To eat a burger with my hands?

Happytobefree17 · 12/08/2017 16:32

In a gastro pub?

My friend is aghast that I didn't use cutlery. Thinks I'm some sort of Neanderthal for eating with my hands. Grin

Who is right?

Hyacinth Bouquet is alive and well, we'll have a few ladies fainting soon!!!! "Oh Mr Bennet!"

IrritatedUser1960 · 13/08/2017 08:06

It is perfectly acceptable to eat a burger with your hands as long as you do it with confidence OP.
My godmother was a Lady with a stately home and as a child sent me for etiquette lessons.
She would have thought eating a burger with a knife and fork a bit "common" (sorry) Grin

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 13/08/2017 08:12

My choice of restaurant is my business, no?

If you were a vegetarian you wouldn't go to Gaucho Grill.

I eat chips and pizza with my fingers. Something stew-y, no.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 13/08/2017 08:13

I eat the flatbread separately, with my fingers.

I eat the curry with knife and fork, I don't dip or scoop.
Works for me.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 13/08/2017 08:15

Having though about it though, no, I don't eat curry ofter, every couple of months, if that.

I do like dhal, but that's a spoon type of dish.

CosmicPineapple · 13/08/2017 08:21

So if you went to pizza hut and everyone was eating with their fingers you would be fine with it but at an indian resturant where eating with fingers/flat breads is cultural you would be offended Hmm Really Shock

Cailleach666 · 13/08/2017 08:23

I do like dhal, but that's a spoon type of dish.

Not for millions- it is eaten with the fingers- no cutlery.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 13/08/2017 08:25

Yes, pizza has a dry base it's way to pick up. It's not a something you have to scoop out.

It's a big difference.

CosmicPineapple · 13/08/2017 08:30

Not really. Your fingers are touching the pizza before you put it in your mouth where as scooping curry with a flatbread your fingers are not touching the curry just the bread. Like it is with a pizza.

Do you think people scoop up curry with their fingers? Confused

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 13/08/2017 08:34

How do you do it with rice though?

Cailleach666 · 13/08/2017 08:36

chardonnay- and apologies if this may offend- some people touch curry with their fingers when they eat with rice and no cutlery.

You may need a lie down.

bbcessex · 13/08/2017 08:37

I think your friend is wrong, but I would eat it with cutlery as I like to have a bit of the salad, coleslaw etc on my fork at the same time.

I also eat pizza with knife & fork for the same reason.

Would eat McDonalds-type with fingers as no side salad etc.

I'd eat most things with a knife & fork if I could

CosmicPineapple · 13/08/2017 08:37

You tear off a decent chunk of flatbread. . Hold it in your fingers so it creates a pocket then you scoop/grab the rice and curry from your plate. Put it in your mouth. Chew. Then swallow.

sandgrown · 13/08/2017 08:41

New burger restaurant in Preston called "We don't give a fork". I guess you eat your burgers with your hands .

CosmicPineapple · 13/08/2017 08:42

some people touch curry with their fingers when they eat with rice and no cutlery.

This is me Calli Grin
I am nowhere near as elegant as my Indian and Asian friends and tend to get it everywhere.
My long suffering African stepgran has spent years trying to get me to eat her curried goat neatly with flatbread, she just gives me a large napkin now 😁

Winterview · 13/08/2017 08:44

I have been to many restaurants where no cutlery is supplied. Even curry and rice has to be eaten with hands

Me too, though not in the UK. And they provide bread instead of cutlery!

I think best to be guided by whether or not they give you cutlery. McDonalds- use hands. Gormet Burger or gastropub where you have a plate and cutlery- cut it up and use cutlery. Put a small piece of burger and salad on fork, chew, then tear off part of the bun with hands. If you look around at other diners you'll see very few picking up the whole burger!

topcat2014 · 13/08/2017 08:46

My restaurants of choice have laminated menus, with pictures, and you pay at the bar first - but even so I can't recall seeing people eating burgers with hands!

I will have to carry out a survey next time we rarely every sunday go.

Cailleach666 · 13/08/2017 08:49

Curried goat sounds amazing.

When I lived in a no cutlery country I had to sit on my left hand too so as to cause no offence by using it for eating!

lynmilne65 · 13/08/2017 08:53

Personally I have never eaten fried onion rings with cutlery!!!!

lynmilne65 · 13/08/2017 08:55

mummaboys

No !!!

CosmicPineapple · 13/08/2017 08:55

Curried goat sounds amazing.

Like you would not believe.

You pop round to grans for a brew and within 20 minutes you have a full table of amazing food. She is a stereotypical African gran and really is happiest when she is feeding you.
She and her friends provided all the food for my wedding and 13 years on even though the marriage has ended people still talk about the food. Actually I dont think we had cutlery and people just ate with fingers/bread. I know I did.

Would you like at invite to grans Calli Grin

Rhubarbginisnotasin · 13/08/2017 09:10

I only ever eat a burger with cutlery. Even at home. In fact I use cutlery to eat almost everything. Its nothing to do with etiquette. Its mostly to do with my shaky hands and bad eyesight.

Im not bothered in the slightest what others do.

DameSquashalot · 13/08/2017 09:11

I always start eating my burgers with my hands and move to cutlery when they start falling apart. It's never the same.

I thought it was so strange when I first saw burgers being eaten with a knife and fork.

notevernotnevernotnohow · 13/08/2017 09:23

I would hate to end up in a restaurant where everyone eats curry with their fingers

Wow. Not travelled much, have you?

notevernotnevernotnohow · 13/08/2017 09:24

Italians eat pizza with a knife and fork

Ha, ha! No.
