To expect around 6 months notice if people want you to fly to their event

Had this happen a few times - people faffing around then giving you about a months notice to buy flights to come to their event (big birthday party etc not just run of the mill weekend BBQ) things they have been talking about doing for at least a year but decide last minute the date.

It's just so annoying as we have other things planned and last minute flights are expensive for a family of 4 but they totally expect us to drop everything and come

What's considered polite notice to give when you expect people to fly to something?

A year imo?

but they totally expect us to drop everything and come

Then just tell them it's not enough notice...

Yanbu, but I would in no way feel obligated to pay for a family of four to fly over for a birthday party. Of course if you want to that's all well and good but I wouldn't be cancelling plans.

2-3 months would be nice and thats what I'd give if inviting people. In my family i've got parents in France, others in Dubai/Germany/Norway and 2-3 is enough for it all to be arranged.

I don't class a months notice as late tbh if it's just a couple of hours flight but I guess it depends on the life you have going on.

YANBU. A family member arranged a wedding in France (family all in the UK) which isn't too bad/expensive I suppose only she gave just 11 days notice for people to sort out flights/transport in another way and passports etc.
I was only one of 13 people attending (despite the fact she invited a little under a hundred)
