AIBU about Owen Jones

PickyParent · 18/08/2017 21:51

During a discussion about neo-Nazis and alt-right in the US today, my MIL started ranting on about a journalist called Owen Jones, who is allegedly part of alt-right, is an anti-feminist, Corbynista, hysterical, storms off in huffs on tv, and is a general twat.

I had not come across this chap at all, despite reading a broad cross-section of media and being quite well-informed and up to date (and I try to have an open mind on things except Trump and neoNazis)

So I googled him and can't find anything really awful about him (I don't object to him supporting Corbyn).
Am I being obtuse?
Is MIL right?
Am IBU? Hmm

HE had a big twitter spat yesterday and was called out on it by quite a few journalists and political pundits for misrepresenting another guardian journo's tweets. Basically he posted an old tweet out of context which sent lots if his fans after the journo. He has over 500000 followers (i think).

Seems a bit self righteous with a big opinion of himself.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 19/08/2017 14:30

He doesn't like to be questioned that's for certain.

bridgetoc · 19/08/2017 14:32

He writes for The Guardian........ That should tell you everything you need to know.

People like Owen are why the left wont get into power.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 19/08/2017 14:43

I'm a fan. Chavs is a fantastic book and encapsulates the brutal legacy of Thatcherism and class war fare brilliantly. The establishment is pretty good too.
I think OJ is a very interesting young man. Horses for courses though

hackmum · 19/08/2017 15:53

He is extraordinarily youthful. Amusingly, I once got modded on the Guardian site for saying he looked about 12 - somebody at the paper is obviously sensitive about it.

I used to quite like him (I broadly agree with him about the demonisation of the working-class, the dreadfulness of the Tories etc) but he is very unsound on the transgender issue and seems to fall in with the idea that transactivists are all lovely and fluffy while the nasty feminists are horrible TERFs. I also can't take anyone seriously who actually uses the term "cis" without irony.

Saucery · 19/08/2017 16:02

If you have difficulty sleeping I can recommend his book The Establishment. Fascinating subject smothered by his inability to stay on a subject for more than a paragraph and regurgitate A Level Politics syllabus instead with added Big Words.

quencher · 19/08/2017 16:03

"Brocialist" I have just googled this word and I love the meaning. It defines quite a few people I come a cross on Mn. I will be adding to my vocabulary. Thanks

WinnieTheMe · 19/08/2017 16:05

I quite like OJ. I think he's a smart and interesting guy. Not right on everything, but who is? In general, I'd always read something he wrong though.

Hackmum - oh god really? Re the trans issues. That might kill it for me...

cuirderussie · 20/08/2017 12:48

"The Likes of Us" by Michael Collins is a far, far better book about the working class than "Chavs". I recommend it.

Ktown · 20/08/2017 12:51

I liked his booked 'chavs' but he goes a bit off topic and angry about things he doesn't seem to know much about not reference.
He seems to support transactivism which I find distasful since they seem to hate women.
In general I like his writing style though.

DadOnIce · 20/08/2017 12:54

He is a left-wing writer who believes the disaster of Brexit should happen, because he thinks the democratic majority should be "respected".

On just about every other thing he writes about, Owen Jones believes in challenging the view of the democratic majority because he doesn't like it.

ByTheSea · 20/08/2017 12:55

I like him a lot. Don't agree with him on everything but do agree on most issues and think he is generally a very clued-up and eloquent young voice on the left.

Morsecode · 20/08/2017 13:06

His mum should come and get him from the Grauniad and tell him to put a sock in it.

20nil · 20/08/2017 13:10

I find him to be arrogant, self righteous and intolerant. I vote Labour.

derxa · 20/08/2017 13:20

You don't like your MIL do you OP
Owen Jones is very annoying.

chelseahotel · 20/08/2017 13:20

I first came across him during the election. He was on TV a lot and I started to follow him on Twitter and read his column in the Guardian. Quite liked him at first but as time goes by he just annoys me with his hysterical ranting. I guess I'm definitely not his target demographic (59) left of centre with teenage children. Mind you they dislike him more than I doGrin.

LRD I'd love to see the membership statistics for MN. My guess would be that the proportion of those with teens has increased massively in the last 5 years but we are probably still in the minority.

dadshere · 20/08/2017 13:27

Firstly, he is homosexual, so unlikely to fit well into the alt-right narrative. Secondly, although he often claims to support Corbyn, a simple perusal of his artical history will show that he is anything but. Thirdly, he is a twat.

stitchglitched · 20/08/2017 13:32

Hi Owen, you woman hating wanker!

This just cracked me up.

AlpacaLipsNow · 20/08/2017 13:46

I'm as lefty as they come but I think he's a self righteous gobshite who takes himself far too seriously.

TakeThatFuckingDressOffNow · 20/08/2017 14:32

Thanks to whoever posted that link about his view on women & pornography.

I am so disappointed and a bit cross with him too. Thank god for mumsnet women sharing that, so well informed.

I've changed my mind on him (with regards to women) since posting yesterday.
