To think they should just ban nuts on all flights

Ijustwantaquietlife · 21/08/2017 15:45

Just reading this and it's heartbreaking, seems like such a simple change to ban nuts on all flights to help protect people.

I've heard several people on mn saying they've been on flights where they were banned, seams to make sense as nut allergies are so widespread to just ban all together imo.

Some research regarding desensitisation for those who are interested

My brother once had the pleasure in telling someone who complained that he could not have nuts on a flight because someone had a allergy that he was a twat.

Fekko · 23/08/2017 09:08

Good for him! I am horrified by the stories of relatives, friends and classmates sneaking an allergen into someone's food to prove they aren't allergic.

I used to get sick of I ate a certain food. Not seriously but I'd feel wobbly, sweaty, sleepy and feel like I was going to vomit. I always knew if someone had put it into food (and it wasn't always obvious). I don't think it was ever on purpose but I was really ill at work when it was in a lunch I had. I checked next time I was in the cafe if the pasta sauce had this ingredient in it and it did (which was an odd thing to add anyway!)

Lucysky2017 · 23/08/2017 09:11

I would never deliberately do that and I know nut allergies are there but I don't think it is practical to ban them on all flights so probably better if nut allergy people just don't fly.

raviolidreaming · 23/08/2017 09:28

Well, better for you LucySky - and anyone else with a ludicrous sense of entitlement.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 23/08/2017 09:33

agree with ravioli

So entire family cannot get on a plane to go on holiday because not having a packet of peanuts on a plane is too difficult

Oh and hopefully the child doesn't do anything for a career that involves plane travel, sorry future politician, renowned doctor, business person, navy and army personnel (may include parents in some jobs)

You can't get on the plane

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 23/08/2017 09:34

No one on here has said that the risk will completely disappear

But its a start

Ta1kinPeece · 23/08/2017 09:47

Easyjet / Ryanair / most others do not serve peanuts on planes, but lots of people bring their own food.
So you ban nuts, and dairy, and eggs,
what next?

If a passenger with a nut allergy asks the people near them not to eat nuts, that is fine

but will you ban nuts from the shops and restaurants in the terminals?

does toblerone whole nut count?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 23/08/2017 09:50

It has been explained a number of times on this thread why some people believe a ban on the plane would be a good idea

The other points mentioned by ta1kin have also been covered

raviolidreaming · 23/08/2017 09:54

You?

trixymalixy · 23/08/2017 10:06

Fekko, the reaction you are describing sounds like anaphylaxis. Your blood pressure was probably dropping making you feel wobbly and sleepy. That's how DS's anaphylaxis presents. He doesn't swell up or have breathing difficulties like most people think. Instead he feels faint and wants to lie down as his blood pressure drops dangerously low.

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 23/08/2017 10:18

Grin raviol

People managed to survive the smoking ban. I remember being on flight where smoking was still allowed.

I remember as child people being able to puff on the train. So if people can still manage to go without their addiction for few hours I don't see fuss about people being made/asked to refrain from eating nuts.

hackmum · 23/08/2017 10:22

Ta1kinPeece: "but will you ban nuts from the shops and restaurants in the terminals?"

Several people have already explained why a ban is necessary on a plane: it's because on a plane you can't easily get away from the source of the allergen or find emergency help. SoupDragon even helpfully provided a diagram.

Which bit of that are you struggling with? What don't you understand?

manicmij · 23/08/2017 10:24

So many foods have nuts or are contaminating with nuts nowadays, you may as well ban all food and drink in an enclosed environment. What about in a cinema, could be sitting next to someone munching away with foods containing nuts. Never heard a request to not eat it announcing no nuts will be sold. Impossible to administer. I did declare I was going to eat something containing nuts once on a flight after no boys announcement. Cabin crew took it away to check, came back to tell me "no problem" go ahead.

