Emigrating because of brexit/current political issues

NewName90 · 17/08/2017 11:03

Have you done it or know anyone who has?
Over the last few years I've seen a real rise in people saying they plan to but I'm not sure if anyone has?
Aibu to wonder if it's all hot air or if there has been a rise in immigration since the conservatives were voted back in twice/brexit?

The industry DH and I work in requires the single market, and is flourishing in other parts of Europe.

We will have no choice but to move once we're out of the single market.

We're self-employed. It'll be no fuss. We already have family out there and I speak the language.

No hot air here.

SleepFreeZone · 17/08/2017 13:04

Mission. Perfectly put 🙊

cochineal7 · 17/08/2017 13:07

Definitely thinking about it and keeping my options open. Am EU citizen, have lived and worked in the UK since 2000. Raising family here. Have Permanent Residence but May has recently said that will not count anymore post-Brexit which seems hugely unfair as it required a load of evidence and a lot of effort. And was supposed to be Permanent. Yes, Brexit does change the game. But so do the effects of the austerity politics. The combination is toxic in my eyes. Not moving yet, but will decide once Brexit negotiations become a bit more clear. I think many are waiting for more clarity before actually moving.

Ecureuil · 17/08/2017 13:09

I know 2 families who have done it as a direct result of Brexit. We are biding our time but will be going too (not just Brexit related but that made our decision much easier)

MargaretTwatyer · 17/08/2017 13:09

No. Irish spouse. No intention of leaving and good chance Brexit will improve his earning potential.

ChasedByBees · 17/08/2017 13:15

I know a few who have already left and some who are seeking dual nationality to increase options of leaving in future.

Nonibaloni · 17/08/2017 13:17

I know 2 families who currently live in European countries, was supposed to be for a fixed time but they are currently sorting staying permanently. What they are hearing from their new countries really worries them regarding leaving this U.K. in the cold.

bridgetoc · 17/08/2017 13:39

Only miserable remoaners say such things. I've never known one to actually do it though. They just moan and moan and moan. It's what they do best.

Mandysmumbun · 17/08/2017 13:42

No its not Mission. Spent much time in Australia have you Hmm

Know the history of Australia do you? You'll recall then it was the British who were fucking cruel beyond belief to the locals.

The irony of you talking about hypocrisy.

KimmySchmidt1 · 17/08/2017 13:44

I know 4 people who have. 3 lawyers and a consultant surgeon. All highly skilled, higher rate tax payers.

TheABC · 17/08/2017 13:45

Would love to. Realistically, I don't have dual nationality and with a young family in tow, I am not at the top of eligibility criteria for any work visas, either.

It does make me laugh to see the pre brexit scramble to Spain by pensioners (the largest group to vote for it!).

MissionItsPossible · 17/08/2017 13:50

I'm not talking about the history, I'm talking about the now. Everyone knows that Australia takes a tough stance with immigration and the less said about the casual racism, the better.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 17/08/2017 13:51

I thought even most ardent Brexiteers now admit that things are going to be very very difficult for this country over the next 15-20 years.

Why wouldn't people think about leaving?

Ecureuil · 17/08/2017 13:52

As you can see from this thread, quite a few have done it. I know two families personally who have gone as a direct result. Didn't hear them moaning either, they just decided they don't want to be hear anymore and made plans to leave. As we're doing Smile.

Ecureuil · 17/08/2017 13:52

*here

histinyhandsarefrozen · 17/08/2017 13:53

Australia's economy is on the rise though, isn't it? Or if not, there are the compensations of life-style.

I thought everyone understood that Britain's economy will be going down the pan ("but it'll be worth it in the end")

scaryteacher · 17/08/2017 13:54

Living in Europe is basically same shit in a different place in different languages. I have been away since 2006, and only have 2.5 years to go til we come home. I cannot wait.

I look forward to not having to schlep round different supermarkets to get different things; no ID cards; being able to walk into the bank and change my address without 20 questions on have I told the Gemeente. I can move in the UK without the police turning up to check that I live there. I look forward to the bank not being shut at lunchtime, and I won't miss the practice of shops closing on a weekday if they've been open on a Saturday. I will miss the bread, beer, frites, mayonnaise and chocolate though.

Ecureuil · 17/08/2017 13:57

Haha. I've lived in France, Italy and Spain and yeah, all have had their various 'challenges'. TBH id still pick any one of them over the UK at the moment. Luckily DH and I speak all three languages so we're looking at opportunities that suit all of us as a family at the moment.

Mandysmumbun · 17/08/2017 13:57

And so I'll ask you again Mission - spent any time in Australia???

Probably not. But yep, let's not mention that absolute fucking shit storm the Brits rained down on Australia when they landed and continued to do so for a looong time. It's no wonder 'Australian's' (who were made up of British people let's not forget) behaved the way they did. It was how they were taught.

Australia and Australians are very much not like that now. And I fucking hate this shit that gets trotted out on MN from some arsehole who backpacked around Australia for 6 weeks and is suddenly an expert.

timeismovingon · 17/08/2017 13:59

We have done it and have the option to return if we want to, currently our children are at critical stages of education and I do want them to finish their education here. The thing is that I don't think people actually realise how difficult it is to emigrate to countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand etc. They don't just taken anyone they have very strict criteria and it is quite costly to even go through the first step of emigrating.

GrouchyKiwi · 17/08/2017 14:07

We have made contingency plans to move to NZ. They're only contingency because moving to the other side of the world is a massive undertaking, we love living so close to the continent, and our family is happy here. But we're in Scotland, and if the negotiations go badly and there's another IndyRef then we'll head off. As an EU citizen I'm worried about what May & the Home Office will decide re my status. Like a PP I have Permanent Residence, but that's apparently going to mean nothing at the end of this.

It's easier for us to move than most because I'm also a Kiwi, and DH works in a professional role that's always in demand in NZ.

Ktown · 17/08/2017 14:07

I do know one girl who is a great loss. But in general a lot of hot air.
One person was complaining and said that she wanted to move to Switzerland which confused me as they aren't EU.
I do understand there is an emotional response but as an EU family we feel very welcome. Fortunately I haven been affected at work despite working for an EU company.

SleepFreeZone · 17/08/2017 14:09

I know three Australians living here veto have no desire to go back due to the high cost of living and racism and one who'd love to go back but can't afford to.

HunterofStars · 17/08/2017 14:12

I'm going to emigrate but it isn't just down to Brexit. For a long time, I haven't felt like I've been able to build a decent life for myself and I'm just held back here. There's too many bad memories for me here.

I've come to the decision that life is too short to live somewhere where I'm unhappy and am going to make plans to leave within the next year.

Themostannoyingperson · 17/08/2017 14:14

Mandy - what has your rant got to do with the question though? Are you saying Australians are or aren't casually rascist?
