To think the hotel shouldn't allow this?

On holiday in Croatia (which is lovely). Yesterday a sign appears in our hotel and under everyone's door saying the pool will be closed for tomorrow for a private wedding party. Now there is only one pool in the hotel and the hotel isn't advertised as one that does weddings and nothing was mentioned in the reviews. We were planning on being out and about today anyway so it doesn't actually impact on us but aibu in thinking that you should be able to use the only pool in your hotel?

That is a bit rubbish of them. They should have warned you when checking in at least. Some people like to revolve their whole holiday by the pool

GeillisTheWitch · 17/08/2017 12:18

Is it just me wondering why the wedding party needs the pool anyway, who goes swimming at a wedding?

Loungepants · 17/08/2017 12:19

Oh no, I'd be quite upset. The pool is one of the main attractions for me.

How strange! Did they not think to mention it when you booked? As Witch says, some people park themselves by the pool for the entire time - its what they go for! Is the hotel on a beach? Perhaps they are assuming everyone will go there instead (much prefer sea swimming anyway and the water in Croatia is beautiful sigh).

hellokittymania · 17/08/2017 12:26

I know people who go swimming after the wedding, but not during the wedding. Grin

I would be upset too. I know quite a few hotels that do weddings, but they are usually on the beach. Some hotels have private rooms so no one else is bothered by the wedding.

honeyroar · 17/08/2017 12:26

Ive had it happen a couple of times while in hotels in Africa. I don't like it, it doesn't make you feel very welcome, it's like they've got your money so they don't care. The weddings have looked gorgeous though (from the balcony!). It should only happen at hotels with two pools. I'd definitely mention it on reviews.

Travis1 · 17/08/2017 12:28

I would not be a happy bunny at all. I tend to dook in and out of the pool throughout the day to keep cool and actually just love lazing and reading on the loungers so I'd probably complain.

RedHelenB · 17/08/2017 12:30

Go to the bathing platform over the road instead!

SilverBirchTree · 17/08/2017 12:34

Annoying!! I'd be asking the hotel for a partial refund.

I've based entire holidays around plans to relax by a hotel pool & id be really ticked off if the hotel banned me for a whole day without warning.

poppym12 · 17/08/2017 12:35

Is the pool on the roof there? If it's the hotel I'm thinking of, I hope the airport take off and landing directions have changed since we were there last month or the vows might be a bit drowned out Grin

Joey7t8 · 17/08/2017 12:40

That's not really acceptable. Lots of families' holidays revolve around the pool. I'd make a complaint with the travel company you booked with and/or the hotel itself.

TripAdvisor as well.

ptumbi · 17/08/2017 12:40

I've just come back from Croatia! It is lovely, but tourists are 30% up on last year and the infrastructure is showing signs of not being able to cope (buses jam-packed, airport departure lounge crammed, islands beautiful but full...)

meercat23 · 17/08/2017 12:41

At a hotel in France earlier this summer we arrived after a long journey to find that the restaurant shown on their website was only available to coach parties. No advance warning that it would not be available to all guests. Will be sure to check in advance that all facilities will be available for the whole of our stay in future.

Jaxhog · 17/08/2017 12:45

This is what TripAdviser reviews are for. To check before you go, and to report these incidents when you get home (or while you're there, if you're brave).

Sciurus83 · 17/08/2017 12:51

I HATE THIS!!! It happened to me on a foreign trip to an exotic location. I had spent the previous few days in the rainforest in some veeeerrry basic accommodation, got back to the nearest hectic grimy city and decided that I would treat us to a night in the naice hotel, swim to counter the muggy heat, lovely. Get down there with my swimmers on all excited for a dip in the pool to be met with a gaggle of squealing teenagers in ball gowns taking selfies, they weren't even using the bloody pool but I wasn't allowed to go for a swim!! If they'd told me when I arrived that day that the pool wasn't open I would have gone elsewhere, I paid for the nice hotel for the goddamn pool and was only there one night! I'm still bloody furious about it (its been 3 years....)

BanyanTree · 17/08/2017 12:52

Tell the reception that you want a partial refund if you cannot use the facilities that you have paid for.

GahBuggerit · 17/08/2017 12:55

Id absolutely attempt to use the pool anyway Grin, anywhere Ive been it would be impossible to police it.

Then I'd be asking for a partial refund or speaking to the travel operator about some free trips for the day.

WombatStewForTea · 17/08/2017 12:58

Poppy that's exactly the hotel! And no still very noisy! Bathing platform over the road is rammed. As it is we've got a boat down to Mlini which is beautiful!

And nope nothing mentioned at all on check-in or booking! Not even bothered about a refund just thought it was really cheeky!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/08/2017 13:01

It might not be the actual pool they're using, but the terrace around it?

I've had similar happen on cruise ships where entire lounges are closed for the use of large business groups, sometimes several times ... ditto bars, restaurants and more

They won't have mentioned this as the wedding's just one day and they wouldn't want to risk a drop in a whole week's bookings because of it, and the PP was correct that once they've got your money they simply don't care

So yes, definitely ask for some compensation and make sure to leave something on Trip Advisor

SilverBirchTree · 17/08/2017 13:01

Really cheeky. Let them have it on trip advisor.

MissionItsPossible · 17/08/2017 13:01

I would complain and ask for a partial refund. Or just go down there anyway and do dive bombs into the pool and splash all the guests Grin

SapphireStrange · 17/08/2017 13:02

Is it such a disaster? It's only one day. Confused

Joey7t8 · 17/08/2017 13:08

Is it such a disaster? It's only one day.

It's one day out of a 6 day once a year holiday. I'd be pissed off.

TieGrr · 17/08/2017 13:14

If it doesn't actually impact on you, I'd let it go. The stress of thinking about it and complaining about it and demanding partial refunds is not worth it.
