2017 13:41

I don't like them that much! Grin

Pud2 · 26/08/2017 14:27

I'm sitting in my garden and a spider has just fallen down my cleavage. Eak!

FallingOrbit · 26/08/2017 14:28

That'll be an European Boob Weaver!

Like I said, males are horny this time of year!

myusernameisnotmyusername · 26/08/2017 14:38

My house has a 'lean to' where the tumble dryer and various other stuff lives and I've found 3 massive ones in there in the past week! I'm sure they come in from the outdoors because it's made of brick and corrugated iron. I hate it and wish I could move out at this time of year!

myusernameisnotmyusername · 26/08/2017 14:47

Although I have held a tarantula and it was rather cute!

squirrelonapetridish · 26/08/2017 15:01

There are So many spiders in my garden! I wimped out of getting something out of the shed yesterday because there's a massive Web and spider in front of it. Anywhere I move in my (very small) garden, there's a spider. I don't mind the small ones too much but wouldn't want them on me, as for house spiders...ugh hate them. I think our cat eats them as we live in an old property but don't see too many at all. Thank god.

MsLexicon · 26/08/2017 15:39

One ran over my naked back last night... I hoped it was a moth but no errrrgggghhhh
No there are millions of spiders and it looks haunted here the number of cobwebs we keep knocking down. I do live in an old building.

Do you know what a phobia is? It's an irrational fear.

GladAllOver · 26/08/2017 16:43

No. You'd have to keep it in its own house. Other spiders wouldn't know about it unless they got inside its house.

GladAllOver · 26/08/2017 16:44

They are gorgeous :)

user1467662525 · 26/08/2017 17:50

Harvest spiders! 🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷

MyMorningHasBroken · 26/08/2017 22:09

I hate the damm things. Keep walking into them and screeching! :(
Feel free to follow my methods of house spider extermination :
Place about 10 heavy books on top of spider or cover with a bowl.
Only lift books or bowl off after you are certain they are dead. I lifted them off too early once (about 12 hours later) and it was still alive. I now leave them in place for about 3 weeks to be sure.

sayerville · 26/08/2017 22:12

I hate September, seems spider month is early, in the last couple of days I have had 3 giant house spiders, my lifesaver is this catcher, wouldn't be without it!
