Ice cream van chimes

Ok, first world whinge approaching.

First of all let me say I love icecream, proper icecream that is, not the stuff they sell on vans and I wouldn't buy it but have no objection to anyone else buying it, and I don't really mind that the vans always park outside my house, that's not the issue.

But aibu to scream silently because of the chimes?

Van I plays this: " Daisy, Daisy give me your answer do ,I'm half crazy, all for the love of". Then it stops, no "you", I get caught out every time, will it play, will it give me closure, can I carry on with my life without feeling that something is missing? No. Every time I am let down.

Van 2 is another matter. It plays The Stripper. Yes, yes, come little children, come, be lured by the siren call of an exotic dancer to buy your lollipops and cheap whipped air masquerading as proper gelato. Surely there is something wrong in encouraging children to equate mild sexual titillation with ice cream gratification, isn't this a form of low level grooming, shouldn't I be reporting them to a safeguarding team somewhere?

I remember when ice cream vans played the teddy bears picnic, all the way through, sold proper scoops of icecream ,and that was enough for us.

Ours plays Greensleeves.

At normal times but also at midnight in December. I think it sells ice cream and special ice cream.

phhhh · 20/07/2020 21:10

where does your van go that plays chitty chitty bang bang as I would like a recording of it.

LioneIRichTea · 20/07/2020 21:18

Hope he’s not having a drink and a drive Confused

SecretNutellaFix · 20/07/2020 21:35

Ours plays the match of the day theme.

I haven't been able to catch ours for over 2 years- usually it's tinkling off into the distance by the time I hear it.

OhWesternWind · 20/07/2020 21:43

Ours plays ‘Oh Oh Antonio’. Topical (although not good PR for ice cream sellers) and you’ve got to love a bit of music hall.

Littlewhitedove · 20/07/2020 22:54

We have two vans, one plays O Sole Mio and the other plays the Happy Wanderer

Shizzlestix · 20/07/2020 22:58

We have Whistle While You Work and Popeye. They drive my DH nuts, he dreads them, but unfortunately, they stop 2 doors down so can’t be avoided!

Thereareliterallynonamesleft · 20/07/2020 23:02

Ours plays Match of the Day too, although there’s also a fish van which announces its arrival with ice cream van music, I ran out into the street with some very disappointed children last week! 😂

IAintentDead · 20/07/2020 23:15

Mines a Yankee Doodle - and has been for over 20 years.

minipilling · 21/07/2020 07:38

Quite a well known one where I used to live played The Good, The Bad and The Ugly! Pretty brilliant. There's an example on YouTube if you want to hear it!

Mypathtriedtokillme · 21/07/2020 07:46

I didn’t know until I was sadly quite old that the music meant there was Ice cream, not that it was all sold out like my mum always told us....

Zilla1 · 21/07/2020 08:29

Do any of the parents of addicts tell then the chimes mean the van has run out of drugs?

If the police ever figure out that the ice cream vans are distributing illicit drugs at night then they might be able to use ANPR or some acoustic technology to locate the vans and search them.

SockQueen · 21/07/2020 08:45

Yankee Doodle here. Hear it all the time but have only ever seen the bastard van once, much to DS1's distress.

KarmaStar · 21/07/2020 11:16

The chimes are lovely, stop being a grump!
The local Mr whippy went to the hospice in the very hot weather in May and gave all the patients and staff free I've creams.they can chime all day for that lovely gesture.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 21/07/2020 11:33

Grin at the Stripper of all things.

The one that plays Oh, Oh Antonio, perhaps he got fed up with people flirting with him and is trying to warn them off with a cautionary tale?

We have a very fast version of Greensleeves, and at my grandma's it was always the teddy bears picnic, cut off mid-phrase.

I'd love Flash Harry's theme!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 21/07/2020 11:41

DP thinks his played the Top Cat theme, which I would love to be true, but he didn't sound terribly sure.

DomDoesWotHeWants · 21/07/2020 11:46

Greensleeves here.

HaudMaDug · 21/07/2020 12:36

Ours was Greensleeves but mum told us it was just the butcher and for years I believed her as he never came into our wee cul-de-sac. Sad
I always wondered why the fish man did not have tunes when he came on fridays.Hmm

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 21/07/2020 14:06

Youve all made me homesick. Ours rings a bell as if it were an old fashioned fire engine.

Youbigdosser · 21/07/2020 15:43

You really need a life I’d the song an I’ve cream van plays is that much of a problem

Andahelterskelterroundmylittle · 21/07/2020 15:58

The local one doesn't come down our street 😔..but then he did have the road safety warning
" Don't skid on a kid"
painted on the back 👀

MistyGreenAndBlue · 21/07/2020 16:19

@ShatnersBassoon

We have Match of the Day with the middle section in a different key to the beginning and end Confused
Ah. Hello neighbour Grin
Crankley · 21/07/2020 16:27

I'll stick to my Haagen Daz - I would love to know the ingredients in a van ice cream - I somehow doubt they would be quite as wholesome.

Jinglebellissimo · 21/07/2020 16:28

We have two and they drive me bonkers!

Somanysocks · 21/07/2020 16:29

Around here it's teddy bears' picnic and always for a split second I think it's my phone.
