How often do you clean out your fridge?

Am realising I might be a bit skanky. Been to a couple of friends lately and when invited to fetch things from fridge found it sparking clean. I do clean mine fully, shelves out, etc once in a blue moon every couple of months or so, maybe less but sometimes more often. I wipe at obvious muck as needed and pull out the stuff that has mould growing on it or veg are now identifiable is out of date more often. AIBU? Preparing to be flamed for this....

I do a proper deep clean once a week also we wipe up any spillages as soon as they happen.

Palegreenstars · 11/08/2017 19:14

Once every 3 months I reckon....

But I'm much better than I used to be at not finding mouldy bits of veg at the back. We're pretty good at using everything these days.

Definitely can't compete with those photos though

MatildaTheCat · 11/08/2017 19:15

Quick wipe with baby wipes once a week and chuck out any lurking nasties. Glad I don't have a huge American style one, though as my parents keep dozens of jars and packets in theirs and it's always filthy looking. [vom]

Mittens1969 · 11/08/2017 19:16

I clean any shelves that need it as and when I see it needs doing. A big clean isn't needed if you stay on top of it.

mummymummums · 11/08/2017 19:17

Those photos are best ever though palegreenstars - I realise should've done before pics

Thinking about it I've cleaned our fridge out once... In 3 years....

steff13 · 11/08/2017 19:18

Our trash is collected Monday morning, so I clean it out every Sunday evening.

BorisTrumpsHair · 11/08/2017 19:22

Full on clean twice a year. Blush

But deal with any spillage, old food etc as I go.

StepAwayFromCake · 11/08/2017 19:24

Crikey you're all so clean!

If a shelf or basket happens to be completely empty, I clean it. Otherwise once a year, when it's virtually empty, the day before we go on holiday.

The outside gets wiped down far more often. Well, the bits that aren't covered by fridge magnets, shopping lists and vouchers. And artwork. And poetry magnets. OK the handle. I clean the handle far more often than the rest of the fridge.

llangennith · 11/08/2017 19:26

Proper clean about every three months when it looks as though it needs it. I only really notice it needs doing if it's nearly empty

thenightsky · 11/08/2017 19:26

When things start sticking to back of it. Blush

implantsandaDyson · 11/08/2017 19:29

Every week, but I tend to run my fridge down to empty before buying more, so it's not a big job, I also don't have a big fridge. I'm a cleaner or "help" if you'd prefer Wink and it's one of the cleaning tasks I do regularly at home as well. There's loads of householdy tasks I'm quite lax on but I'm big on clean fridges.

fourfuckssake4 · 11/08/2017 19:47

When I can be bothered ( so not often Grin nobody's died Grin what the hell is a deep clean Hmm maybe I need a cleaner

RhinestoneCowgirl · 11/08/2017 19:50

Always have the intention of doing it before shopping order arrives, but never seem to. I did it before we left for a week away last week, so we'll come home to a clean fridge. I even zoned all the jars, so now we have a jam shelf and a dedicated chutney area. Simple pleasures...

Papafran · 11/08/2017 19:58

You should patent your idea and find someone to invent it for you. I wonder if you could combine pressure cooker technology with a washing machine to generate the necessary high temperatures. No fear of germs on towels surviving 400 degrees, but perhaps include an irradiation plant to be sure

Thanks barbara. I am glad that you don't think the germs will survive 400. I thought that was definitely hot enough. I judge anyone who washes them at less than 300 though.

Betsy86 · 11/08/2017 20:09

stepaway lmao to the handle comment x

fourfuckssake4 · 11/08/2017 20:16

Rhinestone, Flowers for you, jealous of the jam shelfEnvy will pop round to yours for scone, cream and jam selection Grin

Threads like these just remind me I'm a lazy scank.

I think you should read or watch 'The Help' Martin, your use of the term may make you cringe once you have.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 11/08/2017 20:27

A really good wipe around before the shopping is put in.

Everything out, all racks, door shelf/container things etc taken out and washed etc once a month.

GrumpyOldBag · 11/08/2017 20:32

Oh dear, is this like one of those laundry threads?

About once a year. Maybe. Because I have an actual life.

Oh yeah, nobody's had food poisoning in my house in living memory.

bimbobaggins · 11/08/2017 20:34

Probably once every couple of months but I spent years mopping water from the inside before finding out on good old mn that there's a hole you are meant to clean. Never had to mop up water since

So make sure you are all cleaning the hole

TartanDMs · 11/08/2017 20:40

Usually when I can't get anything else in it - I empty it, chuck loads of stuff then start the cycle again. I can't reach the top of my fridge though because I'm short, so that gets done less frequently. It only has cheese and wine on the top shelf though (cheese in a Tupperware box).

CantChoose · 11/08/2017 21:06

Pretty much never. Like a PP, if a shelf happens to be pretty much empty, or if I'm going on holiday so have cleared it out.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/08/2017 21:38

At the risk of mentioning another fridge related cleaning task that half of people have never done and the other half do every day, where do people stand on Milk Man (or Woman) milk bottles?

At work, we get milk delivered by the milk man and we have a cleaning obsessed office martyr, who cleans up a million times a day, even though it isn't her job and then gets all huffy about how scruffy everyone else is. She will literally wash up and put away the cutlery you got out while your lunch was in the microwave before it bings it you take your eye off it for a nano second.

Anyway, now I've set the scene, every day she brings in the milk even though that isn't her job either and wipes down all the milk bottles before she puts them in the fridge. The first time I saw her do it, I was Shock that anyone would think to do this but at the same time not surprised at all that she did.

So wise Mumsnetters, if your milk arrives courtesy of a lovely Milk Man/Woman in the middle of the night, do you put them straight in the fridge, or wipe them over first, because perhaps they might have got darked on?
