hi,

long time lurker needing advice on a weird situation

i have had my current phone number since january 2016. i had my number before that for 5/6 years. my current number is similar to 07 100 212 313 (somewhat a pattern)

over the past month i have had 100s of calls off withheld numbers, around 6 people on mobile numbers calling & texting, various welsh landline numbers calling and leaving voicemail...all for the same person. 'claire baker' apparently.

i get called at all hours and literally get bombarded with these calls..i am beyond frustrated. once i had 40 calls in the space of around 20 minutes.

i don't want to make this post super long but basically i have been telling the caller they have the wrong number, blocking these numbers, placing my phone on do not disturb etc but the calls keep coming in. it's all people genuinely trying to reach 'claire' (such as 'claire its X call me')

i just feel harassed at this point. one person literally text around 6 times asking for claire at 4am and calling, i said they had the wrong number and blocked them,then they started to contact me off another number the next day. ( same name) it's like they genuinely can't accept that i'm not bloody claire

her probation officer, solicitor and doctor have all called me and left voicemails. i rung her solicitor back and informed them that they have the wrong number, they replied 'oh are you sure? she called us last night on our emergency line and gave this number, are you sure?'. of course i'm bloody sure

this annoyed me more as it confirmed that this isn't a random 1 off wrong number, someone is constantly giving out my number as their own. has she not realised??? i thought this would stop soon, but i had a voicemail from her doctor at 3pm today.

anyway, what made me create this post: i just had multiple texts from facebook asking to verify my number. stupidly i clicked the link and my # was added to a new fb account with 0 friends/posts. all my friends/fam/contacts came up in suggestions, can only assume fb analysed my contacts. this weirded me out so i managed to take over the account, remove my number and send the account to permanent deletion. i don't want anyone that knows me have this random account come up under my number in their notifications and think i'm the biggest weirdo making fake accounts!! can only assume that it's the same people that made this fake fb account

it's such a weird situation and i'm sick of my number being hijacked. what should i do?

i don't think its possible for a number to be assigned twice. i think the only thing i can do is change my number which i don't really want to do, especially as these calls are a recent development in the length i've had the number

i'm annoyed by the constant calls and texts for her. i get around 5-20 a day. at all times, from people that borderline harass my line. also this person/her friends seem shady and not people that i want to associate with. one of them left me a voicemail and it was incoherent, basically sounded like heavy breathing down the phone

what should i do?

Tell your phone company and Get a new number.

As above I think you should get your number changed.

If the doctor and solicitor are local I would have suggested doing a fb search for her but you say it looks like she's tried to have a fb account but you've deleted it. Maybe wait a week and see if she opens another account, she can only do this with her correct number because as you've experienced she has to give them the right number to verify her account.

It doesn't sound sinister it sounds like she has genuinely got the wrong number in her head.

she is in wales it seems, i'm in SE england. her name is 'claire baker' but the fb account was under 'jodie davies' and just seemed like a fake account

I'd be calling her doctors and solicitors and replying to those who text saying this is not Claire. Can you please please tell her she's giving out the wrong number to people, My number, and I'm getting calls and texts all day every day for her!

Could just be one digit wrong or two digits mixed round the wrong way from yours.

I'd of thought someone would get the message to her to resolve it! All she needs to do is call a friend off her phone when with them to get her number. Strange one.

If her name really is claire baker from wales she even has two facebook accounts in that name.

She's learned 'her' number wrong and accidentally gives out yours instead. If change phone number if I were you.

Id stsrt telling the dr and solicitor and probation officer that im leaving town or taking drugs or going to do myself in. Ambulance and police at her front door may prompt her to remember her number

Tell the next person to ring (if possible) that when they see her next to tell her she's giving out the wrong number. Surely one of these people know where she lives.

Personally I'd change my number if possible.

Did her probation officer leave a number? if so call them back and tell them whats going on, they'll have an address and see her regularly so be able to tell her to stop giving it out. The facebook in a different name is probably in case her probation officer asks to check her facebook.

I feel your pain ...

I was given the number which must've belonged to an Indian man not long before me .

I still over 2 years later get calls and WhatsApp calls for Mr Singh . He must've had a company of some sort and I get asked numerous times , are you sure?
Erm yes I'm sure , I'm an English woman not an Indian man !!! I get more calls for him than I do myself.

I suggest changing your number because as I've discovered it doesn't end .

This happened to me with a landline number several years ago, except it was a business advertising itself using our phone number. It was even in the yellow pages. I complained to all the sites carrying the advert and the yellow pages sent me £40 compensation. Used it to buy an answering machine and recorded a message explaining that it was a residential number, not a business etc. People still left messages for the business. Because people are dumb. I think when a number is cut off for whatever reason they are recycled, so your number may well have been hers at some point in the past. I would just get a new one if I were you, tbh.

I've just searched google to see if anyone else has had this. Last night I got a call from a no caller ID no on my mobile, normally I never answer these but as I'm selling some things online I answered it. It was a guy with a southern accent and it transpires he was after Claire Baker!! I told him I wasn't Claire, no I didn't meet him last night, no I won't tell you who I am, asked him to delete my no and he asked "why, can I not call you again?" At this point I asked what for and then proceeded to hang up. I didn't get any more calls but it weirded me out a little, surely you call a wrong no you say sorry and hang up??
