How often do you clean out your fridge?

Am realising I might be a bit skanky. Been to a couple of friends lately and when invited to fetch things from fridge found it sparking clean. I do clean mine fully, shelves out, etc once in a blue moon every couple of months or so, maybe less but sometimes more often. I wipe at obvious muck as needed and pull out the stuff that has mould growing on it or veg are now identifiable is out of date more often. AIBU? Preparing to be flamed for this....

BarbaraofSeville no way would I wipe down milk bottle (in the days when I had a milkman). I don't lick the milk bottle or anything so can't see why someone would do that. Surely lots of other people pick it up too during course of day. Also, just wiping moves germs around unless she's using anti-bac. Odd. Said by OP who hasn't got the best fridge hygiene history.
Pleeeease post your pic Barbara Grin
I won't judge you - mine was quite skanky.

Weekly after clearing and before food delivery arrives.

elQuintoConyo · 14/08/2017 07:28

Sean Connery was a milkman before being an actor. I'd give him a lick and a wipe down. I'd ignore the bottles Grin

Cailleach666 · 14/08/2017 07:53

Never.

That's OHs job.

Ragwort · 14/08/2017 07:56

Every couple of months or so - obviously wiping up any spills and do clean the milk shelf once a week or so.

Just realised I have never cleaned the outside fridge since we moved here - 8 years ago Grin.

No wonder there are so many threads on housework when some of you have such high standards.

ShutUpBaz · 14/08/2017 07:59

Fridge at home, once a month maybe? I do wipe spillages though.

At work, where I run a kitchen, my fridges and freezers are fully stripped out and cleaned minimum once a week. Without fail.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 14/08/2017 08:13

Once a week before I put the shopping away.

But what on earth is a "deep clean" of a fridge? Confused Each week, I empty it, wipe down all the shelves with anti-bac, get rid of any out-of-date food, empty and wash the veg drawer..

What do you deep cleaners do to it? Does it involve haz-mat suits?!?

FinallyHere · 14/08/2017 08:15

Any time it needs it. HTH.

FindoGask · 14/08/2017 08:16

I'm about the same as you, OP. But I love looking in the fridge after I have given it a full clean - not to get food out even, I just like to bask in the pristine glow on my way past.

kmc1111 · 14/08/2017 08:17

About every 6 months.

We don't eat meat so there's never any leakages from that, and no fruit or veg ever has time to go rotten. Everything else is kept in sealed packages/Tupperware containers. The only thing that leaks is feta in oil (everytime!), so if I've forgotten to put it in another container that gets wiped up, but otherwise there's nothing to really clean. There's never any sort of grime when I do the 6 month clean, but I use a nice smelling detergent that makes the fridge smell extra fresh for a few weeks.

I do make sure everything's clean before it's put in the fridge. I've seen a lot of people, for instance, put a sauce bottle with sauce running down the side straight back in the fridge, or put overflowing plates of food in uncovered. I wouldn't do that, so there's nothing that can make a mess really.

WhataHexIgotinto · 14/08/2017 08:18

As soon as the food starts to leave my its own accord.

I mean, ALL the time obvs.

abigailgabble · 14/08/2017 09:03

the help spot cleans on demand and takes it all apart to dishwash maybe every 4-6 months. they were much more enthusiastic about fridge cleaning in old house with brand new fridge. this slightly manky fridge is somehow better if ignored. (note in this house I am my help)

RudeDog · 14/08/2017 09:15

When I remember- I did find a mushy green pepper yesterday in the drawer - it was grim.....

DH saw me cleaning it out once - he asked me if it was the first time I had ever done it - we've had the fridge for 15 years! ......eeer no (he's clueless)

HappydaysArehere · 14/08/2017 09:19

I take the salad/veg drawers out. Take every thing out and wipe out. I do this every week before adding anything else. Other than that, I wipe around as needed.

BathshebaNessling · 14/08/2017 09:29

I have lived in my current house about four years. I have cleaned the fridge once. I'm building up to defrosting the freezer - it's my first time and I'm a little nervous...

kittytom · 14/08/2017 09:45

Hardly ever. Maybe before someone comes to cat sit (annually!). I clean the fridge at work more.

Stressedoutandfedup · 14/08/2017 11:04

About once a month

ChipInTheSugar · 14/08/2017 11:41

I did mine this morning because it was empty (post-hols). Shelves don't come out which is a pain; there's cracks on the internal back 'wall' (rented property otherwise I'd buy a new one), and the drain hole at the back was minging Envy

Loads of imprints on the back wall from packaging too which don't seem to want to scrub off Confused Might try the steam cleaner on those ...

Elendon · 14/08/2017 12:07

I wipe clean my fridge often, and do a big dishwasher job once a month. However, I've moved into a house with no dishwasher connection (going in this Thursday, CANNOT WAIT), but have also decided to get a new fridge freezer. I am surprised there was so much to clean in this appliance, despite my efforts to keep it clean. It's going today though.

Farewell old ff, welcome new one! with an LED light and clear freezer boxes

Elendon · 14/08/2017 15:14

New fridge/freezer has just arrived and said goodbye to the old one.

On reading the instructions it says never to steam clean. Risk of electrical shock!

Never put flammable propellants in your fridge.

Never store carbonated drinks in the freezer compartment.

However, there are no instructions about the cleaning.

mummymummums · 14/08/2017 22:09

Well that didn't take long. My fridge is mucky again since I cleaned it last week. Not happy. And no one at my BBQ even looked in it. Won't clean that again in a hurry
I blame the sheer volume of stuff I shoved in, and I blame DH for banging the desserts around till they stuck to the sides. No more pristine fridge for me....
