I know this is controversial. I have been doing some practice papers with ds for a few months as he has decided he would like to try to get into the nearby grammar school. As we haven't used a tutor I am not sure what sort of mark would indicate he has a good chance of passing. Would really love to hear from others who probably have more of an idea than me. Thanks.

Not a simple question I'm afraid. You need to look at the schools you are aiming for. Some have a " pass mark" others the mark needed to get a place varies with the year group - eg one year a very bright cohort may warrant a high entry, other years the standard is lower.

Try on the 11 plus forums for your area

I agree, it depends on the area. It'd be worth checking local FB forums, or school websites for admissions criteria. Some areas use standardised scores, where 100 is the average, and others will vary yearly depending on the cohort. Most primary schools should be able to advise you - ours gave out a spreadsheet with the last 3 years test results, and the average % that those children had got in practice papers. Here where I live (NI), we don't have the 11 plus, but something v similar. You'd need to be getting 80% of higher to be sure of a grammar school place, for most areas.
