AIBU about Owen Jones

PickyParent · 18/08/2017 21:51

During a discussion about neo-Nazis and alt-right in the US today, my MIL started ranting on about a journalist called Owen Jones, who is allegedly part of alt-right, is an anti-feminist, Corbynista, hysterical, storms off in huffs on tv, and is a general twat.

I had not come across this chap at all, despite reading a broad cross-section of media and being quite well-informed and up to date (and I try to have an open mind on things except Trump and neoNazis)

So I googled him and can't find anything really awful about him (I don't object to him supporting Corbyn).
Am I being obtuse?
Is MIL right?
Am IBU? Hmm

Not alt-right. Left wing. Bit of a twat.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 18/08/2017 23:22

Im intrigued- what party do all you Owen Jones haters vote for?

I used to vote Labour, 40 years of voting Labour until the last election when I voted Lib Dem. For Holyrood elections I used to vote Labour but now vote Conservative. Blame Corbyn.

SylviaPoe · 18/08/2017 23:22

Labour.

BonnieF · 18/08/2017 23:23

I completely agree that Owen Jones is the sort of hectoring, intolerant, preaching prat that gives us lefties a bad name.

His recent columns have verged on hysteria, and the latest one attacking centrist Blairites ( who are supposed to be on the same side as him) is just unhinged.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 18/08/2017 23:25

My politically-literate teenager had also not come across Owen Jones

Tbh, I think it must be quite hard to be politically literate and not have come across Owen Jones- he is ubiquitous.

LoveMySituation · 18/08/2017 23:25

He may write for the Guardian, but he is freelance, so doesn't promote their agenda as much as some others

LoveMySituation · 18/08/2017 23:27

Columnists I meant to say

user1498240695 · 18/08/2017 23:30

Treat yourself to his first book CHAVS The demonization of the working class. Superb book, well worth a read.

GinsAndTonic · 18/08/2017 23:30

WhollyFather

Owen Jones is a right-on lefty, a PC know-nothing who writes for the Guardian.

Perfection in a sentence!

SylviaPoe · 18/08/2017 23:31

I now feel a need to defend him.

It may have been the cat picture.

I'm also amused by the poster whose DH is only an economic conservative, as if being a social conservative would be more extreme.

PickAChew · 18/08/2017 23:31

That particular spat goes both ways. My own MP is an original Blairite and vehemently anti-Corbyn to the point that he's threatened to leave the party. I suspect that many in the local party wish he would.

PickAChew · 18/08/2017 23:33

Class cat, mind. An angry young cat, judging by that face.

Hate it when people do that. Impossible not to have some smidgen of empathy with another mad cat person.

squoosh · 18/08/2017 23:35

The moggy just strengthens my opinion. If it had been a jack russell however...

SylviaPoe · 18/08/2017 23:35

Maybe Owen and the cat will appear in some kind of kitchen sink drama.

Or maybe Owen Jones will be a character in the drama, and Ben Whishaw will play him.

cuirderussie · 18/08/2017 23:37

He's a misogynistic arsehole. Threw lesbians under the bus by claiming they were bigots for not wanting to have sex with penises. Half-baked sixth form politics. And I didn't like Chavs. Owen is not working class and he gets it spectacularly wrong.

LoveMySituation · 18/08/2017 23:37

I spy a perfect opportunity to post my favourite Keir videoGrin

Dawnedlightly · 18/08/2017 23:38

He has nice manners. I thought I knew him and gave him or tap-hug-hello thing in a pub and he was charming.

Rainbunny · 18/08/2017 23:38

I agree with him on many things and still find him utterly, utterly annoying. He could say something brilliant that impressed me and I'd still want to tell him just shut up. He just really grates on me and when it comes to LGBT issues no one else is allowed to have an opinion or experience because apparently he officially owns that subject.

Dawnedlightly · 18/08/2017 23:41

Lovemy ha! He looks about 12. Grin

bathildabagshot1 · 18/08/2017 23:47

Yes Owen Jones is a knob.

Mainly because he writes well, and well enough to sell two factually researched books, as well as critiques right wing parties, and those that support them.

More power to his elbow.

bathildabagshot1 · 18/08/2017 23:48

Ahhh "Right-on lefty" usually used to try to "silence" someone.

Thought you dweeblings on the right were all against that.

squoosh · 18/08/2017 23:51

Poor Owen. It's not like he'd ever talk drivel to try and silence a group he disagrees with...

bathildabagshot1 · 18/08/2017 23:52

I read that article, much of it is not drivel.

Would you care to elucidate with reference to specifics why your think it is?

JustAnotherPoster00 · 18/08/2017 23:53

I used to vote Labour but now vote Conservative. Blame Corbyn.

Did he stand in any Holyrood elections? Hmm
