For worrying about double dose cough medicine and my 3 year old...

First off, I'm a total worrier about all things health related Grin

My DS woke up with a really nasty cough this morning and I said to my DH (who got up with him) that once DS had finished a drink to give him 2.5mls of his cough medicine.

About three hours later I realised DH had actually given 5mls instead of 2.5mls.

DS seems fine but my friend said I should ring Poison Control as he may be toxic because of it Hmm

My DH said I would be overreacting.

Would I be??

Yes.
5mls is fine and within safety. Most it could do is make him sleepy.

Rossigigi · 13/08/2017 11:30

He'll be fine as a once off providing the medication is suitable for his age. I'd just leave the next dose until later this afternoon.

He could drink the whole bottle and he would be fine.

He'll be fine. Cough medicine doesn't actually do anything for coughs though - just soothes the throat

Thanks everyone!!! I feel much better now Smile

He'll be fine- people I used to babysit for used to always give their baby a double dose of 'will make baby drowsy' cough medicine before I came- was the easiest money I ever earned! This happened weekly and I still know the 'baby' (she's in her 20s now) and she was/is fine.

Hmm sounds like they went to the Karen Matthews School of Parenting.

It's just glycerin so I wouldn't worry

Ameliablue · 13/08/2017 12:33

That age it should just be a glycerin Syrup so not likely to cause problems. If it isn't just a glycerin one then I would seek medical advice.

Writerwannabe83 · 13/08/2017 12:48

I've just looked down the list of ingredients and it's seems to just be glycerin, glucose, sucrose and colourings/flavourings.

I'm such a panicker Grin

If you are worried just ring a chemist and ask them.
