To ask if it's only my garden that's suddenly become spider central??

Literally LOADS of webs have appeared around my garden with menacing looking spidees in them! I'm frightened to walk round have to check I'm not walking into their webs - has anyone else noticed this in their garden this week?

happy

That's ok, easily done, thread is getting longer so no worries.

Open chimneys, no, not really. Open fireplaces are places where they will hang out while disused as it's dark and rarely disturbed in most cases.

Older houses just tend to have more of them purely because they've been around longer for the spiders to get a foot (or 8!) in the door. I do a bit of sidework as a satellite/aerial installer and have contracted for the local council on brand new builds that no one has ever lived in. Every attic has spiders in it. Every single one, no exceptions.

They are less common in used attics if they're converted into usable space like a bedroom or play room because there is human traffic. But they are still there, hiding, until all goes quiet and they can come out to do their spidery things :)

Humongous disgusting fucker

Maybe time for a new DP?!

Sorry I couldn't resist, do forgive me :)

ApproachingATunnel · 25/08/2017 19:56

You're not alone. We go out in the garden these days with DC to count the f**s!
One managed to make a full web in front of our door whilst we were out, kids were terrified.
Today we saw the motherf*r of them all- massive one in a web by the road...DS ran away and DD was recoiling in horror in the buggy!
They are taking over the planet!

Our house is full of spiders. We have one, who lives in our extractor fan, called the bathroom cabinet spider. She's enormous. What's strange is that there was one exactly like her before her with a damaged leg. She eventually died and fell in the sink and was immediately replaced by our current one. Seriously it's like Game of Thrones!

indulgentberries · 25/08/2017 21:03

Hmm. I may never eat cornflakes again Shock

Thiswillbemyusername · 25/08/2017 21:36

Spider game of thrones lol

I had one fall on my head once. I was stood underneath the lampshade in the bathroom when i felt what I thought was a hair moving on the top of my head. Thought nothing of it until I looked into the mirror and saw a rather large spider positioned right on the top of my head!

Plenty of squealing and headbanging ensued :)

OnlyTeaForMe · 25/08/2017 21:39

I have issued all the DCs with a large tumbler plastic glass and a piece of card. They're meant to remove their 'own' spiders, but tend to just cover them with the glass and wait for DH or I to do it.
DS2 sometimes sucks them up with the handheld vac, but I think that's cruel and besides, it's usually me that empties it and finds all the carcasses

Shellekin · 25/08/2017 21:56

I used to have the WORST arachnophobia - would literally cry and shake if I was anywhere near a spider, checked my bedroom every night before bed, wouldn't go in the garage or even the shoe cupboard in case there was a spider in there. You get the picture.
Anyway, I saw a Groupon deal for hypnotherapy a couple of years ago, so decided to buy 3 seasons, as I didn't want to pass my phobia onto my DCs. It totally worked and has changed my life! I can now pick them up (admittedly with a glass & paper) and am almost starting to find them quite cute and fascinating. I even held a tarantula a couple of weeks ago.
I never thought it would work as I was so bad - but would urge anyone who is scared to get hypnotherapy as it will free you from the phobia.

thesleepystorm · 25/08/2017 22:07

Sadly I've tried hypnosis and it did bog all

Revenant · 25/08/2017 22:10

@lovemyfurfurbabs shitting hell that is horrific! May I ask exactly where in London? East, West? As I am now panicking a bit about being bitten by a spider as I once saw an article about a woman who was bitten by a spider and developed necrotising fasciitis and had to spend most of her life in a pressure chamber Shock

thesleepystorm · 25/08/2017 22:12

I've also been bitten by a spider which fell onto my face Shock

In SE London

The bastards get annihilated in my house

Revenant · 25/08/2017 22:16

I live in east London and have had maybe 2 smallish ones in the house in 6 years. Cellar spiders in the shed and stripey ones in the garden. But these drop-bear like biting big bastards are a new and terrifying prospect.

flapjackfairy · 25/08/2017 22:24

I asked this the other day but no joy.
I live in the midlands and cant find a zoo course nearby. I have disabled kids so cant travel to london , edinburgh etc so does anyone know of any in my area?
I am truly terrified but desperately want to get over it once and for all !

thesleepystorm · 25/08/2017 22:24

My family are in east London and have also had bitey ones

Revenant · 25/08/2017 22:39

I really wish I hadn't read this thread and then Googled spider bites uk images

BananaThePoet · 25/08/2017 22:40

I was bitten in my bed on my bottom one night before a major exam and spent the rest of the night asleep on the sofa.

Despite this I like spiders in the house. I like cobwebs - I call them nature's fly papers. I'd much rather have spiders catch and eat flies than have chemicals in the house or have flies. Spiders are our friends and they are especially festive in time for Halloween.

CakeNinja · 25/08/2017 22:47

A monster of a tarantula has just launched itself at me while closing the fucking veluxes Shock Shock
After screaming, I collected it back on the end of the pole and vaulted said pole out of the kitchen door Shock
Dp can retrieve in the morning.
I'm off to scrub my elbow - I think it touched me Envy
Fuxache

See your GP and get him to refer you for CBT training. If he can't get that within a reasonable time, you can pay for a course. Google for phobia treatments in your area.

They are about as likely to get you as a drop bear will. :)

That's very sensible. Flies cause far more harm than spiders. But I disagree about Halloween. That just makes spiders out to be even more frightening.

GladAllOver · 25/08/2017 23:00

Did it actually harm you?

MayhemandMadness01 · 25/08/2017 23:08

This one was in the garden a few weeks ago.

CakeNinja · 25/08/2017 23:09

It harmed my soul.

GladAllOver · 25/08/2017 23:15

MayhemandMadness01

Congratulations! That lovely spider is a Dysdera Crocata.
