To eat a burger with my hands?

Happytobefree17 · 12/08/2017 16:32

In a gastro pub?

My friend is aghast that I didn't use cutlery. Thinks I'm some sort of Neanderthal for eating with my hands. Grin

Who is right?

I witnessed a woman eating a big mac with cutlery the other week wasnt one of your friends was it? Shock

SenecaFalls · 13/08/2017 17:50

In my family we call that Law and Order pizza after the TV show because the detectives were always grabbing a quick slice on the run.

crazycatgal · 13/08/2017 17:52

I always inwardly sigh when someone uses a knife and fork to eat a normal burger. I always use a knife and fork in somewhere like pizza express where a pizza is uncut, but if the pizza is in slices then pick it up and eat it.

bemusedmoose · 13/08/2017 17:59

You know what is unreasonable.... Expecting anyone to eat a burger with cutlery!!

Burger is finger food wherever it's served.

Blu99 · 13/08/2017 17:59

Burgers and chips is finger food.

Using cutlery for everything is neurotic

DarkDarkNight · 13/08/2017 17:59

I've never quite got over a friend from Uni eating a burger with a knife and fork. It was a bizarre sight. I sometimes cut mine in half to are it more manageable but I wouldn't use a knife and fork to eat what is essentially a sandwich.

angelfacecuti75 · 13/08/2017 18:00

I eat it with my hands.

Happytobefree17 · 13/08/2017 18:07

Can I just add that it was the juiciest, yummiest burger I've had in a long while! BUT... it was served on a wooden board, WTF?

WHY is this a trend?! It's so manky and gross and just so so wrong Angry

I'd always use cutlery to eat a burger in a restaurant but that's mainly because I'm such a messy eater I'd have it slopped down my front in about 2 seconds. But in the house I always eat pizza, fish and chips and kebabs with cutlery. Just tastes nicer.

HemlockStarglimmer · 13/08/2017 19:03

I was taught that if you can't hold the food in one hand then you should use a knife and fork.

Purplealienpuke · 13/08/2017 19:22

Imo do what makes you happy... hands, knives & forks... & maybe stop lambasting other people's choices?? Unless etiquette police is actually a thing now 🤔

ClandestineAdulation · 13/08/2017 19:32

The wooden board trend is soooo annoying! For the record, I'd probably cut the burger in half, if only to make it easier to eat and so the contents doesn't fall out quite so easily!

fatimashortbread · 13/08/2017 19:34

Burgers, hot dogs, pizza and asparagus should be definitely eaten with your fingers. Game birds too if they are small (quail, partridge)

limitedperiodonly · 13/08/2017 19:36

Where do you stand on mopping up gravy with bread?

I eat pizza with my hands after cutting it with one of those little razor wheely things. I do the same thing with burgers after cutting them in half with a knife. The chips too

Lovingit81 · 13/08/2017 19:38

Knife.....fork......burger????????? Confused

RainyApril · 13/08/2017 19:40

I'm all for mopping, though not in public. But then I also cut my soup roll in half before buttering, which is hugely common apparently.

Alpacaandgo · 13/08/2017 19:47

Burgers are definitely pick up food. Like hot dogs, chicken wings and sandwiches. No matter where you are! If it's a particularly large burger I'd probably cut it in half so it's easier to eat. I have never seen anyone eat a burger with a knife and fork!

limitedperiodonly · 13/08/2017 19:54

fatimashortbread I agree but I never order things like quails or shell-on prawns in restaurants because I hate having greasy hands and a finger bowl is never enough. So I have it at home where I can quickly rinse my hands.

Friends from Rome always take us to a fantastic fish restaurant on the coast. I think it's a place called Ostia. There are a few of them overlooking the sea with planes heading to the airport every 30 seconds Grin. It's about 40 minutes' drive from the centre if the traffic is good.

Anyway, they order everything and we just eat. I could see their funny looks the first time I carefully took the shells off the prawns with a knife and fork, but they were too nice to say anything. I had to say I knew it looked weird, but if I didn't do it, I'd be going backwards and forwards to the loo because I can't stand sticky fingers. I've become very speedy at it. They're quite impressed now.

limitedperiodonly · 13/08/2017 20:09

I used to mop only at home RainyApril but was liberated when I learned that there is a phrase for it in Italian - fare la scarpetta - which translates as 'to make the little shoe.'

Apparently it's okay in all but the poshest restaurants there. I've done it in some posh restaurants too. I guess I've been judged. Oh well.

I tear bread, but only because I've learned that that's what you're 'supposed' to do. I don't butter it because I save it for mopping up gravy. When my MIL comes to stay we go to a French restaurant that serves a 30g sealed round of butter with the bread. She eats the lot and sometimes calls for more bread. She loves nice butter and says this is one of the best she's ever tasted. She actually looks forward to the butter as much as the rest of the food Smile

Sparklyglitter · 13/08/2017 20:17

Neither wrong or right! Just been to a gastro pub this afternoon two people had burgers one ate with fingers and the other with cutlery no biggy in my opinion either way! 😀 Xx

Alexcor · 13/08/2017 20:31

Image of miners eating Cornish pasties with knife & fork! I send wood plates back, hygiene, though last restaurant had plastic effect wood!

FrenchRoast · 13/08/2017 20:39

If mopping up was not the intention, why serve bread and no butter with my very lovely Italian salad at a fairly upmarket restaurant in Southern France yesterday...mopping up amazing oils and flavours with good bread - can that ever be a bad thing - surely no one would object?

sashadasher · 13/08/2017 21:35

Well in Italy they fold the pizza segments in half topping side together so only dough shows and eat with hands.Italian waiter showed me on my 1st hol to Italy as young adult and restaurant was quite posh.I looked round and everyone ate it like that so no mess...As for burgers if large cut in half and eat with hands, gastro pub or not unless it has no bun and has lettuce instead.....blood hipstersConfusedTo me a gastro pub is just a pub that isn't a chain and it's not afternoon tea is it

sashadasher · 13/08/2017 21:49

.....and I wish they would do away with wooden serving boards for steak and burgers etc.I mean to me it's much more hygienic on a plate, how do they get a piece of wood properly clean.gastro pubs are the prime culprits for using these as they look ever so trendy, they aren't they are just breeding ground for germs stop it .Puts me right off.I often wonder if I'm starting to turn into Victor Mildred in women form Grin.AIBU will a few old stray bacteria from yesterday's burger or steak hurt me?...and the op's friend worrys about using a knife and fork

pollymere · 13/08/2017 22:40

Actually it's pretentious to use a knife and fork to eat a burger and I would assume someone doing so to be ill mannered or trying to "better themselves".
