To ask all disabled drivers to do the following?

We shouldnt have to, of course, but:

EVERY single time you go to a car park- supermarket/shopping centre etc, to complain EVERY single time to the security/help button on the ticket machine/supermarket etc .

You know what Im talking about.

Those bloodyselfish disablist C*s who park in disabled spaces. every time.

just this morning, went early to the superkarket. car park hardly used. very few cars there. a W* in a BMW pulls into the disabled bay next to mine, and JOGS into the coffee shop there . Still there when we came out of supermarket. no badge.

I go back to supermarkt (takes me ages with my mobility issues) to complain and the sucurity guy just shrugs. ''happens all the time. we issue tickets sometimes. nothing we can do. '' I said ''you have noticessaying disabled ONLY.

an elderly person heard our exchange and came up and joined in. he said he has a blue badge and hes fed up when he goes out and all the disabled bays are taken with only half of them with blue badges displayed and he cant get a space. he said he blocked someone in once and they , on coming back to their blocked car, didnt listen to him saying they were breaking the law doing that,(punched him through his open windowdamaged his car , and the police just didnt bother to take him seriously.

anyway.

pleaswe, if you have a blue badge, just complain, EVERY SINGLE TIME till hopefully they get the message.

its not about fines, half of them arent paid anyway, why cant their cars be towed away immediatley,? and pay a much huger fine.

bloody selfish and lazy.

on a slightly smaller note, the parentys/nannies/guardians who park in P&C spaces when their kids arent even in the car, their at school/nursery etc but just cos theyve got a car seat......

boils my piss almost more than enything else.

Disabled and elderly people are NOTHING to the ''powers that be''.

I think that blue badge holders should complain if they feel the need to. Depending on where you are, it may or may not be illegal to park in a disabled space without a badge to "prove" you are entitled. On private land, it's really a matter for the landowner. A supermarket may well not want to deal with bad publicity from a legitimate disabled badge-holder being unable to park because some twat in a 4x4 has parked in the space because it's nearer the entrance, but equally they don't want to deal with the bad publicity of trying to fine someone who is legitimately disabled but for whatever reason has forgotten to display their badge.

If you make a polite complaint, perhaps the supermarket will make a point of having a quiet word with the offender. This would make most reasonable(ish) people think twice about doing it in future, and will allow the supermarket staff to make an educated guess as to whether the person needs the space or not, regardless of them having a badge or not.

A lot of people consider themselves disabled but would rather not advertise the fact more than they can help it. A disability does not mean the person is of predictable, uniform capability. Some days may be better than others, sometimes they might be in a different car. It's unreasonable to assume that just because someone doesn't have a badge today, they automatically are "not disabled enough" to need a disabled space.

None of this should be taken to suggest I support the twats who park in a disabled space without genuine need - I just think that each case needs to be judged on merit, and for that a member of staff at the supermarket (with a basic level of common sense) needs to decide. For this, they need to be informed, when it happens.

A stoma is a disability. It's unseen, you can jog but you also need to use a disabled toilet

I know what you mean though but not everyone's disability is visible.

Generally if they have the badge issued for severe mental impairment (my son does) they won't be allowed to drive. So as sole occupant in the car mentioned in the OP this wouldn't apply.

Thank your lucky stars you're not in Africa or the Middle East where people would be astonished by such a thing as disability rights.

So because other people don't have those rights yet we should just shut up and be grateful for having them? Even when people can't access them? Hmm Next you'll be telling me to eat all my dinner up because there's starving children in the world.

ginandlime · 15/08/2017 18:09

What's the point of your logical fallacy?

VladmirsPoutine · 15/08/2017 18:10

FreudianSlurp Yes, yes you should. And not be gluttonous either. Maintain reasonable portion sizes and a reasonably healthy diet toboot.

Sorry FreudianSlurp cross posted with you! Great minds think alike! Grin

DP has a BB. When parking yesterday we couldn't find a disabled spot because most of them were occupied by cars not displaying a BB. DP can't get out of the car if it's parked in normal space, so it's very inconvenient. I don't believe that all those cars were driven by BB users who for whatever reason weren't displaying them. More likely they were simply selfish bastards.

BishopBrennansArse · 15/08/2017 18:16

Oh and I'll qualify my last comment with it's not just the autism that got him the bade, it's the inability to keep himself safe and be unsupervised. As he is now there's no way the dvla will permit it for safety reasons.

I too have autism and drive. My badge was awarded for mobility reasons.