PurplePenguins · 23/08/2017 10:26

Ricky Gervais does a comedy routine about this in his Humanity Tour and it is actually quite amusing.
It is not amusing to watch a young children struggling to breath. You give them the first epipen and hope beyond hope it works and you don't have to give the 2nd. If you do your anxiety level is through the roof and you hope the paramedics get here before she dies. You watch her balloon up with every passing second and look for any little sign that the reaction is stopping or reversing. In the back of your mind you are praying she won't die.

Surely if you know you have an allergy you'd carry your epi pen/medication.
All sufferers carry at least one pen but it's not a guaranteed cure. The girl on this morning was given both her epipens but it had no effect.

If you don't know then you'd not be asking people not to eat them anyway
This is the most dangerous case. If you dont know you have an allergy, you won't have the meds.

It is not unreasonable to ban nuts on flights.

peachgreen · 23/08/2017 10:28

Baffled by some of the responses on this thread. Imagine honestly believing that your right to eat nuts on a plane should outweigh the health (and, in some instances, LIFE) of a nut allergy sufferer. Imagine being that entitled and selfish. Good grief.

BewareOfDragons · 23/08/2017 10:31

Of course nuts should be banned on planes. It's an enclosed space with little fresh air circulating, which is why germs are spread so easily on planes.

It's not a hardship asking people not to eat nuts for the length of a flight.

4691IrradiatedHaggis · 23/08/2017 10:32

It's been covered many, many times on this thread that the reason they should be banned on a plane is because you are really, really, far and potentially many, many hundreds of miles from help if you go into anaphalyxsis shock.
Somebody even did a really, really, far away plane in the sky and the ambulance and airport/ground diagram mid thread to help visualise those struggling.
Cinema not comparable as you're on ground and easily able to get help.
Why are people finding this so hard to understand?

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 23/08/2017 10:33

@peachgreen it's not a surprise really as I remember the entitled pushchair pushers who trumped wheelchair users on the bus

worridmum · 23/08/2017 10:33

Why do people still bring up the other allgies like dairy and egg these are NOT airborne based allegies so would not need to be banned.

The ban should start and end with the airborne alligents that are doublely dangerous in a inclosed space which is 30,000 in the air and a long time away from help.

4691IrradiatedHaggis · 23/08/2017 10:34

I know, it's honestly baffling. This thread perfectly shows why there definitely should be a ban as there's a minority of people who really couldn't care less about others.

BorisTrumpsHair · 23/08/2017 10:45

Ultimately the reasons airlines will ban nuts on planes won't be because of risk to individual passengers, but because of the potential financial liability to airlines of emergency diversions and landings, and resulting compensation claims and potential lawsuits from passengers etc.

You can guarantee that those claiming their rights to "NUT ON PLANES! NUTS ON PLANES!" will be lining up to sue airlines for any inconvenience they may have from any such (hopefully life saving) diversion.

Another great neo-liberal capitalist win! Its not the people that matter, but the profits.

Madeyemoodysmum · 23/08/2017 10:59

My dd is a peanut and almond allergy sufferer. Thank god she doesn't react to traces or being in the same room as nuts but I'm aware this could change at any point so air travel is still a worry for us.

We give her Nutella at least twice a week to keep her tolerance up on that
As hazelnuts are a common baking ingredient and would be harder to avoid in uk than peanuts I've found.

Anyway the selfishness and entitlement on here is shocking and as you can get new allergies at any age god forbid any of you get something later in life.

I am a very allergic person myself. Not nuts But I live with the guilt that I've passed this gene on to my dd and her life is comprised. We could never visit Thailand for example.

She won't be able to risk a Chinese or Indian with friends when she's older. She will always be 'the one" that missed out or has to ask if they can go elsewhere.

I hope too god some of you are trolls and if your not I can't imagine what kind of a person you really are!!!!

DeleteOrDecay · 23/08/2017 11:08

Why are people finding this so hard to understand?

Because they are being deliberately obtuse and pig-headed.

I am so grateful that myself and no one in my immediate family do not suffer from allergies. I'm astounded at the ignorance and selfish attitudes being displayed on this thread. What ever happened to human compassion and common decency?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 23/08/2017 11:18
