AIBU to be disappointed with Joss Whedon

Yes, I know it's just sleb twaddle, and it doesn't impact my life one bit...

That said, I really thought he was one of the good guys and it turns out he's an entitled cheat, as well as a gaslighting arsehole. It feels like a betrayal - he was supposed to be this feminist creator, this writer of strong women and equality, and it turns out he's just a regular creep.

Kai Cole's article.

@MorrisZapp I think you might be thinking of Anthony Stewart Head who played Giles in Buffy. He is British and was famous for the Nescafé Gold adverts.

Scoobygang7 · 22/08/2017 12:27

@TheHodgeoftheHedge me too stole it off my Facebook feed that a friend was tagged in.

Scoobygang7 · 22/08/2017 12:29

@MorrisZapp you're thinking of the lovely Anthony Stewart Head. He played Giles in Buffy and was in the Nescafé ads of yesteryear.

Scoobygang7 · 22/08/2017 12:30

Apologies cross posted with @TheHodgeoftheHedge

Neutrogena · 22/08/2017 12:31

What is Joss's side of the story?

sweetbitter · 22/08/2017 12:32

I guess it depends to what extent you bought into him being a feminist. I loved Buffy (and Firefly) but not because I thought it was a seminal piece of feminist work. Yes it featured a great twist on the dumb-blonde-as-victim trope, and I guess I thought it was good that Whedon wanted to write strong female leads, especially as a man. But the whole thing of him being a feminist icon and cultivating that mythology and then referencing his relationship with his wife as part of that was never really on my radar so I don't feel that personally let down.

I think he's been a dick to his wife and I totally agree with her that he has betrayed her doubly, as a husband and as a so called feminist. But as a "fan", I still think he still did some good work professionally that helped a feminist cause, even if he's clearly far from a "proper" feminist on a personal level.

Lauralou69 · 22/08/2017 12:51

Might be time for some of you to twaddle over to 'is prostitution rape thread'. Some very insightful views that question the point some of you have made about Whedon and his attitude to prostituion.

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 22/08/2017 13:04

A long lasting marriage to a woman with brains who isn't an underwear model (yes there's nothing stopping models being clever but this is about perception) carries a certain sort of cachet. It gives you feminist/woke Brownie points.

I read JW's behaviour as being worse than standard infidelity because it seems a lot as if he was using her as camouflage just until he made the big league and didn't need her any more (that's clearly what she believes) and b) he was gaslighting the hell out of her for ten years or more and c) the power dynamics within multiple affairs with his employees would always be suspicious.

VestalVirgin · 22/08/2017 17:58

I guess it depends to what extent you bought into him being a feminist.

I never took him really seriously.

That said, people in general consider him so feminist he made the page quote for the TVTropes "Feminist Fantasy" page.

There's dozens of female feminists, but apparently they weren't important enough.

Dervel · 22/08/2017 19:11

I predict he'll keep his head down, then turn up the volume on his left wing rhetoric and all will be forgiven. His career will go from strength to strength. I'll be pretty pissed off if ends up writing that doctor who episode he promised when they cast a female doctor, as he obviously just wants to be surrounded by those young, beautiful, needy and aggressive women, and not in fact all that bothered with women outside of that at all.

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 22/08/2017 19:24

I also predict that absolutely none of the women in question will breathe a word whilst he's still has final power of veto on hiring for billion dollar movies.

Dervel · 22/08/2017 19:31

Well that's an interesting one as ANY revelation would be way more of a negative impact on the woman's careers than it would be on his.

StarkintheSouth · 22/08/2017 20:22

Buffy is one of my favourite shows and of huge importance to me. I was 'lucky' enough to be at an event with JW and it was a highlight of 2015. But this saddens and angers me. It doesn't diminish the significance of the TV show but it's awful and I really feel for his wife. Just goes to show those who shout loudest about equality are more usually the worst offenders against it.

Scoobygang7 · 22/08/2017 20:44

@StarkintheSouth I nearly cried watching my newsfeed light up with that surprise. I think I know what event it was you were at.

Circumlocutor · 23/08/2017 00:25

What a cock. Unsurprising though. Plain geeky bloke has massive success in entertainment industry and discovers his sexual currency has increased by 1000%. So he takes full advantage.

'“In many ways I was the HEIGHT of normal, in this culture. We’re taught to be providers and companions and at the same time, to conquer and acquire — specifically sexually — and I was pulling off both!”

Is this^^ the cheater's version of 'some big boys made me do it'?

What a weasel.

Celestia26 · 23/08/2017 01:09

LauraLou69 please stop saying 'heresy' when you mean 'hearsay'. They mean completely different things.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 23/08/2017 01:12

Man disappoints woman.

HOLD THE FUCKING HEADLINE.

Lauralou69 · 23/08/2017 08:29

Celestia26

Please stop being a tedious grammer nazi...........

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 23/08/2017 08:54

Excellent article here on the subject.

CookieLady · 23/08/2017 08:54

Lauralou69, I believe you meant to write grammar and Nazi. Grin

Circumlocutor · 23/08/2017 08:57

I don't think pointing out the difference between hearsay and heresy is grammar Nazi territory. Using 'heresy' gives a very different John Knox vibes to the posts.

Lauralou69 · 23/08/2017 09:17

It was fairly obvious what I meant and that autocheck had happened......still, trying to discredit someones opinion because if it is soooooo predictable! 😉

StarkintheSouth · 25/08/2017 18:14

@Scoobygang7 I was almost in tears when I saw him. Now I'm just sad. X

EllenRipley · 25/08/2017 18:51

Great piece @TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross , thankyou

Scoobygang7 · 25/08/2017 19:26

@StarkintheSouth yeah I'd have been too. The organiser is usually great for awesome guests but with Sean and jewel sorting that is amazing
