To not buy my nearly 17 year old a beer?

We are on holiday in Austria and Germany, and dd1 aged 16 would like to have a beer. It is legal here for her to drink beer and wine at 16. So MN jury, are we being unreasonable?

Your child, your rules!
What if she bought a beer herself?

Youcanttaketheskyfromme · 13/08/2017 16:45

Well I imagine she will buy her own since here's nothing stopping her.

Gorgosparta · 13/08/2017 16:45

I would.

I dont really see a reason not to.

But thats me.

Allyg1185 · 13/08/2017 16:45

No not at all. Enjoy your holiday Smile

Youcanttaketheskyfromme · 13/08/2017 16:45

And yes you are btw.

leighdinglady · 13/08/2017 16:45

Yabu. There's a reason uk kids hit 18 and go nuts with binge drinking. A beer or wine with food is absolutely fine. It's a good example of reasonable drinking.

TyneTeas · 13/08/2017 16:46

Would you let her have a beer in the home?

And 26 year olds can drink beer and wine with meals on licensed premises here anyway, can't they?

Katinkka · 13/08/2017 16:47

Just get it and unclench.

Cheerybigbottom · 13/08/2017 16:47

YANBU

She's 17, and can buy it herself.

Laugh at her gagging on the foul taste of beer, or marvel at her ability to down her 'first' beer in 60 seconds Grin

I see nothing wrong with a beer or glass of wine for a person of 16

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 13/08/2017 16:49

I'd buy her a beer, why not? One small drink won't do any harm, and I think it's better for teenagers if their first experiences of alcohol are in a safe, family environment.

troodiedoo · 13/08/2017 16:50

I would. But if you don't then fair play.

DermotOLogical · 13/08/2017 16:50

Yabu making alcohol a forbidden fruit means it gets tried in private away from parents and bad things happen.

Let her have a beer. Much better to be in a controlled environment and get her to learn how much she can take.

BigBirdFlies · 13/08/2017 16:50

I'm not entirely opposed to her having a beer, I just wanted to see what opinions are out there. I know she has been served at a party before.

Let her have a beer. Better she learns to drink in a social environment, rather than binge drinking (Which makes you far from sociable).

Farmerswife4life1984 · 13/08/2017 16:58

I would I fact I let my 13 and 14 year old have a glass of wine or a beer at xmas when we all have our lunch or if we are at a wedding etc ( only been to one this year )

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 13/08/2017 17:01

I would and have let my ds's drink beer at that age.

kel1234 · 13/08/2017 17:02

I think you are. I would much rather my children drink in front of me, so I know how much and what they've had, and where it's come from. Instead of them getting it from somewhere else behind my back.
(I had my first drink at 8, so)

IAmTheDragon · 13/08/2017 17:02

Yeah, buy it.

PhilTheSahd · 13/08/2017 17:03

I can't see anything wrong with her having a drink while you are there to supervise - in fact I'd say that's the ideal way for a person to have there first few drinks. Perhaps you could teach her how to drink responsibly?

I thought the typo in TyneTeas first comment was a deliberate commentary on how age alone doesn't set people's ability to drink responsibly lol - there are 26 year olds in this world who get stupidly drunk and put themselves in danger. I'd bet not many of those do it on holiday with parents though!

drinkingtea · 13/08/2017 17:03

She can buy herself a beer - perfectly legal in Germany and Austria within certain limits (not after a certain time of night I think).

biffyboom · 13/08/2017 17:05

Yabu

coriliavijvaad · 13/08/2017 17:07

If it's legal there and she wants to try it then I would certainly agree if it were me.