I always report missing badges. Nobody ever gives a shit. I've done the tweeting thing too. Nobody gives a shit.

I do believe there should be strong penalties for anyone not displaying a badge and that should apply yo private spaces too. As far as the 'forgetting' to display goes I'd expect a fine if I'd forgotten too so ticket away.

Reads OP, scrolls to bottom.

Squeaky wheel gets the grease... More complaining may get more action. Good luck with that. Morrison's security were quite good at kicking out non disabled drivers.

But I had a child who can walk too far for a badge but not far enough to get round the supermarket without pain. She does do dancing and running sometimes too. (PT and OT have improved things enough to get round a quick shop)

Then there is the autistic boy, more a problem of how far I can carry him whilst pushing the trolley.

mydogmymate · 15/08/2017 18:25

This isn't just about BB holders, the arrogance and lack of consideration when parking is across the board. Just look at the parking threads on here, people just don't care where they park. It's got worse since loads of traffic wardens were made redundant. As I sit here someone has blocked me in my own driveway 😡

BeyondQueenOfLists · 15/08/2017 18:26

I have a seriously dopey-away-with-the-fairies brain, and I've only managed to forget to put mine out once in the last five(ish) years. Any time I forgot to take it at all, I haven't used a space (or pay for the bridge, grr)

So I'm all for strong fines too.

GahBuggerit · 15/08/2017 18:29

I'm getting quite worried now, we've been given permission by the supermarket to park in a disabled bay because they know my mum's issues, although if she's having a rare ok-ish day then I will just park it in one of the p and c spaces instead so she can at least get in/out ok. Wondering if I should ask the shop to do us a sign or something so I can put it in the window, while I'd completely understand if we were given an earful as they aren't to know the situation I'd be a bit miffed at being given a hard time over something we've been told is ok.

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 15/08/2017 18:29

I know Pixies, somebody had decided further upthread that someone with autism probably wouldn't manage to drive and do the coffee shop alone! Just pointing out that if you've met one person with Autism, you've met one person with Autism!

No. The person upthread said that if someone's autism is such that they need a blue badge because they can't safely cross a car park, they would not be able to drive themselves around and visit a coffee shop.

TheFairyCaravan · 15/08/2017 18:34

I'm all for strong fines too.

I don't believe there's hundreds, if not thousands, of people in this country who simply forget to put their badges up when they park in BB spaces.

We went to Aldi the other day and someone without a BB had parked in a BB space, on an angle right across the hatchings which took 2 spaces out of action.

I bet the BB spaces in council carparks, where you are fined or clamped, are far less abused.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 15/08/2017 18:58

No. The person upthread said that if someone's autism is such that they need a blue badge because they can't safely cross a car park, they would not be able to drive themselves around and visit a coffee shop.

And that's wrong. It's not difficult Hmm

AwaywiththePixies27 · 15/08/2017 18:59

My DS can't safely cross a car park. He can sit down and eat with me and his Dsis.

To suggest that a person who can't do one thing can then not go on to do another task is staggeringly ignorant.

JumpingJellybeanz · 15/08/2017 19:02

No wonder disabled facilities get abused so much. Just look at the responses on this thread. OP is complaining about someone parking in a BB space WITHOUT displaying a badge. He is abusing the facilities provided for disabled people and yet posters are falling over themselves to find reasons to justify it and prove the OP unreasonable.

It's shameful.

ginandlime · 15/08/2017 19:06

No. The person upthread said that if someone's autism is such that they need a blue badge because they can't safely cross a car park, they would not be able to drive themselves around and visit a coffee shop.
That too is wrong. It's an assumption based on knowing nothing about a person and their autism. My DS has Austim and Tourettes's Syndrome. He can drive. He cannot walk across a car park due to full body tics. He can use a cafe. Again, we are all different.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 15/08/2017 19:08

He is abusing the facilities provided for disabled people and yet posters are falling over themselves to find reasons to justify it and prove the OP unreasonable.

No. People are not 'falling over themselves' to justify his behaviour Hmm they're calling someone out for a clearly disablist post which has since been deleted.

BeyondQueenOfLists · 15/08/2017 19:13

Without getting into who can do what with autism, surely it's easiest to agree to disagree (as there are people here with experience who agree that someone who requires a bb for safety reasons wouldn't generally be able to drive on their own) as there are clearly other conditions that would allow a solo adult a badge (such as the crohns example) while they are physically able to run into a shop.

Fwiw, my assessment of risk isn't ideal and is why - years before my asd diagnosis btw - I failed my driving test for risk assessment! Grin
