To eat a burger with my hands?

Happytobefree17 · 12/08/2017 16:32

In a gastro pub?

My friend is aghast that I didn't use cutlery. Thinks I'm some sort of Neanderthal for eating with my hands. Grin

Who is right?

I can figure out the need for a knife when eating either a burger or a pizza, but not a fork.

Only time a fork might come in is if it is a giant tall burger and bits need to be removed to reduce the height to jaw size.

CosmicPineapple tell your gran I think she sounds awesome.

grecian100 · 13/08/2017 10:32

My ds (18) was at his friend's house recently and was offered a scones and cinnamon rolls. He declined but was then amused that they used a knife and fork to eat them with Grin

That's so wrong. Apparently there some people out there who use a knife and fork with croissants too.

Jux · 13/08/2017 11:28

Please may I visit your gran, too, Cosmic? I can bring flowers, wine and chocs or almost anything else. I might give her my firstborn........

CosmicPineapple · 13/08/2017 11:32

Jux the more the merrier as far as gran is concerned.
Bring your appetite its all she wants.
Oh and tell her its the best curried goat ever....it actually is but she loves the praise. She will answer "well if course it is child I have been making it for 82 years" shes 80 this October Hmm Grin

I'm seriously cringing at the thought of anyone eating a burger or pizza with a knife and fork. I don't care what kind of restaurant you're in, neither are supposed to be eaten in that way. If you can't eat food in the way that it is supposed to be eaten then you have no business ordering that type of food in public.

GottaGetThisDone · 13/08/2017 11:36

I don't like messy hands or mouth when eating, I go through loads of napkins/kitchen roll but I do eat a burger with my hands - however I use a knife and fork to eat ribs as just can't handle the mess. A sign of well cooked ribs for me is leaving a clean bone after using cutlery Grin

TinklyLittleLaugh · 13/08/2017 11:45

When I lived in Birmingham 30 years ago most Indian restaurants expected you to eat the food without cutlery, using the bread. Not sure if they still do

RainyApril · 13/08/2017 11:46

If Debretts say it's ok to eat pizza with your hands, it's ok to eat pizza with your hands.

RainyApril · 13/08/2017 11:48

Although their guide to eating difficult food does not mention burgers sadly

AccrualIntentions · 13/08/2017 12:35

BoggledMind oh get a grip. Presumably the waiter or waitress bringing me a set of cutlery with my burger has "no business" doing so as well?

AccrualIntentions · 13/08/2017 12:36

The anti-cutlery inverse snobbery on this thread has become way more extreme than anything the OP's friend (who also needs to get a fucking grip) said/did.

I lived in Mauritius for about 8 or 9 years and we were often invited to Indian weddings where it was the done thing to eat the food off large banana leaves with your hands. It was great fun, unfortunately a lot of european people would beckon over the waiter and ask for a fork.
In my opinion 'when in Rome'. It's good to try new things.

Sallystyle · 13/08/2017 14:17

There's a proper way to eat burgers. You eat the bottom roll first on its own or spread some sauce on it. You flip the burger over and eat the rest with a fork and knife. I have no idea why I eat them this way but I can't bring myself to eat it normally. Pizza is knife and fork too.

GoogleSinger · 13/08/2017 16:50

"This thread is eye opening. I must live in a city of Hyacinth Buckets then because most people seem to be using knife and fork to eat burgers and pizzas in restaurants as far as I can recall. Hell, I used a knife and fork for a grilled cheese sandwich last week and nobody looked appalled."

Me too. I'd love to feel comfortable enough to eat Pizza, chips and burgers without cutlery but have never seen anyone do this at a restaurant. The top bun usually comes as then it's easier to cut through a nice burger.

I hate eating chips with a fork but do it when I'm out and about.

The very best burger I have ever had was from a shack just outside Perth. Burger buns, burger, cheese and runny fried egg. Heavenly!. Ate it sitting around a bonfire in front of said shack surrounded by easy going Aussies with my hands with zero self consciousness. Heaven.

Nancy91 · 13/08/2017 16:54

If they eat pizza or burgers with cutlery, they are no friends of mine

ilovepixie · 13/08/2017 17:05

The first time we took my granny to McDonalds she asked where the knives and forks were!

ilovepixie · 13/08/2017 17:15

I'm so craving a burger now!

Nimmykins · 13/08/2017 17:19

Were you out with my mother? Smile

Sallystyle · 13/08/2017 17:22

My nails are long. It's just not nice to eat anything with my hands that can get messy.

Organisedchaosalways · 13/08/2017 17:24

Cutlery is overrated...burgers, chips, pizza all should be eaten with hands

Minxmumma · 13/08/2017 17:39

I would use my hands and just for lots of amusement my Aunt always ate Jam Doughnuts with a knife and fork! Grin
