Emigrating because of brexit/current political issues

Have you done it or know anyone who has?
Over the last few years I've seen a real rise in people saying they plan to but I'm not sure if anyone has?
Aibu to wonder if it's all hot air or if there has been a rise in immigration since the conservatives were voted back in twice/brexit?

brand no I meant expats moving back, not Hong kongers. Actually a lot of HKers are in favour of closer ties with the mainland, if not total integration. It's got parallels with Brexit actually but kind of in reverse. The 'winners' under the current system want democracy and quasi independence. The 'losers' who don't see many opportunities for their kids want to tie up with China.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 17/08/2017 15:06

I don't think anyone has suggested other countries offer a utopia. People are moving because of the negatives of Brexit, that are more than cultural nuances and local laws.

Cantseethewoods · 17/08/2017 15:09

Yes but no-one knows what the impact of Brexit will actually be, do they? It seems crazy to say, leave UK because of fears of economic downturn that may or may not be realised to move to say, France, which has 21% youth unemployment and is structurally economically fucked.

We left before Brexit. Watched the Brexit result unfold on TV in horror. And now will be staying put. Whats to come back for?! What a mess..

GhostofFrankGrimes · 17/08/2017 15:13

People are making a judgement call. If Brexit is bad it won't be a "downturn" it will be a lost generation. Do you see much prospect of a "good" Brexit? It's also an issue of political atmosphere i.e. increased race hate crimes, anti foreigner sentiment.

Half DH's friends, but DH is Polish so that's to be expected- people don't tend to stay in a country that's made them feel rejected and unwelcome.

I would if I didn't have dc for whom the disruption would be so huge.

splatattack · 17/08/2017 15:16

I'm going!! For real, and in large part because of the uk uncertainty. My other half is from mainland Europe. I am so grateful that I qualify for an Irish passport and British...more options..

rainbowduck · 17/08/2017 15:17

Well that disintegrated quickly!

I still don't understand Mission's point.

We moved to Switzerland ten years ago. (Have lived in various other countries but this is where we settled). Always wondered if we would move back (not seriously though, as we much prefer the lifestyle here and our trips to the U.K. are only done as a family obligation).

Brexit was the final nail in the coffin for us and we have every intention of applying for dual nationality next year when we qualify.

I would also happily cut all ties with the U.K.

(And Switzerland has just as many nationalists as everywhere else, they are also a true democracy, and take pride in voting on absolutely everything. They have also recognized that they cannot have access to the common market without free movement, and to forge ahead with their proposed capped immigration would actually have been economic suicide, so they went back to the drawing board and started again. I found this decision sensible.)

ghost tbh I don't know but I do notice that Brits are more pessimistic than everyone else and I guess I still see huge amounts of good in the UK and so much energy, so my personal feeling is that UK will get through it.

balsamicbarbara · 17/08/2017 15:19

I know exactly one person who actually followed through and moved to Sweden. But they work remotely anyway and are very highly politically strung.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 17/08/2017 15:20

That's the problem with Brexit though it's based on feelings rather than sound judgment.

PerfectlyPooPoo · 17/08/2017 15:52

Yes we are. We have just remortgaged with a no penalty release for leaving early though as I said to dh it could be really horrible before we get ourselves organised and I'd rather not have that to worry about to.

I've been in the UK nearly a decade and I'm not taking on their Brexit problem as mine. The first real sign of it hitting the fan and we'll be gone.

TheLegendOfBeans · 17/08/2017 15:58

We've just moved to Europe and are now on the brink of whether to return as basically DH has an impeccable CV, good international experience and he's been looking for work since April.

Apparently no employer wants to take on Brits as the work permit effect of Brexit stands to cost companies shitloads when the UK formally leaves the EU.

Uncertainty over the financial impact is making firms choose other (EU?) nationals over Brits - a trend that's across Europe according to recruitment agents in the country to which we've just moved.

If we need to go back - and we fundamentally do - then that's cost us £4K.
