To think it's cheeky to apply for an Irish passport because of brexit?

Just that really.

OP posts:

To be fair to them, it did take 20 pages before the remainers started personal attacks, normally it's around page 6.

I think I’ve sussed your MO now.

Make a silly argument, completely ignore people who pick holes in your argument, dismiss all evidence which doesn’t support your argument as “fake news”, and if all else fails, just change the subject.

A4710Rider · 07/06/2018 17:31

Vote to take away people's rights to move abroad. Then tell those who object to having their rights taken away to move abroad

Remainer Logic.

There isn't a magic shield that's being erected over the EU. You will still be able to go and live in EU countries after Brexit.

Strongmummy · 07/06/2018 17:33

@rider - you have absolutely zero idea of how easy it will be to move to the EU post brexit. Because THERE’S NO DEAL ON THE TABLE!!!

A4710Rider · 07/06/2018 17:34

We elect MPs to make important decisions for us. Referendums are absolutely NOT the norm, nor should they be. If Cameron had put the vote to parliament we would not be talking about this now because it would have been voted out for being a ridiculous idea

Of course we wouldn't, because the EU and it's mechanisms only benefit the middle class.

Maybe we should just have another vote and ask the working class not to vote, yeah?

A4710Rider · 07/06/2018 17:35

You see, that would be good, if it wasn't entirely bollocks.

Wearelocal · 07/06/2018 17:36

OP I don't care what you think. My family are entitled to Irish passports so we have them. We didn't feel the need previously.

lostinsunshine · 07/06/2018 17:36

Entitled to. Will do. Voted Remain. Lost. No one takes my daughter's rights off her.

LoveInTokyo · 07/06/2018 17:37

It is literally what you have been doing all afternoon.

TheMonkeyMummy · 07/06/2018 17:37

In our host country we just qualified to apply for passports.
Am absolutely doing it. Felt no need before Brexit.

DN4GeekinDerby · 07/06/2018 17:37

Well, we kinda can get an idea of how easy it will be to move to an EU country by seeing how non-EU migrants can move to whichever country. Do people think the countries are going to have a different, specifically more difficult path for Brits?

Wearelocal · 07/06/2018 17:38

Exactly right, lostinsunshine.

keyboardkate · 07/06/2018 17:46

The division and often downright derision shown to people of an opposite view is disgusting.

To think UK has come to this, when so many other pressing social issues require attending to is just mad.

A lot, and I mean a lot of taxpayer money is going into this. FGS a new Department has been set up for starters.

But my money is on the Sir Humphreys, they know the score and actually run the country TBH. Watch this space for whistleblowers.

Strongmummy · 07/06/2018 17:48

Please provide evidence that EU ONLY supports the middle class? Then provide evidence that the economic fall out of Brexit will NOT effect the working class the most . You are also making the very mistaken assumption that every working class person voted leave.

MimpiDreams · 07/06/2018 17:51

Please provide evidence that EU ONLY supports the middle class?

They brought in paid holidays for all employees, the middle class obsessed feckers.

MimpiDreams · 07/06/2018 17:52

I'm working class. I would have voted remain if I were allowed to vote.

A4710Rider · 07/06/2018 17:52

Please provide evidence that EU ONLY supports the middle class

I didn't say that, I said it benefits the middle class.

LoveInTokyo · 07/06/2018 17:54

Well, we kinda can get an idea of how easy it will be to move to an EU country by seeing how non-EU migrants can move to whichever country.

In many cases, with considerably more difficulty. In France it’s pretty difficult to get a job on a local contract if you are American, for example. So unless your company transfers you or you get a cushy expat job and someone else sorts out all the visa admin, it’s quite difficult. You can’t just rock up and look for a job. You need a visa. The right type of visa. And some jobs can only be given to a non EU citizen if there are no EU citizens suitable for the post. If you’re here on a spousal visa it can sometimes take the best part of a year to renew it, during which time you’re not allowed to leave the country except with special dispensation. Every time you need to do something regarding your visa or your carte de séjour you have to go to a public administration office somewhere, queue up for hours, deal with an unhelpful public official and often be turned away because you’re missing one vital piece of paper which wasn’t on the list of papers they asked you to bring when you looked at their website. If you’re working, you can expect to have to take several days’ holiday a year for the privilege of doing this sort of thing.

Do people think the countries are going to have a different, specifically more difficult path for Brits?

No, I would expect it to be something like what I described above.

LoveInTokyo · 07/06/2018 18:00

As for the other side of the coin, you only need to look at how the UK treats non-EU citizens to see that EU citizens in the UK have every reason to be worried.

Families being forced to live apart because the British spouse doesn’t earn enough money to be able to bring their non EU spouse to the UK. Non EU spouses being deported despite being married to a British citizen for 30 years because they went back to their country of origin for too many years and they lost their indefinite leave to remain in the UK. A 10% error rate in applications processed by the Home Office.

Is it really any wonder that the EU don’t think Theresa May’s assurances are good enough and want people’s existing rights to be preserved and guaranteed indefinitely?

I wouldn’t trust Theresa May or the British government further than I could throw them.

Costacoffeeplease · 07/06/2018 18:02

I couldn't bring myself to take another passport but that's just me.

Good for you, no one is forcing you Hmm

Strongmummy · 07/06/2018 18:02

@rider, question remains the same. Provide evidence that the EU only benefits the middle class. You’re clutching at straws

MimpiDreams · 07/06/2018 18:05

I think they're in a worse situation than we are. The EU is looking out for all of us. The UK is looking out for itself. I think we'll be better taken care of than our counterparts in the UK.

LoveInTokyo · 07/06/2018 18:08

I think we'll be better taken care of than our counterparts in the UK.

Who knows?

I’m married to a French man and my employer has said that if I need a visa at some point they’ll sort it out. Luckily I’m happy in my job because I might find it difficult to get a different one.

Hopefully that will be enough to tide me over until I’m eligible for citizenship.

A lot of people are in a much more precarious position though.

@Myheartbelongsto
Don't blame the diaspora on me. That's a very English response, I know Wink

I will try and keep this short and sweet. Who do you think benefits from the influx of skilled tradespeople into the UK, like plumbers, for example, who are able to under cut existing competition?

Does it benefit Mrs & Mr Smith who rent privately in a not very well to do part of town. Or does it benefit Mr and Mrs Smythe who decide to have a new downstairs bathroom installed.

My and Mrs Smyth have 4 buy to let properties in town, they are happy they can keep them full, what with all the EU migrants moving in. Mrs and Mrs Smith are unhappy that their rent has gone up again.

But yeah, let's not give a shit about Mrs and Mr Smith.

You'd have to be willfully blind to see that the EU does feck all for most of the working classes.
