AIBU about Owen Jones

PickyParent · 18/08/2017 21:51

During a discussion about neo-Nazis and alt-right in the US today, my MIL started ranting on about a journalist called Owen Jones, who is allegedly part of alt-right, is an anti-feminist, Corbynista, hysterical, storms off in huffs on tv, and is a general twat.

I had not come across this chap at all, despite reading a broad cross-section of media and being quite well-informed and up to date (and I try to have an open mind on things except Trump and neoNazis)

So I googled him and can't find anything really awful about him (I don't object to him supporting Corbyn).
Am I being obtuse?
Is MIL right?
Am IBU? Hmm

He's a misogynistic tool, but your mother is wrong about the rest.

Mrsjohnmurphy · 18/08/2017 22:12

Brocialist Grin

PricklyBall · 18/08/2017 22:12

@PollyFlint Oh god, now I am going to have nightmares about the unholy love-child of Milo and Owen. Damien, Corbyn 2 Be afraid, be very afraid (hopelessly mixing my films here...)

Iwannasnack · 18/08/2017 22:13

He's a very left wing journalist. I like and agree with most but not all he has to say. Chavs is a good read. He's annoyed me a bit too recently but not sure why.

He stormed off tv as a pp said when the newspaper reviewers were minimising the fact that the Florida nightclub attack was in a gay bar. He is gay, I believe.

Threehoursfromhome · 18/08/2017 22:14

Well he's certainly not alt-right....

Owen Jones's demographic is the 18-24 group, and he was very active on Twitter getting out Labour vote in the last election. Your MIL may not like him, but he is not aiming to appeal to her generation.

Are you being unreasonable to not have heard of him? I don't know, but he's not trying to appeal to the Mumsnet demographic; his audience is Mumsnet's teenage children. Political pundits who appealed to my parents, didn't appeal to me as a teen either.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 18/08/2017 22:15

Giant, giant knob.

Left wing, but in that misogynistic way some left-wing men are.

To be fair, though, I thought he had a point storming off the TV. They were being arseholes at the time.

I very rarely think he has a point, though.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 18/08/2017 22:16

Owen Jones's demographic is the 18-24 group ...he's not trying to appeal to the Mumsnet demographic; his audience is Mumsnet's teenage children.

Are there many more MNers with teens than there are MNers under 24?

lessworriedaboutthecat · 18/08/2017 22:17

I think she may have got him confused with Alex Jones.

Has she confused him with Alex jones? I think that's his name. He is an alt right trumpist American shock jock (but on video) that flogs qvc type shite in the middle of his frankly insane tirades.

SylviaPoe · 18/08/2017 22:17

He is a brocialist and did a lot of undermining of Corbyn.

He changed his tune when loads of young people started singing, oh Jeremy Corbyn, all the time.

He's likes to be 'on the right side of history' so will follow the herd.

He's just a kind of average political commentator really. He's not alt right, but he's not some kind of blonde Che Guevara either.

sobeyondthehills · 18/08/2017 22:18

He is a very angry young man

Theworldisfullofidiots · 18/08/2017 22:18

Used to like him. Think he's a bit of a twat now. Left but views tend to swing within that according to convenience. wrote a bit of stupid piece about 'centerists' recently.

CaptainWarbeck · 18/08/2017 22:19

He wasn't a Corbynista for a long time, I'm pretty sure he wrote after the election about being wrong not having supported Corbyn previously.

PollyFlint · 18/08/2017 22:20

pricklyball Hahahahaha! What a genuinely horrific prospect.

I can sort of imagine that Milo and Owen could conceivably have a guilty hate-fuck, which is such a deeply horrible image.

Regularsizedrudy · 18/08/2017 22:20

I like him. He's a lefty and as far as I know has never said anything anti-feminist? He does get a lot of fake twitter accounts made which tweet as if they were him and say awful things to try and sully his reputation

SylviaPoe · 18/08/2017 22:21

He got into some dispute with some people from on here about trans people.

He also got into a dispute with One Direction fans.

He seems to get into a lot of disputes.

stitchglitched · 18/08/2017 22:21

He's very dismissive of women. And a massive attention seeking twat.

BeyondQueenOfLists · 18/08/2017 22:21

Less alt-right, more right-bellend.

Hassled · 18/08/2017 22:22

My biggest objection to him is his youth. How dare anyone be that clever and successful while still looking about 15?

Wormulonian · 18/08/2017 22:23

The cleverest boy in the sixth form" is how I think of him and not in a good way.

I think feminists do have issues with him - lots of stuff written online . Most recent is probably this:
My book explores how and why wider society both buys into and perpetuates the mythology about why men pay for sex. Even amongst leftist men, who claim to be pro-feminist, there is a view that men have “need” for an “outlet”. Owen Jones for example, writing about a case of three judges being sacked for watching porn whilst supposedly deliberating in court, mused, “None of it was illegal, but they were still publicly embarrassed and dismissed…Who knows, maybe an otherwise tense judge seeking a quick bit of relief will concentrate better.”
The idea that watching pornography – which is filmed and photographed prostitution – can relieve tension is a classic punter justification, as illustrated in the above comment.

Whatthefucknameisntalreadytake · 18/08/2017 22:23

I thought his books, The Establishment, and Chavs, were excellent. He is far from the right, alt or not!!

squoosh · 18/08/2017 22:25

He's an arse who changes his views depending on which way the wind is blowing. Anti Corbyn pre-election, desperately trying to ingratiate himself with Corbyn and Corbybnistas post-election. Pre election he was anti-Brexit, post election he's meekly going along with Corbyn's view that Brexit must be respected because it's what people voted for. Even though these days he seems to spend all his energy on a campaign to oust Boris Johnson from his seat, even though that's who people voted for.

Tedious man.

stitchglitched · 18/08/2017 22:25

He managed to write an article about IVF and surrogacy without mentioning women once.

SylviaPoe · 18/08/2017 22:25

He's 33.
