To think if you press the button on the crossing it should be fucking illegal to cross before you get the green man?

If you are stopping the traffic, do not cross when there is a gap in the traffic, you pressed the fucking button so you wait for the green man!

All the stopping and starting adds to the pollution and it really fucks me off when I stop and they have already crossed and are on their merry way!

It can't be just me can it that thinks people who do this are inconsiderate, selfish and rude with no thought for the environment?

Someone didn't wait for the green man at the crossing last year and got hit badly by a car

wasonthelist · 14/08/2017 17:27

BTW I might have some sympathy for the OP if they were complaining about the tossers who press the button after they cross, but the complaint makes zero sense.

user1andonly · 14/08/2017 17:27

You'd have loved the family I saw the other day who waited for the green man, crossed and then...

...smiled indulgently while their toddler pressed the button on the side they'd crossed to and strolled off full of the joys of spring!!

Shock
wasonthelist · 14/08/2017 17:28

and got hit badly by a car

Is being hit by a car ever not "badly"?

HeartburnCentral · 14/08/2017 17:28

My cousin has been left with a permanent disability because a driver ignored the red light at a pedestrian crossing and knocked my cousin down as she walked across the crossing.

As for causing pollution, if people were genuinely that concerned about the environment they would cycle, scoot or walk. It is the motorised traffic causing the pollution not the pedestrians.

DismalDaphne · 14/08/2017 17:28

Should you even be driving, with all that rage inside you?

Witsender · 14/08/2017 17:29

Pmsl. Seriously, you have to stop whether there is somewhere there or not. Why is your 30 seconds more important than mine?

Grin I love this board. Still think I'm right and you lot are wrong

those of you who are in a rush, should get up earlier, leave earlier etc

Now where's my crash hat Grin

but someone up thread said they don't care about the environment. That's unbelievable actually

OP posts:
Goldmandra · 14/08/2017 17:36

Yes! For fucks sake. If you press the button, you have to wait. I can't believe you think it's ok to then ignore it and go across when you feel like it

How does a pedestrian waiting until the lights have stopped the traffic change anything?

The traffic has stopped because the lights changed. It can go when they change back. If anything, it is helpful to cross earlier if there is an opportunity because the traffic can go again immediately the amber light begins to flash rather than having to wait until the pedestrian has cleared the crossing.

Do you really believe that pedestrians should stand and look at an empty road just in case a driver who comes along when the lights change might feel better about being inconvenienced? Confused

SaucyJack · 14/08/2017 17:36

"Are you not embarrassed that you have stopped all the traffic for nothing. I watch people like you walking away, oblivious as to what you have done"

That ^^ meme sums up my answer.

To think if you press the button on the crossing it should be fucking illegal to cross before you get the green man?
StormTreader · 14/08/2017 17:36

Blame the drivers that space themselves out so you have to wait and watch car after car going past leaving almost enough time between them for someone to cross, but not quite.

I used to not press the button, then I got sick of waiting. Now, I always press unless the road is empty.

nicenewone1 · 14/08/2017 17:36

And I have said all along I have no problem at all stopping for an actual person.

You're now bringing disability into it. Who mentioned that. not me. I have a disabled child, when she is with me we press the button. But don't worry, you won't have to stop for nothing if it's us. We wait for the green man. Because we pressed the button.

Why do you keep going on about the environment when you drive Confused

OutnumberedbyFurchesters · 14/08/2017 17:38

outnumbered which country are you in. That idea is so sensible it will never be introduced in the UK

North West England.

A puffin crossing

With kerbside detectors, used on many roads here.

After a request to cross (by button press) a kerb side detector monitors the pedestrian's presence at the crossing. Should the pedestrian cross prematurely, walk away from the crossing, or wait outside the detection area, the pedestrian's request to cross could be automatically cancelled. This is so traffic is not halted unnecessarily. An on-crossing detector ensures that the signal for vehicles remains red until the pedestrians have finished crossing (within practical limits). Unlike the pelican crossing, there is no transitional "flashing" phase.[3]

^The pedestrian phase will start at the moment all three of these conditions are fulfilled:

  • the pedestrian push button has been pressed since the end of the last pedestrian phase
  • the "Maximum Traffic Green Timer" has expired
  • the detectors indicate that a pedestrian is still waiting to cross
The "Maximum Traffic Green Timer" is started either when the pedestrian push button is pressed or when the traffic signals first turn green after the previous pedestrian phase. The latter arrangement is termed the "pre-timed Maximum Facility".[2]^
AccrualIntentions · 14/08/2017 17:38

It makes fuck all difference to you as a driver whether I press the button and wait an extra 2 minutes or however long pointlessly for the green man if there is no traffic, or if I press it, then there turns out to be no traffic and I cross.

You weren't there when I was crossing before the green man. Or I wouldn't have been crossing. What am I missing? Hmm

HeartburnCentral · 14/08/2017 17:39

I love this board. Still think I'm right and you lot are wrong
Just like most other ops on AIBU. I call BINGO!! Grin

Now where's my crash hat
You're going to need it if you choose to cross a busy junction ignoring the lights and running into oncoming traffic Grin

MummytoCSJH · 14/08/2017 17:40

'I think people who drive have no concept'
Yes, every person who has every crossed the road doesn't drive Hmm I do this and I am a driver. You would have to stop for the green light were they crossing - it makes literally no difference to you. Stop whining and continue to obey the law, or give up your driving license and car. Simple Wink

YellowLawn · 14/08/2017 17:40

If zebra crossings replaced all pelican, puffin, and toucan crossings, we would stop when someone needs to cross

round here you better not

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 14/08/2017 17:40

The traffic has stopped because the lights changed. It can go when they change back. If anything, it is helpful to cross earlier if there is an opportunity because the traffic can go again immediately the amber light begins to flash rather than having to wait until the pedestrian has cleared the crossing

Exactly

wasonthelist · 14/08/2017 17:41

OP - as many many people have pointed out, if someone presses a button but then a gap appears and they use that gap to cross it make NO DIFFERENCE and there would be NO POINT in them waiting.

What part of that logic do you dispute, exactly?

OutnumberedbyFurchesters · 14/08/2017 17:41

Italics fail... but the above also helps with disabled who may also take longer to cross the road by keeping the lights red for longer.

They also sometimes monitor traffic so that the red lights are activate at a lower traffic volume level so less drivers are inconvenienced.

GahBuggerit · 14/08/2017 17:42

I don't get the crash hat reference so Im switching between cringing for the OP that the quip doesn't make any sense and cringing for myself that Im being thick Confused

Can someone tell me who it is I need to cringe for please? Only in this context, Im obviously fine in cringing for the OP in general.......

Pestilentialone · 14/08/2017 17:42

You can't have a bingo until there is a LTB Heartburn

bloodymaria · 14/08/2017 17:48

LTB! Cancel the cheque, pom bears etc.

OP, carry on. Must be nice to have time to sit and stew about this sort of thing I suppose?
